Watched "Priceless" this weekend. Starred Audrey Tautou. I see what Pickles likes about her - she's extremely sexy in an exotic way. Deep, dark eyes....Anyways - the movie was pretty entertaining, it went in a direction I didn't expect, even moreso from a foreign movie. Some beautiful locales, and some really funny scenes. Big thumbs up on this. 4/5.

Now I need to watch A Very Long Engagement.

Maybe I'll even rewatch the crappy DaVinci Code just to see her again. On second thought, Nah...I'll go get Amelie.
see Dirty Pretty Things (I think thats what its called). Chiwetel Ejiofer is in it too if thats not whats it called so that should narrow it down. She works in this hotel where this Dr. takes peoples organs for $$$ on the black market....That might sound not good, but its very excellent
good call.
I liked this movie, too.The Wind That Shakes the Barley: Don't remember if anyone else has reviewed this one on here. I thought it was a fascinating portrayal of 1920s Ireland as civil war began. I didn't know a lot of the history of this time in Ireland, and seeing how it evolved that Irish were fighting Irish was very interesting. The performances were also terrific, and the film was beautifully shot. A must-see for anyone interested in Ireland or Irish history, and a very good movie for anyone else. 4/5

I like that movie a lot and posted this review months ago. Looking back at what I wrote, the movie has grown on me and improved in my mind since I wrote that review. Cillian Murphy seems to be good in every starring role and I think it's safe to say that he's one of the top actors of that generation.

I agree with you about Cillian Murphy--he really is stunning in this role and has been good at everything in which I've seen him. I think this movie might grow on me, too. Wish I had not watched it on a computer on a plane as I think I might have liked it even better under more favorable movie-watching circumstances.

City of Ember: Sci-fi movie based on a book (anyone know what it was?) about a colony of people sent to live underground for 200 years to ensure the continuation of mankind... they never say from what but I'd assume Nuclear war or something. The movie was good but I think it was directed at a younger audience. No real drama outside of the whole our city is dieing bit. Bill Murray had a small role but was good as usual (I'm a fan). 3/5

You talked about the historical aspect of the movie. And I have to guess that this story was very well researched. Many scenes seemed very accurate. Particularly, the scenes in the town council meetings. Good stuff.

the wife and i have this in our netflix queue. it's been there for months, in fact. it had some superb reviews and i'm keen to see it.

Southland Tales.

:goodposting:

Okay...I understand that the movie sucked. Someone please explain it to me. Did the world end (because pimps don't commit suicide)? What the hell happened to The Rock? What's with the stigmata?

City of Men: As I was watching, I kept thinking "This is not as good as City of God. This is not as good as City of God." And I guess it wasn't, but as I've thought about it the past few days it has struck me just how good this movie really was. Performances were amazing, as always, and I love the complex relationship between to the two lead characters. Very well done, though not as good as City of God. 4/5
After just watching this, I'd probably have to agree with this. City of God set an impossibly high standard to live up to, but City of Men is still really good on it's own. Anyone know how different/similar it is from the tv series of the same name?

Rock n Rolla - 9/10 - if you like movies like Snatch, or Layer Cake, then you should like this. Pretty fast paced, and some good action.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley - 5/10 - I think the underlying story was decent, but they could have done a better job on this imo. Camera work was pretty crappy too. Probably one of the worst gun fighting scenes I have seen in a while. Every camera angle during the gun fight showed people shooting, but none of the angles were from behind the guy shooting. Having a camera behind the guy gives you some idea what they are actually shooting at. Might not seem like a big deal to most people, but it annoyed me. It seemed to drag at points as well. If there was more money spent on this film it could have been better. jmho

I'd recommend this to Guy Ritchie fans.

I can't argue with that. Except the movie shows me a lot of things I hadn't seen before - so that is a big plus for me. While I concur that a more skilled director would have made a slicker movie, Barley had enough good things in it for me to recommend it.

Almost Famous -- Finally forced myself to watch the entire thing last night, because I was sick and nothing else was on. Had never been able to make it through the whole thing before. Was definitely an above average movie with some great quotes. Parts of the movie started to drag at times, but then things always picked up right before I was about to hit the FF button. The airplane scene towards the end was absolutely hillarious, and my favorite part of the movie. 3/5 stars.

Gacy -- This movie is about John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer. I thought the lead actor playing Gacy did a great job - he basically made the movie. I'm not sure how historically accurate it is, but there was definitely some suspense throughout the film. Overall it was a very disturbing movie. Much better than other serial killer movies like The Green River Killer, etc. 2.5/5 stars.

300

This is a goofy movie. But I enjoyed it.
I like 300. And this after confirming just last night with my wife that I am indeed still heterosexual. :goodposting:
Yeah, it's the gayest movie ever. And of course, I need to post this review every time 300 is mentioned.
Oh my dear lord that was hysterical. I was desperately trying and failing miserably to stifle laughing out loud, my employees probably think that I was having a stroke.Thank you for that.

Absolutely. I re-read it every few months and it continues to crack me up.

Just watched Hitman. Fan of Timothy Olyphant...Great Popcorn flick
Plus Olga Kurylenko nakey multiple times
DOn't know who she is but definitely :pickle:
I saw this last night, mostly because it was free and I am a fan of Olyphant, because of Deadwood. I don't expect much from action movies and I wanted to enjoy this one but the story telling simply lacked continuity and felt particularly disjointed. The director seemed to forgo using any form of plot devices to advance the story and things just sort of randomly moved from one scene to the next (e.g. the Mexican standoff in the train made absolutely no sense). Even the fight sequences didn't make sense. I hold the director and editors completely responsible for these failures. The bizarre part for me is that of all the elements of this movie, the one that you would least expect care about or work was the surprising on screen chemistry between Olypant and Kurylenko. That the compulsory Hollywood romantic angle was the most plausible and entertaining aspect of the movie is probably not the most ringing endorsement.1.5/5

You people need to Google Neill Cumpston. He's written some of the funniest film reviews ever. I can't post them here because there's a lot of cussing, but you will thank me later if you Google him.

