Sorry but... A Christmas Story Christmas is unwatchable.

And I could watch A Christmas Story on a loop.
Oh man - I think the original is unwatchable. I can't imagine how bad this one is.
After that comment, you should be fed to the Bumpus hounds!
Doesn't help that Christmas Story, along with dozens of other movies that seem to be universally popular, I didn't ever see until I was 30 or older. I have 0 nostalgia for many of these movies.
I think that A Christmas Story is an exception and has appeal for all ages. My dad watched it for the first time in his 60s and thought it was really good (and he rarely likes any movie).

I just turned 58 and have never seen it. And I watch a lot of movies

You don't have to have nostalgia FOR the movie to enjoy the nostalgia that's IN the movie.

Tale of Tales

Not sure I would qualify this as horror, but some do (fantasy works). Interesting trio of stories interwoven with not too obvious conclusions. Weird and different for sure. 4/5

WTF was with the King and the giant flea?

Absolutely. I am a late comer to the movie and it totally works on me. I just watched a movie that actually reminded me a bit of The Christmas Story: Summer of '42. It was released in 71 or 72 and is a pure nostalgia piece. Basic comedic premise of some teens are trying to get laid over their summer in Nantucket. I have no connection to the movie and certainly never lived in 1942 but the nostalgia factor sure did work. It's nothing special but it is a funny, sweet and surprisingly somber nostalgia piece.

Fair point. I guess I didn't connect with that either.

There are many "universally loved" movies that I at times seem to be outside looking in.
Christmas story is one for me. I watched it the first time thinking.. Everyone talks about it, I should watch.. Was  for me. Waited a couple years and gave it another chance.. No go.

Going to get REAL heat for this one but Bladerunner. It was one of the first DVD's I ever bought. Watched and thought.. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.. Waited a few months, tried again and nothing. A few years later thought I'd give it one more time and still

I write it off as... if we all loved the same things, life would be VERY boring.

Honestly think you'll get more flack for the Christmas Story. Stay strong, bro - I got your back.

A Christmas Story is set during the last holiday season before Pearl Harbor and Summer of 42 is (obviously) the first summer afterwards. There's a mythology that's grown around WWII and a national loss of innocence. Those who would have experienced this first hand are in their 90s now so I guess we have to print the legend.

RIP to English director Mike Hodges best known for Get Carter (1971). I'm now watching his 1999 film Croupier, which has been in my queue forever.

He also directed Flash Gordon (1980) which actually is pretty decent even though it bombed and became a punch line.

Watching Alien: Resurrection.

1. :bag:
2. Is that Tuco??
3. Do these things not have acid blood anymore?
All I remember about this movie is the one alien looks like it’s made out of cream of wheat

You should dive into the Critters Quadrilogy next (possible there are more)
That really is one of the worst alien designs in movie history. I think they were going for horrific but the result was instead cartoonish.

There's no eloquent way to put it, that movie ****ing sucks.

Friend in the Director’s Guild gave us a bunch of movies last night. (I guess he gets sent about 100 every year for Oscar consideration.)

Anyway, I only know the Michelle Yeah flick.

Any of these good?
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once
  • Tár
  • Till
  • Women Talking

Tar, Banshees and EEAO are legit best picture contenders. Haven’t seen Tar yet but really want. Banshees was amazing. Very funny but be warned it’s extremely sad. EEAO is really funny, super crazy and full of some awesome action. It’s like a Terry Gilliam kung fu movie with a ton of heart.

I have only seen Everything Everywhere All At Once and thought it was good but certainly not great. It started out looking like a really fun film and just ended up taking some left turns with average results.

Starting on my top 25 new watches of the year. Looks like this will be the 3rd time I've posted. Won't be the same with Wikkid's comments and reactions. He seemed the most interested in it- hopefully he can see it from somewhere beyond.

I tried watching A Christmas Story for the first time.
I made it a little over half an hour.
Just not for me I guess.

I made it through all of A Christmas Story Christmas. It wasn't for me but I did it anyway.

You could see the ending coming from the beginning of the movie but it had a couple of laughs and it was nice to see all the old child actors making their returns. I found it surprisingly adult compared to the original, not in terms of adult themes (although there were a lot of drunk jokes even by 70s Midwest standards) but in the character's perspective of Christmas. It was Ralphie, Ralphie, Ralphie with a little of his old man thrown in. The Parker kids were almost peripheral to the story.

I couldn't even make it through the original. No way I'm trying the new one.

Just saw the new Avatar. Much like the first, its visually pretty incredible and worth seeing in the theater. Also much like the first one, the story is ... not great. There were a couple of ties I laughed out loud at how silly it was.

Really excited to see Babylon tomorrow. It’s not a movie I expect everyone to love but it’s very much my kind of movie. Plus I think Chazelle is 3 for 3 so far. Genius director.

I am excited to see it, but every time I turn on HBO I get confused by Amsterdam thinking it's Chazelle's movie.

I suspect they won’t have much in common. Chazelle’s movie is going to be Wolf of Wall Street level insane.

I'm going in with a bit of trepidation. We're suckers for Hollywood golden age history/mythology in this house. I don't expect fidelity but there's a line where filmmakers are just exploiting the past. We only made it to episode 3 of the Netflix "Hollywood" series before throwing in the towel.

It's all fictional characters that are based on real people and events. I assume it's "based" on the Kenneth Anger Hollywood Babylon book. Not in that they are telling those exact stories but that they are making a fictional Old Hollywood world in the image of the book. Marya Gates, a critic with Ebert.com , is an expert on Old Hollywood and she loved the movie. She felt it absolutely captured the spirit and recklessness of the era. I am pretty sure this is going to be my jam.

Violent Night was a lot of fun.
I loved it in the theater and then showed it to my in-laws via streaming. Father in law was giggling the entire second and third act, and it was really fun for me to see others react. It's the most fun I've had with a new movie in a long time.

If you don't mind senseless violence, give it a watch. It's also really festive with a great Santa Claus story built in.

Saw Babylon on Christmas Day. Loved parts of it and loathed other parts. The entire scene in the 2nd half with Toby McGuire and the train tunnel in it should have just been cut from the move altogether. There was already enough shock value in the movie that I don't see what the point was in adding even more over-the-top debauchery.

Picked up 5 dvd's from library this morning. Will watch at least 2 tonight, the rest over next weekend.

Man Push Cart
la chienne
Diamonds of the Night
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
The Banshees of Inisherin

Yeah I would agree. It either needed another pass in the editing room or needed to be expanded into a 6 hour long streaming series. For how long it is, there were still several key characters that didn't get enough development. Some of the yelling and raunch is like 10% too much. It's gorgeous and the set pieces that work, really work though. It felt like being on drugs for 3 hours in good ways and very bad ways. It does sort of feel like the end of the line though. I can't ever imagine another director being given this amount of money and artistic freedom again. There was no way this was going to ever make money or please mass audiences. Just too loud, too long, too explicit and too bonkers.

It is very Boogie Nights but obviously doesn't stick the landing like Boogie Nights did. The music is incredible though, I will check out the soundtrack.

Nice.

It's WAY less embarrassing than what I just went and got from the library that I ordered last week. LINK

Damn you, @Dan Lambskin !! ;)
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio
I saw that on the cover of 3.

I was going to watch The Quick and the Dead as well because I forgot Raimi directed that, and I was laughing that Leo was in that as well.
