I really expected to see a full sweep of Dune for reboot.

Personally, I struggle with how to rank it. I would agree that it is probably about as good as a movie could get from that source material, but part of my problem is that I read the book for the first time around the same time the movie came out and thought the book was much better than I was expecting, and the weird ideas and characters I liked won't translate well on the big screen. I also don't like how each of the movies end, and ding them a little for that, but that is a me thing as well.

It doesn't hold a candle to the 21 Jump Street reboot.

Some fanboy I am, I thought Ari Aster's new movie came out next week, but it is this week so I am pivoting to him for a theme. I wanted to rewatch all three of his before seeing the new one, and there was a new movie or two in his recommended movies on that one channel I won't name.

critics ****ing hated this thing with a 22% on RT/30 on metacritic but myself and my fellow peons liked it as it had scores across 7's on imdb and RT, a little lower but still positive 6.5 on metacritic. I thought it was pretty charming and endearing. The director also made the excellent Sound of Freedom that critcs also mostly disliked but us normies did.

agreed. interesting spin on a tried and true plot line, but it took to long to get there. 20-30 minutes less would have improved it quite a bit.

In my head the opening of Midsommar is so much longer than it actually is because of the content . I think we are in Sweden within 15-20 minutes for the remaining 2hours of this fun romp.

I've seen Hereditary enough that I know my stance on that one, but Beau is Afraid was the main rewatch I needed to get to since I only watched that once and was a bit confused. I have my tickets for Friday night for Eddington.

This was my take as well. That opening part is so chaotic and stressful, but in a way I could understand. Somebody with extreme anxiety, and this is the type of catastrophizing that would go through his mind as he did daily tasks. Then it descends into more and more weirdness. Are all the scenarios similar of his internal fears coming to life, or is there something more going on? I also don't remember the end very well (the reason for a rewatch), but I just remember having the feeling that it was an inside joke that I wasn't getting. In the last year I've been randomly listening to interviews with directors I would consider favorites, and Aster has some good content on that one channel. He is one of my favorite newer people in the industry to listen to talk about movies along with Bill Hader. Both super smart guys with some fun movie tastes and suggestions. Both with odd senses of humor as well. What I am getting at is I am wondering if I will get anything else from the rewatch with different expectations and knowing more about Aster and what he is trying to do with his movies.

Hereditary is great, and one I got more and more from on rewatches. There is a lot going on in the background I didn't catch the first time.

I just watched Nobody (Prime). 2021, IMDB 7.4. I'm not giving anything away that the movie poster doesn't by saying it's Bob Odenkirk doing an Accountant/Wick/Reacher/History of Violence. THIS guy's got a past, the Russian mob messed with the wrong normal-seeming guy! Anyway, it was pretty fun - there were some funny parts, the action scenes were kind of Daredevilly in that he took a beating, and overall it was definitely worth watching if you like this kind of movie. 7.4 is a bit much for me, though.

Best line: "You brought a lot of shotguns." "You brought a lot of Russians."

While normies who whine incessantly on message boards about critics' ratings busy themselves with the latest <30% Rotten Tomatoes movies, I watched 2 docs on NFLX last night.

"Pray Away" about the failures and dangers of the gay conversion movement that swept the early aughts and helped pass ballot measures in states to prevent gay marriage. Eye opening how much betrayal went on - gay people with power and panache turning on their own kind to curry favor and enrich themselves. All while gay people died around them, whether it was disease or suicide. What a horrendous black mark on our country and shame on all the gay people who not only went along with it, but knew what they were doing was wrong because the limelight was so lucrative. I exited the doc angry at so many people and institutions but also relieved that we as a society finally saw the light and recognized this as bogus psychiatry, discrediting the profit seekers like husks of corn. May we never return here. Exodus can Fffff all the way off.

Athlete A: oh my god, how? Shut gymnastics down now. My god. Monsters, the lot of them. I had to turn it off before nightmares destroyed my slumber but I'll finish it tonight. With a blankie. Absolutely vile, horrendous and it wasn't just Nassar. The whole complex was a revolting group of evil predators and ghouls who profited off the backs of little girls. USA Gymnastics is as bad as the Catholic Church and Penn State Football.

Huh...i just watched this one too. Yeah, what tick said.

Also watched a show called Who is Erin Carter...kinda similar. Both get beat to **** consistently- and shot- but are good to go consistently, thanks. Also epi pens. But i generally enjoyed it.

Yeah I think you are right about embodying anxiety. Was too weird for me though.

This had me very worried from seeing the trailers and knowing what Ari Aster is capable of. I doubt this is going to be for me.

I THINK you will like this one more than you expect, but I am not going to stick my neck out too far with a recommendation for people not fully on board with Aster. I will say that the small crowd in the theater was laughing a lot, and I laughed out loud multiple times. In that sense I think it's his most accessible movie yet, but also with the topic(s) at hand (and there are dozens of things he is turning his dark sense of humor on) I think it also will either rub people the wrong way if they think he is making fun of them or maybe it will be "too soon" for a movie largely about the state of our country and how we interacted with each other in 2020. As with Beau though, I felt like I was missing something at the end but maybe a rewatch will help clear things up. There are a couple of story lines that I didn't quite "get", but I am also not in tuned to online culture and I was left wondering if there was something I missed due to that. Nowhere near as difficult of a watch as his last 3 could get at times, and I had a lot of fun with this one.

I also saw a poster for Weapons from the director of Barbarian so I will be back in the theater (hopefully the right one this time) again in a couple weeks.
