Finally got around to watching So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Was pleasantly surprised. I had dismissed this movie in HS because I thought the trailers looked stupid. Forgot all about the movie until reading through the underrated comedy movie thread. Laughed quite a few times, especially at the character's father. Would recommend this to anybody that hasn't seen it (although I might be the last person who hadn't).
Head. Move. Now.One of my favorite under-rated comedies (and was pretty heavily mentioned in that "underrated movies" thread) and has Myer at his best (playing his dad)/worst (why must he parade around in his underwear?). One of my oldest friends is in it too (Poetry MC). So many great cameos (Phil Hartman, Stephen Wright).

This and Manhunter are my favorite videos to recommend for those looking for something (old)new.
That was a really funny scene. I liked this movie for the most part as well.

I finally got around to seeing "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". What an incredibly boring piece of crap. I can't believe this movie got a 7.7 on IMDB. I would only recommend this movie to those who are having sleeping issues.

I also watched "American Gangster" recently. This was a much better movie than The Assassination of Jesse James. I wonder how much of it was really true and how much was added for dramatic effect.

I like this movie, but I'll admit that it's very slow.

I know it's only in theaters right now but Body of Lies is very good. If you like Man on Fire you'll like this.

The reviews of this movie make me hate critics in retrospect. Nothing everything has to be profound and top anything that has been done before.

This was a very entertaining movie with good performances. If a critic cannot enjoy this then I wonder why they picked the profession.

Leo was real good.

The movie looks good, and I will definitely see it. Critics are dumb sometimes. Many movies are not 100% original, so I don't see that as a negative.

Reading some of the reviews here, I can see why people didn't like the ending. It was kind of silly, after all. But I like this movie overall.

No, this isn't a Mamet classic. And yes, there are flaws. But when I see a movie like Redbelt, I have to compare it to other movies I've seen recently. And when you consider all the drek that is out there, almost any Mamet movie is far superior.

Certainly a flawed movie. But I like the idealism.
I watched this a couple nights ago and enjoyed itAnd I know basically everyone didnt like the ending, but why?!?!

Would it have been better if he just walked out???

Maybe if they really restructured it it coulda been better, or if they extended it 5-10 minutes, but I didnt have a problem really with the ending

Not a great movie, not a great ending

3.4/5

I absolutely loved "Assassination of JJ by TCRF"If a good movie needs to be exciting or action packed throughout to you, I feel bad for you.Everything about it was great. The acting, storyline, cinematography, lighting, mood, etc. It had every element of a movie you could ask for. It has a lot of subtleties that to your average watcher might not click, but I thought everything in this movie was fantastic.Maybe you expected a shoot 'em up western, but this is a psychological western that, IMO, is a masterpiece. Pitt, in 1 of his best performances, got robbed of an Oscar nod. Throughout the movie, he was almost at the same time, your best friend, and your most menacing enemy. Most actors couldnt pull off what he did in this movieI feel bad for you that you didnt enjoy it, because its a great piece of filmmaking

Snow Angels-I enjoyed this rather dark indie film

Pan's Labyrinth-I really wanted more from this movie. It could have been great.

The Strangers-Watched this last night. Loosely based on the infamous "Keddie" murders of 1981. This movie started out brilliantly, and faded down the stretch.

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("For me, it was just waaaayyyy too much with:

1. Having a fight out of the ring (nobody would bother to stop?), and by winning that:

2. The Japanese figher give him the belt, and

3. The master give him the red belt.

For me it felt like it was too much and came off as cheesy. I thought the movie was great until he got to the tournament, but then the ending just left a terrible taste in my mouth and I couldn't get past it to give a great rating or recommend it to many other people.

I guess it was a little cheesy. I think the master part at the end makes sense though.I think they best way the couldve done it was have Ejiofer go back into the ring for his fight, make it so he had the handicap, win, then say what he was going to say anyway

I don't see how security would have let him up on that stage at the end.

The Strangers wasn't horrible. Some good tension and a couple of jolts (with good surround) Can't say I'd actually recommend it but I wouldn't say not to watch it.

