Just watched War Dogs, the Jonah Hill arms-dealer movie, and it was ok.  I didn't know the true story it was based on, but it held my attention throughout.

More importantly though, there was this actress playing Miles Teller's wife (Ana de Armas) that was like a walking/talking piece of art.  MARONE this is a beautiful woman.  I was like Michael Corleone seeing Apallonia ... thunderbolt!

posted this in the netflix thread...

I think we saw this movie on Netflix- but apologies if it was Amazon...

4 Lions- british satire/comedy about british domestic terrorists (muslim), with the kid who plays Nas on "night of". found myself laughing a lot- it's goofball, with most of the humor coming from the goofball idiocy of the guys. as muslim jihadists, there's a bit of a... creepy... undercurrent to the humor, especially what their ultmate target is*. turns out this was made in 2010, so the proliferation of attacks on the continent and abroad hadn't really hit yet. I liked it- found it funny- but wonder whether it could be released today... i don't think so.

*

they settle on attacking the london marathon... this was made and released before Boston... so made both the wife and I cringe and wonder if there was any influence. fwiw- they're dressed, literally, as muppets for this.

I'm hoping somebody watches this. partially because I found it genuinely funny and would recommend it for that- but would love to compare thoughts about the whole jihadi terrorist thing working/not-working as comedy. "rubber dinghy rapids"

eta: here's a scene pretty representative of the humor throughout.

anybody?

funnier than most things out there, IMO.

Furious 7:

I am out.  Really liked 5, 6 I thought was OK but getting a bit much, and then this one just completely went ape #### bananas.  Just too much for me, and the tone was set right when we meet up with Mr. Statham (is it the first scene?).  I mean we are talking near -Crank level of ridiculousness. Of course at the silliness ramps up, so does the CG, which is a double whammy for me.  Still a tad more fun than that Terminator movie I watched the other night, but I cared just about as much.  The one good thing about this movie is that it should prove to people once and for all that Nathalie Emmanuel is the hottest thing on Game of Thrones, and it's not really that close.  4/10

Kubo and the Two Strings

A work of art. This stop-motion animated adventure took years to make. Highly recommended if you have kids, but I saw it with adults and I loved every minute of it. Incredible.

TRAILER
Caught this yesterday, it might be the best cartoon I've ever seen. A really, really good cartoon. Excellent cartoon.

But still a cartoon and I had trouble hanging in.,

Me Earl and the Dying Girl:

Really liked the idea of this one, and thought Olivia Cooke was fantastic as Rahel.  I will also admit to it getting quite dusty at the end of the movie.  That said, overall I think it was about average.  Not that I watch a ton of them, but I would really like to see one of the these teen movies where every character isn't the coolest person ever.  Everybody here is so witty and cultured and insightful, it just starts to wear on me a bit.  Maybe just throw in one ####ty teacher or a normal parent - something.  6/10

I liked Terminator: Genisys.

Sure they just ticked off the boxes, broke no new ground, cast Jai Courtney, and didn't hold a candle to 1 & 2.

But it was entertaining enough.

One of my favorite  flicks now.  The 3 Building jump alone is worth admission :excited:

Don't know if it's available yet, but Bad Moms was worth a rental.

It played it a little too safe for my tastes and laid on the "men are the worst things ever" vibe a little too thick, but overall I laughed quite a bit.

Don't go in expecting it to be The Hangover, you will be disappointed.

Now is this in the lines of this is just a great action movie, or this is just over the top and dumb in a Sharknado type of way, but you love every bit if it because of that?

remember what I recommended re: four lions?

for this one, scratch that- reverse it. (rip gene)
Damn it I forgot - it's probably a bad reboot (I expect that), but this is also one of those horrible toned down pg-13 reboots too, right?  ie Robocop and Total Recall.

it's terrible. really terrible.

but yeah... maybe it's pg-13. I don't remember any nudity or super-graphic violence. so there's that.

have you seen "Tully" or "Mean Creek"?  both films seem to have an undercurrent of "authenticity" that i felt worked albeit for different reasons.

Haven't seen or heard of Tully, but I did see and enjoy Mean Creek.  Will look into the other one.

Great fun action.. thought the revenge storyline was decent enough and the way they handled the ending with Walker was well.. .

haven't watched any Sharknado's ... no interest in them.

Seconds 8/10

Whoa. One part Rod Serling, one part Kubrick, and two parts David Lynch.

A good criticism of consumerism (before it was worn out to do so).

The contrast of the jazz-like bacchanalian baptism symbolic of youthful creation contrasted with the "put on a face" party filled with worn out consumers was particularly poignant.

I don't know if I've ever seen a Rock Hudson film. He was great. Several good performances.

Worth watching.

I like 3. It's fun. The truck chase is awesome. Would have been better with anyone other than Nick Stahl.

T4 is god awful.
Cool.  We just disagree on 4 and 5.  I think I give 4 points just because at least it TRIED to do something different or in a different timeline.  I liked the idea of seeing the aftermath and having the series turn into more about the war and survival.  Not saying it was successful in doing any of that though.

