I'm with jdoogydoog - I think Almost Famous is a great film. Easily Cameron Crowe's best.

I am waiting to hear what 2 or 3 more people say about almost famous before I make up my mind which side to join.
OMG, please tell me how to multi-quote. I try clicking the plus sign, but it never says anything but "Quote 1 post".I know it's corny. But I believe it's sincere, and I like sincerity.

Great movie. One of my favorites in the last 10 years or so.belljr said:Drive - not sure how I missed this before. I really enjoyed this movie. A little bit of the plot seemed disjointed, unless I missed something but overall really good movie
Geez, tell us how you really feel.Arrival
Movies like this are why I roll my eyes whenever people talk about Hollywood running out of ideas or just rehashing boring cliches. Just because you make bad choices watching movies doesn't meant that great, original, thought-provoking movies aren't out there.
9/10
Loved this movie. I held my breath during that whole scene. Finally watched Room. I kept thinking it would be a more sentimental, sappy kinda movie but really liked it. I do have a problem with her not being able to escape from the room, at least the skylight, but whatever. What I really liked is how they kept the focus on the kid until the mom finally broke down after trying to stay strong for so many years for him. Really good movie . 3.5/5
Worse date movie than, say, Neil Labute's "In the Company of Men?"Dunkirk ---- honestly thought it would be better. Felt a tad too long and too much with the overlap/flashback/point of view
Still enjoyed it very much.....wife not so much![]()
I would argue that Teeth is the worst date movie.Worse date movie than, say, Neil Labute's "In the Company of Men?"
If you're in Northern California and you see this, let me know and I'll buy you a beer.Jackie Brown fans would appreciate this. Going to see this August 17th: To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its release, the film will be shown on the big screen. Following the movie will be a Q&A session with lead actor Robert Forster, who played a bail bondsman in the film.

I saw The Emoji Movie with 6yo floppinha.I would argue that Teeth is the worst date movie.
From what I've read, TJ Miller is a tool. The fact that he's in this movie doesn't dissuade me from that notion.I saw The Emoji Movie with 6yo floppinha.
it was amazing*. but yeah, not a great date movie probably.
it actually wasn't as god-awful as I expected. wasn't good, but also wasn't, per a review I read as I was trying to find showtimes, "the end of our civilazation".
Yeah, if you include that the list is very short. So many we don't realize that are based on books/plays/short stories. It's based on a book, though.
Outside of inception and interstellar, there have been few truly original major films recently. Not a sequel, prequel, or based on outside material.
That would be a good nomination for the title. Audition came to mind too. Don't need to give the ladies too many ideas.I would argue that Teeth is the worst date movie.
are you basing this on that vanity fair interview where he explained about leaving silicon valley? From what I've read, TJ Miller is a tool. The fact that he's in this movie doesn't dissuade me from that notion.

yeah- so regarding that... at first I came away with the same feeling as you- came across in the beginning part as an #######. but by the end, I felt like it was all part of an act, and that ultimately he was making fun of himself. made some comment at the end about his best work having been some terrible animation voice-over he'd done previously. with that in mind, I came away thinking he was ok. not exactly a super-talented dude whose career I needed to follow, but at least not the raging ####### he came across as in the beginning of the interview. That's the one.
I am willing to buy the theory that it's an act.yeah- so regarding that... at first I came away with the same feeling as you- came across in the beginning part as an #######. but by the end, I felt like it was all part of an act, and that ultimately he was making fun of himself. made some comment at the end about his best work having been some terrible animation voice-over he'd done previously. with that in mind, I came away thinking he was ok. not exactly a super-talented dude whose career I needed to follow, but at least not the raging ####### he came across as in the beginning of the interview.
not a fan of borat, I take it.I am willing to buy the theory that it's an act.
But it appears to be an act wherein TJ Miller is acting like an ###hole - which reminds me of this quote:
“No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.” ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

Tribe and Victoria on NetflixWatched an odd mix of movies over the last week or so:
The Tribe -
This was the first of the experimental movies I tried. This one is about teens at a school for the deaf. Think on the lines of Kids for this one. The kicker is that it was all in sign language, purposely with no subtitles, and I think I read it featured a cast of mostly non-actors (or was it actors that weren't actually deaf?). Anyway, an interesting experience..
Victoria -
I thought I would like this one a tad more. It was right up my alley as far as my long-take boner goes since it is a 2+hour movie done in one take. I think the handheld action got to me a bit, but it was pretty good and worth the watch.
Hello, My Name is Doris -
Sally Field as a slightly off 60 year old that falls for the new hot young guy in the office. A few funny parts and I was surprised how hot she still was, but mostly just average. I think this one's on HBO now since it was on the DVR.
Of the bunch I would say The Tribe was the best, but it is hard to follow without the subtitles.
Love the dialogue in that movie. There's so much that it can be hard to take in at once. Have you seen/liked other screwball comedies? His Girl Friday
I don't get the appeal at all. :whoosh:![]()
Then don't watch The Front Page by Billy Wilder, w Lemmon & Matthau - same show, much worseAndy Dufresne said:His Girl Friday

I couldn't tell you for sure.Ilov80s said:Love the dialogue in that movie. There's so much that it can be hard to take in at once. Have you seen/liked other screwball comedies?
Yeah, that movie more than almost any other has people talk all over each other and with how old it is, the sound recording isn't fantastic. Also it might just not be a genre that you care for since screwball comedies tend to all have fast dialogue. Bringing Up Baby and It Happened One Night are probably the easiest to screwball comedies to enjoy. If you don't care for those movies, then it's probably just not your genre.I couldn't tell you for sure.
It just seemed noisy to me.

Sure, the very odd Halloween screwball comedy. There are a bunch of great ones, I especially like all the Preston Sturges movies- A Lady Eve, The Palm Beach Story.Arsenic and old lace too
That's definitely the most universally loved screwball comedy (and generally considered the first). It won all the big Oscars. I'm not sure any other screwball comedy was ever as perfect of an all around film.I liked It Happened One Night a lot.
My #1 alltimeJust finished Raiders of the Lost Ark at a local theater that's showing all the Indy movies in August.
It is just an absolutely PERFECT movie.
I've seen it probably 30 times or more and it's exciting and funny every time.My #1 alltime
Went to see All Quiet On The Western Front at an art house theater a couple weeks ago. Good movie."Recently Viewed Movie Thread: Geriatric Edition"
Heads/Ramones was the last concert i saw before moving west in the 70s. Didn't really know either. Didn't get Ramones at all, thought Byrne might actually be a Psycho Killer, but i bought a tape for the trip. Spent my first western yr in a commune in the hills of NM and nobody would listen to TH'77 except to do a dance called 'psycho chicken' (bukbukbawwwwk bukbukbukbukbawkbawk) to the 'hit'. Of course, doing psychochicken in God's country with half-naked hippie chicks has its own rewards, but i was glad to get back to civilization and find the New Wave in full bloom.Stop Making Sense
Perhaps the greatest concert film ever made, I had the pleasure of watching this on the big screen again recently. Brilliant. The Talking Heads are such an interesting phenomenon. If you see David Byrne on the stage without any pre-formed opinions, you might think he's a huge dork. But despite his corny movements and very straitlaced appearance, I think Byrne is as cool as Muhammad Ali - the coolest guy that ever lived. So many concert films are just dull. This is a real stage show, and it features one of the greatest bands that ever hit the stage. I just love this movie.
