To be totally fair, Mel Gibson is on record stating that he believes everyone but Catholics will burn in hell. That would include the main character of this film.
The lead character in Hacksaw Ridge is being persecuted for his religious beliefs. That's especially weird when you know how religious Gibson is.

Play Dirty

Michael Caine movie from 1969 about a group of soldiers who are sent out to destroy a German fuel depot in N. Africa during WWII.  This is a very boring movie and at least a half hour too long.  2/5.
I started to watch this film a few months back. It didn't grab me from the get-go and I bailed. Kind of unusual for me but I'm glad that I didn't stick it out.

I watched Free Fire yesterday knowing what I was getting into and it was worse than expected.  Shapiro Copley still shines in this turd.

I thought it was entertaining enough.

Loving - Another one that I thought I was going to like a lot and just ... didn't. Maybe its the lawyer in me but I wanted to see more of the fight - the legal battles, etc. Instead it was just kind of the slow tale of ... their love story, I guess? Which that's a nice story. But I would have been more interested in a riveting civil rights/courtroom drama.
Agree. Very boring movie.  The first 1/3 or so was interesting thanks to the conflicts with the local sheriff/judge/lawyer but after that it was like they yadda-yaddaed over the best parts.

The Big Sick

Starts off a bit slow, it's not a laugh fest. but ramps up and is really quite entertaining.  Good work by Kumail Nanjiani and Holly Hunter.

Almost Christmas

You're typical dysfunctional family Christmas story. Not a movie that you will remember much if anything about 10 minutes after it's over, but I will say this, Mo'Nique made me laugh out loud more than just a couple of times.

Speaking of which... I watched Superman vs Batman last night. 2 and a half hours of slow internal anguish about how nobody likes them. Blah. Lex Luthor was annoying too.
The only good part was when Wonderwoman and Doomsday showed up and we got some decent action.
Batman: You're evil scum and I'm going to kill you

Superman: But if you do, who'll save Martha my Mommy?

Batman: Wait. Your mommy's name was Martha too? Let's go find her together!

See, I think the live shows are the funniest
It's a me thing - I don't like live shows for podcasts for whatever reason.  I usually skip them when they come up, which mean I skip a lot of WDTGM.

ETA: I think it's my old age and hearing I have trouble in general with shows with too many people as they talk over each other, then add the background noise of the live crowd and I have trouble following along.

After watching the trailer - I don't remember crap about the books
Same boat. I remember loving the first two or three but not reading anymore. And I think I'm mixing up the story with The Talisman, which was awesome in every way.

I read the whole thing but only once - and read the last book in 2004?

Anyway i read that this is something of a "sequel/homage"  and not a direct adaptation

One of the local theaters runs a $5 Tuesday Movie special, along with a free Medium Popcorn with any drink purchase and the last few weeks have been great for a Tuesday Lunch showing. A Movie + Popcorn + a medium pop for under $10

War for the Planet of the Apes - Very well done Trilogy close out.. Left enough of a door open that I hope someone decides to create another trilogy.

Dunkirk - What can I say other then.. If you haven't seen this yet.. GO SEE IT!!!

Atomic Blonde - Just saw this yesterday... Gets a little confusing at times trying to follow all that is going on.. Thought it was well done but need to re-watch it when it gets released to DVD to get a true feeling on it..

And now this week - The Dark Tower - Haven't read the books, but the trailer looks good so will go see it on Tuesday.

and those are just the movies I've made it.. Missed the new Spider-man, Baby Driver.

Hacksaw Ridge:

I think it took me about 3 nights to finish this one, so yeah - I didn't like it much, but I wanted to get through it for whatever reason.  As I put it in the other thread, this is a great story, but a bad movie.  I thought the first 1/2 was laughable with some pretty bad acting and casting choices.  Vaughn doing his best R. Lee Ermey impression and failing.  Honestly I thought the first 1/2 felt made for TV-ish.  Then action hits and it turns into an in your face horror movie assault.  Gibson sure loves his gore.  Long story short, I think this is one of the worst 'Best Picture' nominees I have seen in a bit.
I finally watched this last night on HBO. Agree with most of what you say. I think the bolded is spot on. I had heard the story and looked forward to the movie and wanted to like it (I typically do like this kind of film) but just couldn't. As heroic a character as Doss was, I never felt like I was pulling for him. And I definitely didn't like Vince Vaughn as the DI nor Hugo Weaving as the old man. The love interest is a cutie but overall this movie just didn't do anything for me.

I really enjoyed the movie so I didn't have any of these complaints.

Having said that, the movie made me look Doss up and frankly the movie did him a massive disservice.  This guy was a massive hero that the movie only touches on.