I really couldn't get on board with much of anything in this new one.  I thought the casting and acting all around was terrible (honestly, the high point was probably Arnold).  Really surprised me that Clarke can be a bad ### in GoT with no weapons and just how she looks at people, but here she fell flat for me while toting huge guns.  Also thought the guy who played John was bad too.  This one lost me early (definitely with Asian Robert Patrick shows up), and didn't pull me back in.

I fully admit that these blockbuster action movies aren't my thing for the most part.  If I think they look ####ty, it's time for grumpy old fart with his arms folded shaking his head for the rest of the movie.  IF the characters and/or plot are good enough and I care about that I am definitely going to cut the rest some slack and go with it.  Wasn't the case here for me.

The problem with most summer blockbusters these days is that they're just no good. Michael Bay ruined everything with his insipid Transformers movies.

I didn't even bother seeing the new X-Men movie this summer.

I did go see E.T. in the theater last weekend. What a treat!

Hear, Hear!!  It's all banging and clanging with not a drop of soul.  Every once in awhile there is one or two that stand above the rest but they are too few and far between.  I'm with you, Andy, I hesitate to even consider going to the theatre to watch some of the big bang movies as I find them noisy and tedious.

I did see the new X-Men movie and you made the right call, it's not that good.

eta:  on ET.  Saw that a couple years ago with my son and it held up well for the most part and that was because of the story itself.

Having said that, I did like CA: Civil War.

Not as good as Winter Soldier, but still fun.

But Batman vs. Superman and Bourne were turrrible.

Star Trek and Finding Dory were bland.

My favorite In-theater movie this year is Jungle Book.

those two were the only ones I saw this summer... and I agree. I liked them both fine, but was hoping for more. bland is pretty dead-on.

looking forward to renting jungle book with the kids.

oh! some network had the original Willy Wonka on last night... watched the last half with the kids, who loved it. honestly one of my favorite performances ever (rip gene wilder), and a real soft spot in my heart for the movie.

I think it was the first movie I ever saw in the theaters... I was something like 3 or 4. what I remember most is running out, as fast as I could when augustus goes up the pipe... and then my mom catching up with me in the lobby- doing her best to contain her giggling as she tried to coerce me back in, which she did. by the time violet turned violet, violet- I was out. she didn't catch me until I was partway down the sidewalk.

I didn't see the rest of the movie until college, high off my ### on a big screen as part of our movie series. good thing I ran out the first time- the psychadelic boat/tunnel/glimpse-into-hell scenes right after that... hfs. but this movie- it's filmed so brilliantly, and does such an amzing job bringing daul's vision to light.. that when you add wilder's performance...  ... one of my all time favorites.

"Hell or High Water"

It's funny....I didn't think I wanted to see this movie because I thought the trailer was a little hokie and gave too much of the movie away, and it certainly didn't appear to be a movie my wife would want to see.  So on Friday night surprises me and says, I think I want to see this movie.....so I say, sure...let's go.  (I'll go see just about any movie - just to go to the movies.)

This might be the best movie I've seen this year.  It's really great!  Jeff Bridges sort of over plays the crotchety old Texas Ranger, but he's still good.

It's the best role of Chris Pine's career, and Ben Foster is fantastic!  There's a character playing the role of Bridges partner that's really great as he stands around taking insult after insult from Bridges.....and the secondary characters throughout the entire movie are all great.

Good drama, good action, really great dialogue, humor in the right and appropriate places.  I couldn't recommend this movie enough.

5 stars.

I loved this movie.  I thought it was unique and I really liked the RJ Cyler character.  I enjoyed the unique movie title and movie making scenes.

And the ending when he opens the book was great.  I've seen it twice and liked it very much both times.

Saw Kubo and the strings over the weekend with the kids. very pretty. but IMO, very miscast with the leads- who felt off every time they spoke. the kids (9&5) loved it, it was so-so for me beyond the visuals. very obvious throughout (ok.. yeah.. kids' movie, but still) except I couldn't guess at the ultimate ending, which I liked.

I didn't have a problem with the voice actors, but that isn't a battle I'd fight very hard. Still, a beautiful movie.

also rented The Witch. kind of a swing and a miss, but worth it for the lighting alone- lots of candle-lit scenes that are stunning, and help with the creepy factor.

Was similar to Blair Witch in that it's an 85 minute excursion for a five minute payoff.  Still, I liked this one much more and thought the atmospherics, including the lighting, kept the tension throughout.  The goat was a compelling addition to the genre, imo.

I'd say if you are looking for a slow burn fantasy this one is pretty good.

I thought what worked about Blair Witch was that as soon as you get to the woods, #### starts happening... and what's great/unique about it is that it's not much... but just enough to have them freaking out. I thought the end of BW could have been even more vague.

seeing the witch so early in the Witch... I think it would have been better served keeping her more of a mystery and keep the audience questioning whether they're just crazy (ala the shining) or whether there's actually something definitively sinister afoot.