:lmao: There is a big difference between "movies" and "films". To me the definition would be that films are made with a focus on art, movies focus on entertaining the masses. It is easy to have different opinions on movies, but well made films are easy to appreciate regardless of their subject matter. While watching Assissination I got the feeling that this came closer to portraying the James gang than any other previous attempt. Casey Affleck was perfect in this film and deserved Best Supporting Actor over Bardem, at least he was recognized with a nomination. Like Yinzer said, everything about it is great. This will have a place in my All Time Top 10 for some time to come.

Mongol: A movie about Genghis Khan's rise to power that was recommended to me by another FBG. Great movie. The story flowed easily with the exception of long gaps in time. ie. He talks with another Khan about going to war and he says in a year. Next scene is the war. Other than that it was great. The battle scenes were very well done. I usually don't like subtitles but didn't have a problem with this one. 4/5

War, Inc: I really don't know what to think of this movie. It is a satire about big business fighting wars for countries. A big american corporation is sent to a middle eastern country to get their oil supplies and John Cusack is the frontman/assassin. . The movie doesn't take itself very seriously and has a few pretty good laughs but I'm not sure if that is what they were going for. ???/5

Two more entries from the Chicago International Film Festival:

A Christmas Tale: From the same director/screenwriter of one of my favorite movies, Kings and Queen, with many of the same cast. It's really quite a similar movie--a very unsentimental look at a highly dysfunctional family. Spectacularly acted, extremely engaging, just perfect. Even my boyfriend, who hates what he calls "movies with French people talking a lot", rated this one 5/5. The best we've seen at the Festival thus far. 5/5.

Timecrimes: Extremely low-budget, time-travel/suspense movie from Spain. A bit tedious, and all plot developments save one twist at the end could be seen from miles away. Still, for what it was, not bad. 3/5

Also, watched on video, The Visitor: Agree with whoever reviewed this previously. It's a great film. As I watched it reminded me of The Station Agent--no wonder, it's the same director. Interesting characters, great story, and top-notch acting, especially from the lead actor, who gave one of the best performances I've seen in years. Sweet and touching. 4.5/5

I enjoyed Mongol as well, I'd probably go 3.5/5. They are continuing the storyline as well with another 2 films planned for the trilogy. I haven't seen many Mongolian flims, but this was was filmed very beautifully and flowed pretty smoothly I thought outside of the gaps in time. One thing I thought was a bit of a stretch was that he was so loyal to his wife when in reality I once remember reading that like 1/6 of Asia is a decendent of Khan because of how much he got around. Reminded me of a less brutal version of Braveheart. The actor that played Kahn was very, very good in the role.

10 Items or Less

Light film. Short film (clocks in around 71 mins despite the Netflix sleeve claiming 98 mins). Morgan Freeman plays a caricature of himself (at least I think it's a caricature  ) while studying grocery store workers for an upcoming role and helps a smart and strong-willed checkout girl get out of a rut in the process. I've never heard of the actress playing the lead, but she was great and I hope she gets more work in other films. The scenes in the grocery store and Target were superb.

I completely agree with about his wife. I was also shocked at how he eagerly accepted her kids as his own when it was pretty clear he wasn't the father.

This is one movie where the trailer really blew it. The trailer loooks awful, and yet, you and a lot of other smarty FBGs recommended it. I will definitely see it based on all the positive reviews here. But MAN is that trailer ###.

Dear Frankie

Stars Gerard Butler (300) and Emily Mortimer (Lars and the Real Girl, 30 Rock, Match Point).

It's about a deaf boy in Scotland that longs to see his father. I can't say enough good things about this movie. Excellent acting, clever story, and some really genuine emotions explored. I loved it. This movie would have been awful in the hands of a hack Hollywood director, but it's handled very well. I can't say enough good things about Dear Frankie.
Saw this over the weekend, and coming in not being familiar with it I was pleasantly surprised. Nice film to watch with the wife.

Also saw In Bruges, very different in a good way. If you liked 'Snatch' or are into hitman style movies you will like this one.
Cool. Dear Frankie is a good one.The In Bruges trailer looks terrible, but so many people like the movie, I obviously need to see it.
Seriously one of the best movies I can think of in the last few years. Rent it.

