"Trolls"

My 6 year-old son was amused.I think it was aiming for a kind of humor found in The Lego Movie but it was fairly run of the mill. It's such a trifling, threadbare plot that you forget anything about the as you walk to your car.
great. the wife already has me scheduled to take both kids to thsi one while she gets to take the older one to the harry potter monsters offshoot.

yeah, i think there was a trade-off planned for us too. His mom gets to take him to something like "Moana" maybe? I don't know exactly but I am glad that I got to knock this out early.

I was being sarcastic- you about nailed what my expectations are for Trolls. I've been "scheduled" to see all of the lesser throwaway flicks, while she gets to see the ones that are more interesting. stupid wife. ... actually... smart wife. stupid me.

moana looks promising.. I guess.

oh!

speaking of throwaway flicks... we saw American Pastoral in an actual theater over the weekend on a rare date night. Ewan McGregor, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Connoly... I made a show to the wife of enjoying it, just to convince both of us that it was worth the effort... it's not. bit of a mess, really.

Girl on a Train

I had heard more negative reviews than positive so I wasn't going to see it.  My wife really didn't want to see it, so this weekend she was out of town and the scheduled showing at one particular theater made it an only available option.  I was more than pleasantly surprised.  I really liked this film a lot.

And one particular scene at the end of the movie when a female audience member made a really loud sound like she was about top vomit was above average.
I mentioned above that my wife and I enjoyed but it was a little difficult to follow all the moving parts, until the end which brought it all together and made you want to re-watch it again so you can follow it a little better.. Pretty good movie making if it can confuse you for an hour and a half and then after it is over make you want to re-watch it again

Hope it was better than Human Stain, even tho that wasnt all that bad but for one of the worst casting decisions of all time.

I dont' remember reading any of Roth's work... but I vaguely remember Stain... and what I remember reminds me of Pastoral. you have to buy into a series of narrative conceits to enjoy the movie, IMO. I didn't.

i like Ewan a lot but his career is all over the place. mostly, he's got terrible taste in roles lately and it's going to catch up with him.

Big fan of Dr. Strange and the movie didn't disappoint.  Took a little longer in the beginning than I'd like, but the payoff was worth the setup.

Why did they make Cumberbatch use his American accent?  He does it well, but it's hard to disconnect and "forget" that he's got a pretty groovy natural accent when you see him talking.

Caught up on some summer movies this weekend.

Independence Day: Resurgence

It was like they took everything that made the original so endearing and did it again...but way worse.  Still a little fun, but way over the top CGI, overacting, and a totally ridiculous plot. 5/10

X-Men Apocalypse

Again enjoyable I guess for what it was as a popcorn flick, but just all over the place.  Felt like a network TV show where characters randomly change their entire motivations and flip sides on a whim, and where people move back and forth between being not able to control their powers when the plot dictates it and being able to control them perfectly again on a whim.  Apparently 45 year old Jean Grey still couldn't control her powers even a little it in X3 but 17 year old Jean Grey has no problem.

And I have noooooooo idea where the heck this thing fits in the jacked up X-Men timeline. 5/10

The Nice Guys

Pretty good.  The trailers definitely made it a little less enjoyable as they gave away most of the funniest parts but it was still good times.  The kid actors were bad but Gosling and Crow were good, and the story was actually interesting. 7.5/10

Watched The Party with Peter Sellers. It is dated, because Seller's character, is kinda racist now. And other than the Drunken Waiter, no characters stuck out to me. I give it a C-

saw the latest ergent movie. not that the first ones were terribly hot- but this was just terrible. keep getting some good actors to play the grown-ups at least.

You'll be happy to know that the third one was so awful and did so terribly that the fourth one is being made into a TV movie and won't hit theaters.

Captain Fantastic

Solid with some great moments.  Viggo always good.  The kids were superb.  Frank Langella was misused.  Just didn't give him anything to do.  The script needed a few more passes.  Would have preferred if it was just a bit more serious overall.    6/10
This is about spot on.   I am not saying it was bad but it had so much more potential.   Needed to show happy healthy mom too at the beginning.

The Big Short:  Really good.  About a few guys who foretold the housing crash of 2007-2008.   Good story, great acting.  No action as in guns, fists, killings, but suspenseful none the less.  Probably not a chick show, at least the chicks I know.   Damn good movie.

4.2/5
I thought it was great, wife couldn't wait for it to end.

Bad Day At Black Rock - 8/10

This is a really good movie from 1955 directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven).

Imagine "High Noon" directed by Tarantino. The tension is ever present and builds throughout the movie and leads to a surprisingly violent ending.

Spencer Tracy is great and Robert Ryan's villain is a bad dude. Also features Walter Brennan, Earnest Borgnine, and Lee Marvin.

The Most Dangerous Game (1932)- 7.5/10

This ended up being a good, tightly packed action film which I didn't expect from a film this age. There are some over the top bits that appear to carry over from some of the cast's stage acting past. But the effects work is fun. A lot of the people involved here also worked on King Kong either during or immediately following the filming of The Most Dangerous Game.