My main issue with this movie was that they should have made the font coloring on the Subtitles darker. At times I found it hard to read in the daylight scenes because the font was too light. Outside of that, i loved it. Very good movie.

Don't you mean it's the most overhyped movie you've watched in years? I am guessing you've seen far worse movies recently.I thought it was good. Slow, but good.

I can see why you'd think that movie is very boring. But I usually give a movie like this credit for trying to make something other than a pedestrian genre movie.

Planet Earth

Finally started watching this series this week. Wow. I am blown away. This is a must-see for nature documentary lovers and anyone with a Bluray player.

Yes! :X I had this a few months ago but upgraded to Blu-ray recently. It was on sale at Amazon UK for around $37 and it's region free.

It arrived on Monday and I have watched nine of the 11 episodes. Easy to run out of superlatives when talking about this.

Blue Planet: Seas of Life is almost as good, but not on Blu-ray as yet.

Loved it. In the middle of "Life of Mammals" right now. A 10 part BBC series narrated by David Attenborough. Not sure if it is on blu-ray but it would definitely be worth it if you liked the planet earth.

I think its a movie you either cant finish or really like. I loved it, but I recommended it to a friend who thought it sucked.I understand people finding it boring or slow, but I still cant equate that with bad.

Saw Across The Universe.

Liked it.

Only complaint was that it was a little long.

I'm not sure if it would be liked by all ages but for an old guy like me, I really enjoyed it.

Brokeback Mountain: OK, so I'm three years late on this, but somehow this one just got by me. Finally watched it in hopes of generating some anger over its upset Oscar loss to Crash. But...meh. Definitely a beautiful movie--loved the scenery. And Heath Ledger was phenomenal, just really committed to that part and almost unrecognizable. Found the movie overall a bit boring, though, and the story not particularly believable. Also, my biggest issue was that I felt like Jake Gyllenhaal had accidentally wandered in from the City Slickers set. He was just not at all believable as a cowboy--couldn't get past the notion that he seemed like a somewhat effete, New York intellectual. 3/5

I would agree with both those points. It has Ang Lee's "sensitive" fingerprints all over it.ETA: I also thought they gave very short shrift to their wives and families. it could have been a deeper film with some more time to these other characters.

Ted Bundy - This movie is pretty bad. It revolves around Bundy's antics as a serial killer. The actor who plays Bundy isn't good. The scenes where Bundy hits/slaps girls and knocks them unconcious are laughable - it's like the dude has more knockout power than George Foreman. There's one scene where Bundy backhand slaps a girl in his car, and she is knocked out. I LOLed during that part. No real drama. 1.5/5 stars.

The Hitman - I think this movie is based on the video game? If not, it was sure made like it was. The movie is basically a real life reenactment of a video game. The main character is the world's most dangerous hitman. It could of actually been an entertaining movie if it was well made, but there's zero character development, and it's basically non-stop killing with no drama whatsoever. 1/5 stars.

Ledger was very good. Gyllenhaal was totally miscast. Ledger aged on-screen convincingly. Gyllenhaal looked like a 17 year old boy put on a fake mustache. Awful. I think Crash and Brokeback are very flawed movies.I like Ang Lee. But Lee's The Ice Storm is 10 times better than Brokeback. Even Crouching Tiger is a far better film for me than Brokeback.

The Ice Storm was great, and definitely much better than Brokeback Mountain....I liked Ride With The Devil a lot too...Jeffrey Wright is one of the most underrated actors out there.I dont get all the love for Brokeback either....Switch Jake G's character for Maggie G, and it get nothing close to the buzz/acclaim it got because theres no gay guys. It would be regarded as an average movie that is shot beautifully and with a very good performance from Ledger, but not much else.

:coffee: at the City Slickers reference

I like Ang Lee well enough too. He makes thoughtful but somewhat soulless movies. "Crouching Tiger" might be his most entertaining film but featuring chow and yeoh will always help. i haven't seen "lust, caution" yet. good, light films from him are the early ones like "eat drink man woman" and "sense & sensibility". of that generation of asian filmmakers, i like wong kar-wai and wayne wang (although he's moved away to more conventional films; i love "chinese box"). kar-wai is a delight.

Hostel II

I've been ripping Hostel on these boards for a long time. Hostel II was on HBO, so I figured I'd check it out for the heck of it. Some thoughts:

• I've had it with torture on film. If you are going to show such horrific material, your movie better be more than this junky, slapped-together tripe.

• I did like certain plot twists.

• The director must have snorted a huge line of coke before he wrote the ending. Because the entire movie is heavy-handed, gorey, and twisted. But wait! The ending is funny! What the ####?

• I'd call the torture misogynistic, but a guy gets brutalized by a woman later in the film.

Overall, my opinion of these movies hasn't changes. This is complete, utter garbage. The director of the Hostel franchise probably has some talent. But these kinds of "films" add absolutely nothing to society.

I liked Ride With The Devil a lot too...Jeffrey Wright is one of the most underrated actors out there.
VERY underrated movie.
I never understood why it seemed to be so overlooked when it was released in theaters and video.Jeffrey Wright steals the show IMO, but the cast is great. Tobey Maguire, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Simon Baker, Jim Caviezel, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo. Skeet Ulrich and Jewel are even pretty good.Typical great cinematography and direction by Ang Lee.Great movie

Made it about halfway through "Get Smart" before stopping it.

I don't think they even got the concept of the original show.
