"In The Bedroom" (2001)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247425/

Watched this movie for the first time in a few years and it still holds up as one of my top 10 movies I've seen in the past 15 years.

Every performance is perfect. Tom Wilkinson who I like in just about everything I've seen him in is just great.

10/10
I would agree for the most part. It's a really well done film all across the board. Wilkinson hasn't been better. What I really like about it is the pacing. It just flows.

felt like I watched 10 hours of monster genesis story in Godzilla last night. oh, that and some decent actors having to say some really stupid things. when french or whatever woman cried at the end... yep- that about summed it all up.

were there supporters of this thing?
:bag: I liked it better than similar movies like Pacific Rim. All equally stupid, but I thought they did a good job with the look/size/scaling of the monsters here.
I am on the opposite end of that spectrum. At least Pacific Rim, which is certainly not high quality cinema, delivered on it's promise of lots of giant robots fighting lots of giant monsters. Godzilla gave us maybe 5 minutes of that type of content, while also not being high quality cinema.
Even if PR delivered robots and monsters, i still thought is was stupid, but Godzilla was much worse. Plus, they managed to put all the action at night, which made for dark wtf moments for the limited action. Our friend was in The Marketeer, which felt similar in terms of poorly showing action.
Interesting. I think that was a huge beef i had with PR, that I felt too much of the fighting was at night or in the ocean and i couldn't see ####. Could just be a matter of 0 expectations for me as i assumed i would dislike Godzilla as much as I did Pacific Rim. Doubt i would watch either again, so we really are splitting hairs here.
Interesting. I hate when action shots become so harried and frenetic that I can't follow what is happening but didn't have any problem following the action in PR. I remember that being a huge problem for me with the original Transformers film and most of that action was in full daylight. In fact I think it was a huge problem for a lot of people because IIRC in TF 2 virtually every punch, jump and TF Jazz Hands was in super slo-mo.
I haven't seen Godzilla yet, but surely it didn't have anything as dumb as not using your best weapon until like 80% of the way through the movie as a last resort like happened in PR. So I'm giving it the crown in this battle by default.
And, seriously? That's your criticism?

I never said PR was a good movie just that it truly delivered on what it promised and I applaud it for that.

But for a few moments Godzilla just missed on every level.
AND it has a best weapon not used until last resort.

Godzilla/PR/Transformers = CGI masturbation.

These movies don't attempt to elevate themselves above "Dude, that was cool!"

I guess my grumpy old ### still fails to see why it is cool to begin with. For me the love of movies started when "how did they do that???" followed directly after "Dude, that was cool!" Cgi takes that element completely away for me since we know exactly how it is done. Very rarely do I think it looks good, and it is usually when it is more integrated with practical effects. That is why even though i didn't like his last couple movies, i think we need more directors like Nolan working.

Now get off my lawn you punks.

Keaton just blows me away. So natural. I can't see the technique in his acting.

And I think that is why he didn't win the major awards. For some reason people think his real life reflects the character from Birdman. Other than playing Batman I doubt anything could be further from reality but he was so fluid in his performance that I actually think he was punished for it.

Which is stupid. If this were the case, then everyone could simply play themselves in their own biopic. I think that Keaton's performance is one of the funniest, most sympathetic I've seen in years.

Clouds of Sils Maria - Very frustrating movie. First third C-, Second third A-, Final third D+

Who gives a f*** about the snake??

And where in the hell did Kirsten Stewart go?

I know they were trying to make a deep symbolic movie, it just didn't work.

And it didn't help that I had just seen RiffTrax do The Room...Because Juliette Binoche kept going in and out of her Tommy wiseau accent.

But the middle third, where Binoche and Stewart were reading the play and you didn't know whether they were reading the script or talking about their relationship, fantastic. And when they were discussing Chloe Moretz movie in the bar, and Juliette kept laughing, brilliant. Sorgan sucks

The Overnighters (2014)

Documentary about a town in North Dakota nearly overrun by workers who flock there to find work in the oil fields. A lot of them are criminals and others who can't find work anywhere else. Centered around a pastor who works with them and even takes them into his home despite the community objecting. Good view into the socio-economic issues of a small town and a man who tries to follow the core teachings of his church. The pastor is one of the more interesting and complex people you'll find in a documentary.