I haven't seen either of them. Black Rock, I always think of an allan sherman song that uses the title.

One of those underrated actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. He's always reliable in films like William Holden and Glenn Ford. I always liked Robert Ryan after seeing him in The Wild Bunch (with Borgnine and Holden among others) and boxing noir, The Set-Up. Ryan was rarely great but he was always good.

Its a great doc but my money it's always been "Thin Blue Line"  but whatever. Morris turned the genre inside out without saying a word.

Saw this premier line at my local AMC.  For $15/year you get perks including a special lines that cut the regular line at the box-office and concession stand.

I assume if it is successful the price will just go up.

Seems like a great way to annoy most of your customers.  Where does it end?  The grocery store?

Stayed up and watched the entire Hoop Dreams (thanks For the heads up, wikkid) after catching the tail end of another favorite, Endless Summer. That was a lot of tv... good tv, but forgot how long Hoop was. remembered having to fight to hold a pee  In the  theater when I first saw It.

Looked up 'where they are now' as I always do the couple times Ive seen It since. Sad to see the male Influences, arthurs dad and williams brother, had both been murdered.

It's a lot like the old Stubs except that the dedicated line for members takes LONGER than the regular line.

Still, it's worth it for the concession upgrades and $10 bonus coupons you get for spending money at AMC. It also gets you waived service fees on Fandango.

The Lost Weekend - 6/10

Yes, Milland‘s performance is good. But it's two hours of watching misery. It might have been interesting 60 years ago, but not today...at least for me anyway.

The Thin Man - 8.5/10

Very witty and great banter between Powell and Loy. Really enjoyed it.

Rachel Bloom is a dead ringer for Myrna Loy and could probably play her in a bio-pic. Though she would really have to tape her breasts down.

That series of films - 3 of them maybe - are fantastic. Whipsmart writing and delivery by the leads. Powell is also fun in "My Man Godfrey".

After my cousin made Pirates4, he and his new pal Depp did more than discuss a remake of Thin Man. Disney decided it was too small considering what they were paying both of them in multi-picture deals, so nothing came of it. Cuz asked me who my Nora would be and i said ScarJo which put him off cuz she'd auditioned for Nine and he didnt like her and couldnt imagine her doing comedy. Some links to her SNL work changed his mind on that. I'm sure its still in the back of his mind but he's got 2yrs work on the Poppins sequel now.

Cut away from Celtics game, to watch bits of Endless Summer, then all of Dreams and most of Woodstock that followed.  Good doc night, but good night, doc.

it's fluff- but I can't tell you how much I love Endless Summer. even the miserable wife- who hates old movies, and anything to do with sports- was transfixed.

that was a late night for you.

I should've tried to stay up for the richie havens opening

I watch the clip all the time but Cocker's "With a Little Help from me Friends" gives me an even more massive earection in context. With Pavarotti's (i know you're not a fan) "Nessun Dorma" in Paris and the Japanese 10,000-voice version of LvB's Choral Symphony, my favorite piece of recorded music performance.

Dashiel Hammet, correct? Love those movies. The Glass Key is must-see, as well.

Saw The Handmaiden over the weekend. Interesting (and long) film. A combination of a slow played tale of a triple cross, unlikely love story, fetishism and a healthy dose of soft core lesbian hijinks (which I has no idea was part of the deal going in) set in 1930's Korea and Japan. Very nice cinematography, settings and costumes. Not a must see, but if you want a drama and can't find anything better it's worth watching.

Speaking of B&W cinema, I just saw a documentary about Vichy France: "The Sorrow and the Pity"... absolutely brilliant, imo...the best documentary I've seen since "Bus 174"... I had never even heard of it till it came on AMC the other night, and I'm ashamed of that fact.  It's four hrs long, & still too short.  @El Floppo, trust me, gb...well worth it...& extremely relevant today... again, imo.

Unfortunately, it's devastatingly relevant to me, especially because of my fondness/penchant for both the glorious ol' black & white cinema, & subject matter... :kicksrock: :bag:
Bummer. Hope you have a gal or someone else that sticks/stuck by you.

One thing that struck me was how similar in style Milland is to James Stewart. I wonder who copied whom.

thanks for the headsup. seen bits and pieces- can't find the time to see it in total (although as I write that, I think I saw it in a film class in college). yeah- just noticed it on tv recently.

stayed up and watched Nightcrawler. did not buy into jake g's character at all- either a problem with the writing or his delivery for me... either way, as a result did not enjoy the movie.

he's an actor that I haven't quite clicked with. i can't put my finger on it what the issue is. I know what he was going for in "Nightcrawler" and it was fine. I just don't know that he's the right actor for it. it's pretty obvious to me that this was Gilroy's first feature as a director.

I love this movie.

I think Jake Gyllenhaal's character makes a lot of sense if you imagine he's an autistic dude who's sole consciousness was formed by reading thousands of Wikipedia entries.
