Watched two this weekend:

SiCKO

I have mixed feelings about Michael Moore. On one hand, he's doing journalism that the corrupt, lackey networks have abandoned. On the other hand, I really don't like Moore's constant editorializing during his films. I think his bias taints the factual evidence within. But still, there's enough good stuff here to recommend SiCKO.

The Boxer

Mediocre IRA drama with Daniel Day Lewis and Emily Watson. Good acting, solid production values, weak story. Disappointing.

High Noon (1952) - had never seen this one before, but it was very solid. I'll probably give it another viewing in another month or so. Quite a bit different than the films of today, but it was a nice break.

was it in best of show (or another recent movie by same director), in which one of the characters showed off his my dinner with andre action figures (i want some!)... if you haven't seen the movie, you would have no way of knowing how funny that is... it made me barf out loud...

Corky St. Clair had those action figures for sale in his store during the epilogue of Waiting For Guffman. Hysterically funny. I also liked the Remains of the Day lunch boxes on display.

Wow. I had no expectations and no idea of plot going into this. That was depressing. Solid movie though.

It's a good flick. Certainly gets much darker as it progresses. Worth a rental.I watched Fatal Attraction yesterday. Good suspense flick, but I don't understand this.

Also, watched Batman Begins. I see the new one is coming out, so I thought I ought to catch up. I'm not a comic book movie fan, but they did a good job on this one. Why Katie Holmes though? She's not that cute anymore.

She's horribly miscast in that movie and the romantic subplot with batman revealing his identity to her at the end is just awful in the context of the Dark Knight character.

She should be a lot better. A pretty face can almost always get work in Hollywood, and that isn't good.

Maybe I wasn't in the mood, but I was pretty bored with the movie. A couple chuckles, and I get what the movie was trying to say it just didn't do anything for me.

HBO movie about the 2000 presidential election controversy in Florida. Stirs up some bad memories for me, but overall, pretty good movie. Stars Kevin Spacey, Laura Dern, and Tom Wilkinson.

I'm sure it's been touched on, and even then doesn't really need to be said, but please avoid Good Luck Chuck by all means necessary if you weren't already for whatever reason.

There are probably more pairs (and triples...) of #### in that movie than I've ever seen in any movie (including porn, seriously), plus it's got a lot of Jessica Alba dressed suggestively, which you'd think would earn it at least a few points. But Dane Cook's character's implosion is so excrutiating and vomit-inducing that it cancels out anything good about this. If not for being so hung over that I wouldn't have cared much if my TV caught on fire, I would never have made it through. I'm not even a full-fledged Dane Cook hater, but this was horrible.

Semi-Pro: This should have been a slam dunk . I'm a Ferrell and a 70's fan. How could you screw this up? I'm not sure either, but they figured out a way. Truly terrible. They even had Woody Harelson and still screwed it up. 1.5/5

Ladyhawke... ok- I was designing one of the director's houses at an old firm I worked for, and it came up that he directed Ladyhawke, which I had just seen on TV for the first time in ages. I always loved the movie (don't forget about the weirdly miscast Matthew Broderick!), but had either forgotten or stricken from my brain that Alan Parsons Project soundtrack which is about as misplaced music as has ever seen the inside of a theater. While on a site visit with the client (actually- on his boat, which featured in another of his films), I brought up having just seen the movie, always liking it, and then said something along the lines of "... and that soundtrack- whoa. It's pretty... ". He responded/interupted with something like "I know- isn't it great?!" before I could expand on how god-awful it was. Fortunately, he cut in early enough where I could switch gears and follow up with a "yeah- pretty amazing(ly bad)". Turns out, he met his wife on the movie, and IIRC, maybe even over figuring out the music. Very, very cool and decent guy (other than the obvious questionable taste in music).

This movie definitely gets bette the more times you watch it. I felt exactly the same way the first time I watched it. I enjoyed it much more the 2nd and 4rd time I watched it.

