Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (22 Viewers)

All About Eve - 8.5/10

I'd always avoided Bette Davis' movies because I find her really hard on the eyes. But now I see why she's considered an all-time great.

The film itself is about 10-15 minutes too long, otherwise I'd give it a 9.

It's a very quotable movie with lots of great one liners and zingers. And the character of Eve is terrifically vampire-like.

I've seen a few of her movies and it's mostly not my thing. Her movies always seem to heavy on the melodrama. The idea of All About Eve sounds like it could have been another Bette Davis melodrama as the veteran actress squares off with the younger challenger. However, the script is so freaking good that the movie stays sharp throughout. All the acting is great and I especially love George Sanders Marilyn Monroe's cameo.

I like Keanu Reeves so last night as I was looking for something to watch on Hulu I stopped when I saw his name. I had never heard of this movie called Knock Knock from 2015. reeves was in it so I gave it a shot. Holy #### it is one messed up tale. As a faithful husband I dont think I would have ever let things get to the point that he does in this flick. The stuff that ensues after his mistake is crazy. I had to really look past lots of plot holes in this flick but when I did and just watched it for what it was I was entertained.

It is interesting to think what would I do in that scenario. I dont think I would go where he went but who knows. :shrug:

I'll say this about Renner, nobody works harder at promoting a movie than he does.  When he's got something out in the theaters he's everywhere trying to sell it.

i hated this movie growing up - it was literally a "well, it's no AAE, but..." benchmark kind of film then - but i took a look at it recently and it is indeed one of those old flicks that middleage does help one understand better. it does get hung up some during the downfall, but is otherwise quite worthy

White Heat was really the last of the great Warner gangster pictures. I loved all the early ones - the ones with Frank McHugh, Alan Hale, various Dead End Kids, Barton McLane, Joan Blondell along with Jimmy/Bogie/EddieG/Raft/Garfield - but it was nice to see them go back to the well just once after the war because production quality was so much better by then. And Cagney just laps it up widda spoon. Top o' da woild!

Guess I'm a lot higher on this movie. I think it's one of the funniest comedies I've seen in years.

TMC aways advertises classic movies at the theaters. Recently I think had Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I would definitely want to see Lawrence of Arabia if it came back to the big screen. I remember seeing Apocalypse Now Redux when that came out and that was surreal. 

Also, there is something called Noir City with Eddie Mueller (he's on TCM Sunday morning noir show). It comes to the Redford Theater (an old restored Detroit theater) and I think it would be cool. They are playing Asphalt Jungle, Gun Crazy and Out of the Past. I just have to convince someone to come with me. Not sure anyone will be interested.

The son liked Ghostbusters, and wanted to watch the sequel.  There is definitely a reason I have watched the original probably 100+ times, and Ghostbers 2 about 4 times.  Oof. 

 
Probably belongs in the Netflix thread since i saw it there, but I prefer this thread:

Nightcrawler is not an X-Men movie but an unsettling neo-noir. Jake Gyllenhaall is fantastic as a young independent cameraman searching the night for fires, car accidents and grizzly deaths so he can sell the footage to local morning news. Jake specializes at playing socially awkward obsessive men. While his character in Zodiac has an unhealthy obsession, this Louis Bloom character is a full on sociopath. He is one of the more scary protagonists I have seen in awhile and despite being horrible,  he's got just a enough of a sense of humor that  the audience still  might root for him. I am surprised Jake didn't get an Oscar nom. Really good movie here that's scary and thoughtful.

RIP Bill Paxton. 

I love this movie as well, I think it was a battle between this and Whiplash for my favorite movie that came out that year.  I was just looking at in on my shelf last night and thinking I need to watch it again soon. I think I said it when I posted about it a few years ago, but I took him as Patrick Bateman level crazy but without the outward charm.

Saw this during my lunch break yesterday.  Pretty good flick.   Something about Jeremy Renner's ex is pretty hot.

It is good. I had a problem with a few too many dialog elements that just didn't ring true, the liberties taken with how much damage a human body can take from assault weapons, but moreso with this being a movie about caucasians having to solve (along with causing) the problems of Native Americans for them. It would have been nice if they could have adapted this so that at least one of the leads was a Native American. I realize it was loosely based on actual events, but it would have been a nice use of poetic license.

