the killer was really good

climax - Gaspar Noe film about a French dance troupe that drinks LSD spiked punch. Hijinks ensue. Was definitely an interesting watch. Tried watching Irreversible after, we shut it off after about 30 minutes. The pacing and lack of dialogue just wasn’t keeping us engaged. I think I had to subscribe to some service to watch it so need to try to finish it or cancel
I still have Enter the Void on my list to watch

Oh also tried watching Theatre Camp that was terrible and shut it off

Kenan Thompson revives Good Burger 26 years later with Good Burger 2.

Does this set the record for longest time between sequels?

Top Gun Maverick was 36 years
The Hustler to Color Money was about 25 years I think so largest gap I can recall is Top Gun. And as someone noted, as successful as that was, we might be in line for more 80s sequels. I am pretty positive if Michael J Fox didn't have Parkinsons, we would have already had at least a 4th Back to the Future if not several since that series so easily lends itself to sequels.

$20 to stream Oppenheimer

New normal? It did gross almost a billion so maybe an exception but I thought $3.99 to rent / $9.99 to buy was the ball park figure, no?

It'll get there.

I add movies to my list when they first come out and then then just wait for the price to drop.

Lmao...Theater Camp was awesome.
Yeah I like it a lot as well.
Did it ever get funny? Maybe I’ll give it another shot, or maybe you need a performing arts background to enjoy?
I thought it was funny but sometimes humor is subjective. I don’t have a theater background or anything but I do teach HS so I know these types of kids. Maybe that helped?

being interested and aware of theater and kids theater would help. if there's no interest in either- that's the whole point of the movie. plus I could watch Amy Sedaris open drawers and laugh. wait... I HAVE watched Amy Sedaris open drawers and laughed.

Paint was another I saw during my hiatus . It’s like anchorman but with Bob Ross and not funny

And Bodies that was pretty cool and whoever recommended Totally Killer thanks that was a fun one

Ghost In The Shell (1995)

Most of the story doesn't really matter or is even coherent. But it looks cool and feels cool to watch. And it was definitely ahead of it's time.

the killer was really good
I started this last night. After about 15 minutes I thought When is it actually going to start? Holy slow roll. Stopped at that point and decided to watch Fargo. Given the mostly positive reviews I'll get back into it but maybe not ideal after a long/busy weekend.

Yeah first 15 minutes were agonizingly painfully boring but it did get better. I think those first 15 minutes were important to develop his character.

The payoff for the first 15 minutes is pretty great though, it could be a whole movie in of itself.

It’s definitely slow but it picks up a bit. One of the better fight scenes I’ve seen in quite some time

I appreciated the technique of The Killer, especially the sound design which I thought was spectacular. The action set pieces were solid but the plot that linked them together was lacking something. Professional assassin characters have been done to death and Fassbender's nameless title character didn't bring anything new to the genre except his taste in music and old TV guys.

It's a shame they eliminated Tilda Swinton's character because a spinoff featuring her as "The Expert" would probably be a more interesting film

I thought the whole exercise of being entirely subjective was different. Also the constant irony/unreliable narrator was interesting. Everything he tells us is being immediately contradicted by all of his actions.

As I wrap up Noirvember with another watch of The Long Goodbye, here are my thoughts:

  • Pretty incredible list of literary greats involved in the genre: Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Ernest Hemingway, Dashiell Hammett, William Faulkner, James Agee.
  • Directors too from Hawks to Curtiz to Altman to Fuller to Welles to Wilder.
  • The movie that most jumped in my estimation was Odd Man Out, absolutely incredible movie to look at. If someone wants to know what noir should look like, show them this. And what a hunk young James Mason was.
  • Mitchum's Farewell, My Lovely works even if he's 30 years older than Marlowe should be. He nails it and the movie rips but when they transport it to 1970s London a few years later for The Big Sleep, it totally falls flat. It makes me wonder how this new series Monsieur Spade that follows Sam Spade in 1963 France will play. I am skeptical.
  • I am team **** Powell for the best Marlowe
  • I still like Criss Cross better than The Killers, Yvonne De Carlo >> Ava Gardner and I don't say that lightly
  • This Gun For Hire might have been the best movie I watched all month

Not that I'll get around to doing it, but I'd love to do a Noirvember. Guess it would need to be a Die-cember. Is there a post in here with everything you watched?

Steven Soderbergh remade Criss Cross in 1995 as The Underneath. It's been almost that long since I've seen it and it's not available for streaming but it's one of the director's lesser efforts.

It's doubly unfortunate because The Underneath is my family's closest brush with the film industry. My sister's house in Austin was used as the home of Peter Gallagher's character. She tells a story of Soderbergh visiting her house when choosing locations and doing that finger framing gesture while checking out her stairway.

Under the Skin (Max): IMDB 6.3. 2013 movie with Scarlett Johannsen as an alien(?) who impersonates a human and lures men into her lair. This was barely a movie - it was really trippy, with almost no dialogue and bizarre visuals. The score was jarring, but really good for the movie, I thought. Just when I was thinking there wasn't really going to be any story involved, it took a slight turn and got... weirder, I guess. I like that it didn't hold your hand, but this was a little too out there for me. I can't recommend it unless you just really want to see ScarJo naked. Even those scenes were intentionally cold - there was more heat when she was clothed and walking.

Finally got around to Aftersun (Paramount) and I’m stunner. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Father daughter movie, very slow and intentional but basically a perfect movie. I’m in awe and tears.

Some people love this movie, I didn’t get it at all either.

Oh lord, and you don't have kids. It's in the queue, and I'm guessing I will be a sobbing mess. Thanks for the rec and heads up.

Criterion has a couple good themes again this month.

Hitchcock for the Holidays - there's a couple early ones I wanted to watch, and Rope has been one I want to get to again.
Holiday Noir - @Ilov80s is there anything good in there? I only recognize Lady in the Lake
I've been wanting to watch Ozu, and that's the director of the month.
I don't normally pay attention to the actor ones, but this month is Starring Parker Posey.

I dot like Lady in the Lake, I just can’t take the 1st person POV. They Live By Night is a classic noir, the Romeo and Juliet of noirs. Blast of Silence is fantastic- that’s a low budget must see imo.

Right though my feelings on the movie were definitely influenced by the girl I’ve sort of adopted. I’ve been updating that story in the teenager support thread and the girl in the movie definitely reminded me of a younger version of her.

My comment was in no way meant to undercut that relationship either, sorry if it came off that way or sounded flippant. I just know it was more me already weeping at anything hinting at that father/daughter dynamic and if it was powerful enough to connect with others I will be a puddle for sure.

Oh no I didn’t take it that way at all. Just saying I probably would have had a different reaction to it a year ago and I’m sure it will hit you hard.
