I see you are working on a project. I need to see La Haine. Did you rent it or was it steaming somewhere?
:oldunsure:

It's on that one Criterion channel thing I keep hinting you need to hop on.

All the Kar-Wai's are on there, and that's where I watched Veronique, La Haine, and next is Beau Travail and Last Days of Disco.

Also I could save a lot or money just subscribing to the Criterion Channel instead of just buying them but I guess I like the element of collecting

This was a reason I started it up.   I still buy the occasional disc, but I could feel myself starting to spend more than the $120/year or so that the streaming subscription cost.    Plus, it's not just Criterion flicks.

I had quite a few of the older criterion at one point, then I ended up getting rid of the bulk of my DVDs aside from some all time favorites.  Chucked all the cases and just kept the sleeves in a binder

I believe these are the ones I had but some may have been regular versions

The Seventh Seal

Brazil

 Carnival of Souls

Rushmore

Last Temptation of Christ

Traffic

Royal Tennenbaums

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas

Jubilee

Shcizopolis (this is really damn weird movie)

Naked Lunch

Videodrome

Life Aquatic

Last Days of Disco
Not sure if you'll dig it, but I found it really a refreshing movie when I saw it (a few years after it came out) in my early thirties or so. I remember thinking the film was A/A- quality, if one were to grade. I had left my first city of D.C. for home and the movie sort of was a nostalgia-inducing trip. (Minus the setting of late '70s/early '80s disco, that is.)

I just typed a few more lines going more into it and describing it, but I don't want to spoil the experience of watching it with fresh eyes, so I've edited everything.

Some good stuff in Axe Murderer - especially the parents.   I had only seen that one once, and didn't remember it much at all.  It was a good consolation prize last night.

Damn will definitely have to watch In the Heat of the Night this weekend. 😪

I've got a few of his on my DVR that I recorded off TCM when they did a marathon a few months ago.... Lilies of the Field, Raisins in the Sun, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Going to have to fire one or more up.

I didn’t know you were so into movies,  that was a nice collection
I was a lot more in my 20s, once we had kids I just didnt have a ton of bandwidth for it like I used to.  More focused on TV shows / sports over the last 10-15 years or so

I definitely blew a few grand on DVDs over those years though, especially box sets / collectors edition stuff I’d get suckered into

Got an interesting mix from the library today:  Iron Giant, Talented Mr. Ripley, The Piano, Being John Malkovich, and True Romance.
I’ve still never seen iron giant.  I’ve heard that’s a good one.  I think the kids watched it while I was out of town or something

True Romance is an all time favorite

Mr Ripley kind of sucked

I remember Malkovich being really weird but not memorable (also my phone wanted to predict Malakova for that   )

never saw Piano

Damn.  That's a hot mix.  I like (Ripley, True Romance) to love (Piano, Malkovich) to all-time-favorite (Iron Giant) each of them.

Just got back from Licorice Pizza. For those worried about being out with crowds because of COVID, go to the movies. There were like 5 people in the whole theater. Maybe 30 in the whole AMC. When we left at 9:00, it was a ghostotwn. I didn't even see any employees left in there.

As for the movie, loved it. Reminded me a lot of OUATIH as it's a pure hangout movie trying to recreate 70s San Fernando Valley. It was a ton of fun and full of great music.

I am, but we decided Mohicans since we watched a comedy last night.
I absolutely love that soundtrack and I've never cheated on my wife but that song almost made me. I had an emotionally close call in a Denver coffee shop the morning on my sister's wedding day.

Watched The Lost Daughter on Netflix. I can see it as one of those critics love, but audiences not so much —  Rotten Tomatoes seems consistent with that, with a critics score of 96% and audience score of 45%. Some good performances from Colman and Dakota Johnson (though my wife mostly mocked Colman for frequently staring off into the distance).

Mohicans is just a great movie. I was just watching my bootlegged from laser disc copy the other day. It's one of about three movies that I'm really pining for in 4k.

Magua getting his is one of the best finales ever.

It happens a bit, so it's not a comment on my liking of a movie, but I fell asleep about 1 hour into Mohicans last night.    Woke up just in time for a confusing fight scene with Christian Bale.  Huh, Christian Bale? Now I really confused, but didn't say anything.  Took me a couple minutes then I started laughing- Hulu started up the movie recommendation (annoying feature) which was Hostiles.

I thought for-sure that Midnight In Paris would have already been mentioned in this thread, but a search didn't show any results.

This movie has been a favorite of mine for a few years.  I am a sucker for movies that don't dumb down content in order to maximize an audience.  This script doesn't pander leaving many behind slipping in advent garde references in literature, film, and art from the golden age.

The shots and setting is a love-letter to Paris, the script won Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Woody Allen, and I really like the jazz scoring.  I also love the humor.  It hits all cylinders for me and is currently running on Netflix.

Don’t Look Up didn’t work for me. Just felt like an SNL bit that went on forever. I hated everything about the characters and the story by the end so I guess in a way it was a satisfying conclusion.

Finally watched Nobody’s Fool tonight on the DVR. What a treat. Huge PN fan already but this was an underrated gem. Bruce Willis wanted to do the film so bad he reportedly accepted SAG minimum salary. All the characters are really well played.

9.5/10

Last night was There's Something About Mary.

Today I spent way too much energy trying to track down a bluray or HD streaming option of True Lies.   Why can't I watch this movie?  I grabbed the library's dvd copy.  :sadbanana:  It was going to be between this and Die Hard with a Vengeance tonight, but not sure the other 1/2 will be down for that.