Watched "The Lives of Others". :coffee:

Excelent movie very good story and acting, even some funny moments. The only thing I didnt liked were the last few minutes.

Just saw, "Ripple Effect"...and I'm not sure what to think. I'll admit that I was a bit distracted while watching it so that could be the reason that I'm a bit confused.

For anyone who has seen it...did they ever explain the relationship of the main character and the billionaire? Why didn't he want to have a pizza and beer with him? The movie ended and I was left with that gaping hole and couldn't resolve it...so I'm undecided on this one.

Awesome movie1 of the few foreign films Ive ever watched that are so good, you dont realize youre reading subtitles while watching. The only other ones that I think fit that criteria are "City of God" and "Maria Full of Grace"I forget how it ended exactly, but I think I liked it

If you havent seen City of God, thats a must rent, hell, a must ownProbably in my Top 20 movies of all time, and how it goes full circle by the end is just brilliant and couldnt of been done any better

Eastern Promises

David Cronenberg's melodrama about the Russian mob starring Viggo Mortenson and Naomi Watts. I liked it. Aside from the interesting tattoos and their relevance to the Russian mob, there isn't a lot of original ideas here. Still, I liked the movie and recommend it.

Another awesome movie. Viggo is beyond bad-### in this movieIve heard people who speak Russian say that his accent was the best theyve ever heard for someone who doesnt speak Russian. He def deserved his Oscar nomination

That's cool. I was just thinking that his accent was pretty decent.

Son of Rambow

Decent British coming of age independent movie. Takes place in the 80s and it is about two kids who watch First Blood and then try to recreate a sequel on their own. It dragged on for a little towards the middle but the ending was more emotional then I expected. I was entertained.

3.5/5

The Incredible Hulk: Probably my man-crush on Norton coming through, but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Personally, I liked this movie quite a bit more than Ironman. Both has FX that drove me nuts, but this one had a better story line/acting so it kept me going. For the superhero movies to work for me, I have to "connect" with the person/feel their plight. That's why Hulk, Batman, X-men, and Spidey work for me and Ironman, Fantastic Four, and Superman don't - just don't care about any of the characters in the last series I listed.
Agreed, I liked this movie way more than I thought I would and am looking forward to where they go with it and if/when they tie Hulk in with the other Marvel comics (Avengers). My only problem with this one was:

Been battling my internet connection lately so haven't posted recently. Just got done watching in the last week:

Indiana Jones 4: Thought this movie was terrible. Stupid plot, horrible ending, bad F/X, and that Labouf (sp?) kid is going to be in a lot of action movies now and he really annoys me for some reason. I ALMOST hated this as much as I did The Happening.
Agreed, Indy was violently raped by Spielberg and Lucus. And, The Happening was still worse.

Fracture: I'm really not a Hopkins fan. The guy plays pretty much the same role in every single movie. This movie really didn't do anything for me. It had a couple decent twists but I was sitting there waiting for them to happen so it took some of the surprise out of it. Not a bad movie but nothing that I would recommend to someone. Ryan Gosling was very good. 2/5

3:10 to Yuma: I've had this forever and finally got around to watching it. A good movie all around. Christian Bale is slowly becoming my favorite actor. The last few movies I've seen him in he has been great (Batman, Harsh Times and this) and can't wait to see him as the Terminator! One thing I didn't like about this movie was the ending. 4/5

Maybe you just misspoke, but I'm pretty sure Bale is playing John Connor in the new Terminator movies.

Just checking. Although I think Bale would make one bad ### terminator too!

Well, they are making a trilogy, and I would be willing to bet at that some point in that trilogy we will see an endoskeleton with Bale's skin covering it, it would bring the Terminator saga full circle.Connor becomes what was designed to terminate him.

Didn't see this one covered yet, another movie I hadn't heard of but also enjoyed. About a diamond heist by a janitor and a company executive. Michael Caine is entertaining as always, and usually Demi Moore annoys me but I thought she was good in this one. A little cheesy at some parts and nothing that hasn't been done before, but overall it was very entertaining and I would recommend. 3.5/5