(4/5)

Absolutely LOVE when directors realize they don't have to add dumb a@@ dialog to fill in the space during action scenes.. just allow us to sit back and enjoy the ride.. made Mad Max a 5 out 5 for me..

Pitch Perfect 2 = meh... C grade

Somewhere it didn't live up to its originality. Choppy movie with a few different stories going on at one time but in the end these stories set up for a spin-off/continuation without the original cast at all. Opens the door for the new girl and maybe Kendrick to start something new. A few funny moments and good one liners but fell short of expectations.

Worth a matinee price or don't mind if you wait and do a budget movie for it.

Went to the theaters 3 times this weekend. Never done that before.

Friday - Mad Max

Saturday - Avengers

Sunday - Ex Machina

All were solid. Mad Max was my favorite by a pretty good margin.

Pretty sure I have never seen any of the older Mad Max movies. Are they actually good, or is this a cheesy/nostalgia thing?

Keaton was excellent but the sheer physicality of Redmayne's performance was an all time great.

Speaking of Birdman, it was a mixed bag and had no business being a Best Picture winner. If the academy really wanted to avoid the historical drama type films, the Grand Budapest Hotel was also offbeat, but much better.

felt Whiplash was a bit slight, which surprised me. performances good, but didn't blow me away. most interesting, to me, were ideas about what it takes to push/challenge kids and people to get better... but again, played out in a very slight/undeveloped manner.

Saw Paddington with the kids last night.

Pretty meh. the mom was an ugly English chick, but then with it being set in London, and a kids movie, should be expected.

Plot, if you can call it that, was fine for a kids movie I guess.

Nowhere near the latest Muppets movies or penguins, or most of the Disney flicks but the kids enjoyed it plenty.

6/10 for kids

3/10 for parents

not a movie you borrow your neighbors kids for an excuse to see.

Yeah? Well your face is slight and underdeveloped.

Bah. It was a fine performance by Redmayne, but aside from the fact that Jim Carrey could have done the physical part just as well, Daniel Day Lewis already did playing Christie Brown in My Left Foot, which is a much better film.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Sheer lunacy. Brilliant. I loved it. How many truly ####ed up movies do you get to see in a year? Amazing stunts, really weird, and campy in a way that few modern movies can achieve. I wish there were more movies like this.

I am a big Wes Anderson fan, but Birdman was a lot better. Budapest was just another baroque, quirky Anderson movie - whereas I've never seen a movie like Birdman before.

I think Grand Budapest was Wes Anderson's best, though Moonrise Kingdom was close. Everything worked for me in Grand Budapest.

Birdman was certainly different than the typical movie but that didn't make it better. I think the positives were great acting and clever filming. The negatives were unlikable characters (which I know you don't don't mind, being a big PT Anderson fan) and too ambiguous an ending among other things.

I saw Ex Machina last night. It was enjoyable but I feel like the hype train is out of control. The dialogue used for exposition is so heavy handed. For example, even a ####### like me knows what the Turing test is. So why do two advanced level coders need to explain it to each other? The timeline didn't feel right either.

It only takes one week for someone to fall for an AI? I suppose that was the point... Finding a guy who is enough of a sucker to "fall in love". But I don't know, it felt forced at times.
That being said... It was still an entertaining movie that kept me intrigued. I just think we need to pump the brakes a bit.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom. I think the relationship between the kids in that movie is the most satisfying emotional experience I've had in an Anderson movie. Budapest, as usual, is a remarkable visual feast. But I'm starting to get tired of Anderson's quirkiness. His movies are brilliant works of art. But they're starting to get very repetitive.

Agree, but I reached that point about 3 movies ago. He brings it visually, but still one of my least favorite critically acclaimed directors.

Sabotage - 6.5/10

One of Hitchcock's lesser known works (not to be confused with Saboteur). Even at 76 minutes it's too long for the material.

But it's worth a watch to see the master honing his craft.

I am glad Anderson makes movies. I really am.

But his autistic detachment from emotion wears me out. I need more than incredible images to make a satisfying movie experience.