I, however, didn't. Watched this tonight. While I have seen worse movies this movie was pretty damn bad. Feel sorry for the people that spent money to watch this.

Wife wanted to watch Fool's Gold last night, so I watched it with her. It wasn't bad. A little light on 'action' for me, but I wasn't expecting a lot to begin with. I enjoyed the treasure hunting storyline, and I also enjoyed Kate Hudson. I did laugh out loud a couple of times as well. I'd give it a 2.5/5.

Atonement

Meh. I sat through about 40 minutes before I'd had enough. This is a well-made movie with all the marks of quality craftsmenship. But it starts out extremely slow, and by the time I realized this was going to be a movie where an innocent guy gets crucified for something he didn't do, that was all I needed to see.

Last night I watched Grindhouse: Death Proof

QT is really hit or miss for me. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are two of my favorite movies ever. I also liked Jackie Brown pretty well. But Kill Bill movies just didn't do it for me, same with Sin City. So, I wasn't sure what to expect on this one. That being said, I really, really enjoyed this movie. I liked the feel, the dialogue, the cinematography, the score, I mean, I just really liked all of it. It's so much different than everything else that comes out, and it just worked for me. All the leads except Stuntman Mike were female, which is way out of the norm, and all of them were no-names, small names...I mean Rosario Dawson is the one big name, and Rose McGowan in a bit part is a medium name, but Zoe Bell? Tracie Thomas? And the thing is, they were all pretty damn good, they all seemed like good friends that went way back, messing with each other, talking about the same kind of stuff me and my friends talk about. I don't know, I think it's definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it yet. I doubt this one is for everyone, so don't shoot the messenger if you don't like it, but I have to say this was one of the best movies I've seen in the past year or so. Rank it 4.5/5

Death Proof seems to be one of those like-it-or-hate-it movies. I liked it.

Control: Share the disappointment of the couple other people who commented on this one. I love Joy Division, but this needed either to concentrate more on the music or concentrate more on explaining the guy's life. I didn't feel that the characters and their motives and backgrounds were well-developed at all, and I was left wanting more of that or, in the alternative, for this to be more of a concert-type film. The lead actor did do a phenomenal job, and Samantha Morton is always great. Go listen to some Joy Division instead. 2/5

Willow Tree: A 2005 film from my favorite Iranian director. It's the only one of his I hadn't seen, and I was extremely excited about it. It's about a blind man who is able to regain his sight through a surgery. There are some stunning scenes, and the story is in many ways very heartbreaking. But somehow I wasn't as moved by this one as I expected, or as much as prior films (see Children of Heaven or The Color of Paradise instead). Still worth seeing, and a solid 4/5.

Received 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days in the mail yesterday and haven't been so excited to see something since...well, Willow Tree. Hope to report on this one tomorrow.

Finally saw "Superbad", and I felt it was pretty darn bad. If this is what they are considering comedies now, I think I have seen my last comedy. IMO, it was waaaay overrated. I mean, I laughed a couple times, but was very "meh" about the rest. I have heard people say this was their favorite comedy of all time. I can only imagine those people are under the age of 20. If crude language is all it takes to make someone laugh anymore, this is the movie for you. IMO, a comedy needs more than just crude language.

This movie definitely gets bette the more times you watch it. I felt exactly the same way the first time I watched it. I enjoyed it much more the 2nd and 4rd time I watched it.

I try not to make it a habit of re-watching movies I did not like. Or for a 3rd or 4th time for that matter.

Meh. I sat through about 40 minutes before I'd had enough. This is a well-made movie with all the marks of quality craftsmenship. Yeah, I watched it just to disregard your authority I just forgot to remove it. I am lazy and sleep-deprived.

There is some merit to at least getting the sense of the movie for converstation's sake, though

Oy. That's going to be a challenge. I haven't seen it yet but it looks fantastic.Have you seen The Magdalene Sisters? That's anoter movie with tough subject matter that I liked a lot.