Having never read the books, I was on the fence about seeing this when I heard it was going to be a thing. The fact that they expected to cram like a 10 books and a comic series, let alone Stephen King ones, into a two hour movie seemed ludicrous. And then all the on again-off again, do over stories, I figured it'd suck when it finally got released it'd be too long or too short. I kile SK well enough, but a lot of his stories drone on and on about nonsensical, irrelevant BS.

But saw the trailer over the weekend and thought it looked pretty good. Maybe as a stand alone movie it'll be good (again, never read the books).

Slight hijack: King's Mr Mercedes was a really good non King like story. Actually a detective story rather than his usual.  The book has been made into a mini series for DirecTV. It started August 9th, but will undoubtedly have multiple reruns also. The previews looked good, and I have it DVR'd, but I haven't watched any of the show yet

Thanks for the info

I did the same thing and was blown away. Both by what he really accomplished and by how much they shortchanged what he did in the movie. They could've cut out 30 minutes of the drunken dad and told more of his accomplishments. The interview snippets with him at the end made me wonder about all the interviews from Band of Brothers that we never saw because they never made it past the edit.

I could watch a whole documentary interview with these guys. Louis Zamperini's from "Unbroken" too for that matter.

The movie is apparently a "sequel"

Wait, you are 50??!

Most of the time it's woth earbuds, but I do stuff at the same time and distract easily.  It's like being at a bar and the noises swirl together and I have trouble picking out certain stuff.

Watched Detective Story (1951) last night. Solid police drama and while I am no film historian, it seemed pretty cutting edge based on the movies I've seen. It details one day in a police precinct and while Kirk Douglas is the definite lead, all the other criminals and cops that come through the precinct are given ample screen time. Towards the end of the film a more traditional plot develops, but much of the film lacks a singular straight forward plot. The director William Wyler handles the early lack of narrative focus very well. Wyler's name hasn't retained it's shine like a Welles or Hitchcock, but it should. His films rarely were cutting edge achievements, but few directors ever produced so many films that were so beloved by critics and the general public. Wyler knocked out hit after hit, Oscar nominee after nominee (guy got 15 Best Director nominations, 3 wins over a 30 year period) and directed the biggest stars from Bette Davis to Audrey Hepburn, Charlton Heston to the star of this film, Kirk Douglas. Douglas gives a powerful performance that serves as a precursor to the future cop trope we see of the cop that hates criminals so much that he's willing to cross any line to get them- to the point where you start to wonder who the real villain of the story is. Good cop movie, ahead of it's time and well worth a watch.

Jackie Brown fans would appreciate this. Going to see this August 17th: To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its release, the film will be shown on the big screen. Following the movie will be a Q&A session with lead actor Robert Forster, who played a bail bondsman in the film.

It's a great film and more consistently good than Pulp Fiction.

I love every minute of Pulp Fiction.

But I think that Pam Grier is my favorite character in any Tarantino movie.
I thought the Bruce Willis story was fantastic, and didn't like the Travolta/Thurman date story at all.

I also got tired of Samuel Jackson spouting the same speech over and over.

But overall, it was a very good film.

Drive - not sure how I missed this before.   I really enjoyed this movie.   A little bit of the plot seemed disjointed, unless I missed something but overall really good movie

Almost Famous  (2000)

It's remarkable to me how well this movie holds up.  I get that even when it was released it was about an era 25+ years earlier, but it still looks like a film that could have been released last week.  There's not a bad performance in the cast. And Billy Crudup is the spitting image of Burton Cummings from The Guess Who.

"Holy dexedrine, Hateman, we're getting the call!"

"Fire up the Hatemobile, Slobbin'! I'll scruff my hair & snort these groupie fingernail clippings and i'll be right behind you!.........no, not THAT right behind you.........i know Commissioner Gordon has put out a "please don't do that" on things like my re-write of "Tiny Dancer" to reflect what real rockskanks were like in the 70s, but we're up against powerful forces here and i used my last Mudshark sniff capsule to knock out King Tut. If we don't stop this soon, Gotham will be Completely Famous!

"There's dissin' must be done, Hateman. Let's rock and/or roll!!"

I've said it before: there are plenty of movies about music that don't seem to give a #### about music. Almost Famous loves music, and that's critical to its success for me. The scene where they sing Tiny Dancer on the bus is one of my all-time favorites.

*searches furiously for 'hate' button*
I know it's corny. But I believe it's sincere, and I like sincerity.

I am in wikkid's camp on this one.  I can't think of a movie that I have turned on more than Almost Famous.  If you would have asked me about 15 years ago, it would have been a fave, and now I can't make it through more than a few minutes.