My vote would be 1995 for the 90s:

Braveheart, The Usual Suspects, Babe, Sense and Sensibility, Apollo 13, Crimson Tide, 7even, Toy Story, Il Postino, and others.

 
Just finished 2001 on tmc. Hadn't seen it in years. Always been a fan- beautiful, haunting... Admire his willingness to let space be quiet. And always lol at everything past "beyond Jupiter"... Although we recently used that boudoir as influence for a very well received project.

Nothing will touch the '84-'85 sweetspot for me, but '87 had some pretty damn good films too, and a lot near the tops of my favorites:

Full Metal Jacket, Wallstreet, Wings of Desire, Princess Bride, Robocop, Predator, Lethal Weapon, Evil Dead 2, Lost Boys, Good Morning Vietnam, Planes/Trains/Autos, Beverly Hills Cop 2, and others.

I actually mis-typed. Was supposed to be 1987. I year I championed in MoP's short-lived 80's decade breakdown. I think he stopped at '82?

 
Macbeth (1971) - 7.5/10

I've never read the play nor seen a "True" presentation of it but I liked this Polanski version. Reading Ebert's review, it seems to me that he got its essence correct. It's more likely a time of brutality than nobility, IMO, and this film reflects that.

I always feel a little dirty watching a Polanski movie, though.

 
I didn't expect much after reading a lot of negative reviews but I really enjoyed Nocturnal Animals. I thought it was one of Jake Gyllenhal's best roles. Amy Adams was good in it too, especially in the book storyline. Beautifully shot with solid tension throughout. 3.5/5

 
Some proud father/son movie moments this weekend.  Told him to pick out and start whatever movie he wanted while I was putting the 2 year old to bed.  I closed to door in her room, heard about 2 secs of some of the music at the start, and "sweet, The Karate Kid!", and he looked at me like WTF??!!.   He really seemed to like it a bit and kept having funny comments about Mr. Miyagi's words of wisdom.  He also cracked me up by pointing out odd things, so it's good to know he is looking for continuity errors too.  We had a ton of fun with this one.  He said it was good, but the best 80s movie I've shown him so far is Ghostbusters.  Not sure if we will do sequels or not.  Nothing else, it will get us talking about how far down a #### spiral a franchise can go with too many sequels.

Those are both great films. And for me, they were both significantly better than Atonement and The Assassination of Jessie James.

But like anything else, it's hard to completely agree with someone else's film opinion.

I was mostly just being a ####, and agree this is just opinion.  I am not saying they are bad movies, just that they kinda stood out as far as what you see on usual 'best of' lists.  (although, if I remember right, Ebert liked Babe too). 

I know I am in the minority on Assassination of Jesse James, and I get a rock hard movie boner over long takes, and Atonement has one of the best examples of that ever. 

You probably ask 15 people in here, and you'd get 10 different answers as far as what was the best year in a given decade of movies was.

Sense and Sensibility was one of those films that I was in no hurry to watch. But I was completely blown away by how great a film it is. Kate Winslett in one of her earliest roles, Emma Thompson in Top Form, Alan Rickman good as always, excellent supporting actors, humor, romance, and a great director in Ang Lee. It's in my all time Top 10 list, and I would never have expected that.

I'm a huge fan of this movie. Here we have a lead character who is a living Google search with autism. His rote recitation of facts on all these subjects was a brilliant idea for a character, and I think this is one of the more original movies I've seen in a long time.

 
Undrafted - not the best movie at all but it really brought back a lot of memories from playing ball.    Some of it was a but over the top but some of it was spot on.

Watched last night. Excellent movie. The first half is super upsetting. Slept in my kid's bed last night. 

 
Saw Nocturnal Animals last night. Not good. Actively not good.

Memento, Crouching Tiger, Almost Famous (yeah we know you hate buddy), American Psycho, Gladiator, Requiem for a Dream, Snatch, O Brother Where Art Thou, Sexy Beast, Remember the Titans, Best in Show, Meet the Parents, Wonder Boys, High Fidelity.
