Rami Malek, he’s an actor I just don’t get the appeal of. He’s odd, I’ll give him that but I don’t think he’s a good actor or able to use that weirdness to good effect.
I think he has his moments but The Amateur didn't work for me. Loved him in the Pacific. I think his wheelhouse is the odd, evil villain.

I didn't care for his creepy, haunted villain in No Time to Die but that was more of an issue with the script than the actor. I prefer my Bond villains to be eccentric, monolouging megalomaniacs.

He was pretty good in The Amateur in showing the internal anguish of his character without going too over the top. He was head and shoulders above John Savage from the original.

ONE-EYED JACKS FFF Full Free Films
I had only seen this once before and it is one of those movies that grow on you with another viewing.
Marlon Brando starred in and directed his ONLY film after Kubrick got fired. Brando made a visually stunning movie, the final one shot in Vista Vision. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg helped to restore it. The film is absolutely GORGEOUS. It is shot with full knowledge of photography concepts of framing, light, depth of focus. Vista Vision makes everything crystal clear and colors pop, especially side frames
The landscapes, the dessert, the coast, Brando waited hours till he got the right waves in the background. It's been described by many as a masterpiece worth a watch just for the visuals.
The cast includes three Oscar winners: Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Ben Johnson, and one Oscar nominee: Katy Jurado, I love her. Ben Johnson is another fav and is incredible in this movie. Josefina Yolanda "Pina" Pellicer López de Llergo. I heard she had an affair with Brando
who treated her cruelly and left her heartbroken. She tragically ended her life over the affair. The Mexican people never forgave Brando. (I did hear this and I 'think' the true story didn't come out at that time and that Brando was blaimed.)
Wait a sec, just found out that the last part about Brando and the 'affair' was incorrect.

Brando did treat her badly during the shoot but here is the true story of her demise.
Pina Pellicer was a Mexican actress who took her own life at the young age of thirty

Generally agree but he's perfect for Mr Robot.
Amazing Freddy too.

He was a solid Freddie Mercury

Really? I thought he was terrible. I didn’t feel like I was watching Freddy Mercury. I felt like I was watching an actor playing Freddy Mercury. Contrast that with Austin Butler in whatever that weird Elvis movie was called. That was a good performance

Forgot where I saw it but someone said he always looks like he’s quietly eating potato chips

Better Man (2024) is a musical biopic of British Gen X pop star Robbie Williams. It's a familiar tale about the perils of fame but the gimmick is he's is portrayed by a CGI monkey. It surprisingly works, not only making it possible for 50 year old Williams to play his younger self but also making his character seem more sympathetic as the monkey does massive amounts of drugs and acts like a ####. I liked the elaborate musical numbers and the depiction of Britpop era England. The ending got kind of schmaltzy but that's pretty standard for the genre.

Watched Night Always Comes, Netflix movie yesterday

Tough, tough subject matter, but very good performances by most all of the cast

Not a sunny day vibe. Be warned

Have less than zero interest in seeing this. Don't think the advertising helped it at all.

I remember being baked and seeing the commercial and telling the wife we had to go see Music Monkey

Then I saw it was a Robbie Williams bio with a talking monkey playing him and lost all interest

Couldn't sleep last night. Rewatched the 1978 movie The Deer Hunter. Its a slow grind and not for everyone. I absolutely love that movie. Really hits me. Just a wonderful journey of characters and circumstances. Great cast.

I hope @KarmaPolice is still interested in a 70s movie countdown because The Deer Hunter is a movie that still leaves me jaw on the floor.

Yeah, tim killed our mojo a bit for the 70s one. Maybe next year? Or we skip to 10s-60s?

First hour is kinda boring but necessary. I remember really liking the remaining 2/3 a lot though

Meryl Streep was stunning in that film ♥️

Since nobody liked my monkey movie yesterday, could I interest you in a penguin? The Penguin Lessons (2024) on Netflix is a lovable little movie about an English teacher and his bird after the 1976 coup in Argentina. It's ostensibly a comedy although the characters lead lives full of sadness and regret. Steve Coogan gives a fine performance as the teacher and the penguin is very cute.

Finally had an opportunity to watch Super... dark comedies are some of my favorites and this one did not disappoint.

Gunn's humor was evolving here and shifting from some of his previous mainstream scripts. Rainn Wilson was great, antagonistic Bacon is always fun and Page did alright... but I've never really cared for she/he.

Finished up The Survivalist (2021) last night. I have 3 words...don't, just don't. I thought it might have a chance with stars Johnathan Rhys Meyers and John Malkovich but alas it was a low budget, non-thriller that went nowhere with a lot of comical gun fights. Comical because even though the main character is presented as a survivalist/prepper and has weapons of various calibers stashed all over the property he resides on, regardless of which gun is shooting, they all sound like that cheap, fake cap gun bang when fired. About a half hour in I almost bailed but I decided to see just how stupid it got and was not disappointed.

Runaway Train

I mean...This was awful. Solid concept but all the characters are cartoonish, the dialog was bad, and the acting was worse.
:yucky:

The me I was 35 years ago really liked it

I've always heard it was some sort of lost 80's classic. I may have enjoyed it more back then.
Ebert rated it 4/4 stars

it's one I've always wanted to see. Kind of interesting the story was by Akira Kurosawa and both Voight and Roberts got Oscar nominations. None of that is what I would have expected from a movie that sounds like an 80s version of Speed.

Infinitely better than Speed imo

You should watch it

Free on Tubi, Pluto

Infinitely better? I think Speed is awesome too so my expectations are pretty high. Though Andy has helped tamper them a bit.

Take my review with a grain of salt. I watched it at 2:00 AM with a mild bout of insomnia.

I like Speed. When flipping through titles on Tubi (where I watched Runaway Train) I was surprised to see that it was inspired by another film Bullet Train (1975).

I think Runaway Train is worth watching once even though it's not great. The mix of real life trains and sets with miniatures and on set shots is pretty good.

I just found the performances really grating. The moustache twirling warden, the always shouting control station guy, the not so great tough guy accents of Voight and Roberts ... And DeMornay looking grimy. It was a lot for me to overcome.

To me, yes

Speed is fun, but pretty much zero depth

Oh yeah Speed is totally superficial. But fun. Now I have to see Runaway Train.

First hour of The Deer Hunter is the best part of the movie

The pinnacle of Michael Cimino's career.
My only real critique of this wonderful movie is how Mike wears his Class A uniform everywhere. I get it, its for the theatrics of it, but really its kinda silly. You wear your Class A uniform for standard military ceremonial things. You wear them to travel if your leaving a duty station or maybe headed to one. You don't wear them when your at home and headed to a bar with friends or if your attending a local bowling function. Put on cool military hat and wear something comfortable. Maybe Crocs. Ha ha

Jaws on the big screen was everything I'd hope it be.
:shark:

Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', the ocean turns red, and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces.

Mrs. Eephus is big on cozy English mysteries so we watched The Thursday Murder Club (2025) which is new on Netflix. I'm sure its algorithmic similarities to Only Murders in the Building is a total coincidence.

The movie is set in a retirement community where a group of amateur sleuths pass the time reviewing cold cases. A real murder happens right under their noses of course and the game is afoot. It has an excellent cast of senior actors (Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, Richard E. Grant, Jonathan Pryce) who've all made much better movies but they seem to be having a good time. Things are paced pretty well and it's a decent enough film for what it is.

It's based on a book that predates OMITB. The book series is really good. The movie was a B, B-. Would have been better as an 8-10 episode series.

If you haven't seen Ludwig, that's another cozy British mystery I also liked.

If this case had been stretched to ten hours, I might have murdered myself.
