So I'll be making a decision within 48 hours whether to invest in the film I mentioned a couple of days ago.

You guys uniformly loved Blue Ruin, right?
I think it was one of the best movies of the last few years that I have seen. Curious what the new project is about.
You can glean some details from here

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mustangisland/mustang-island

That's the original kickstarter. There's lots more I can share once the deal is finalized, but for now I need to be prudent.

Did you say this new project was by the director or the lead actor from Blue Ruin.

IMO that makes a huge difference. I would be far more like to back the director than the talent.

Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Solid continuation to the story. Marvel is doing a great job using so many characters and using them well.

And not gonna lie. .. I love Scarlet Witch. Love. Ultron himself was Ok but the better parts off the movie were just the heroes interacting. The scene with them trying to pick up Thor's hammer was great.

The Martian

Two thumbs way up. Loved it. Feels heavily marinated in real science and astrophysics. Entertaining from start to finish, and probably the best movie I've seen all year.
saw it too.

was pretty ok on it, but overall solid (well made, paced and acted). thought it was heavily formulaic (pitch: hey- instead of the shuttle or space-station, let's put Sandra Bullock on Mars... she's booked? ok.. how about Matt Damon?) and didn't get into any of the psychological aspects of being stranded on a planet... which would have made it "good" instead of "ok" for me. but yeah, it's well made and kinda fun and feel good, so

we saw it in 3d due to limited window for viewing for us. does not need to be seen in 3d
I agree. Very entertaining Summer/Christmas blockbuster type - really entertaining popcorn movie.

There were some holes and the psychological aspect was missed and I think was a glaring miss.

Really had some good funny spots and emotional moments. Overall....a real fun, entertaining movie.

Entourage 7/10. Wasn't great, wasn't bad. It was a decent continuation of the series. If you liked the series you will like the movie.

The book didn't really delve into deep psychological issues either.

Life Itself

The Roger Ebert documentary. I grew up on Siskel and Ebert. They weren't just reviewing movies, they introduced me to a world of cinema that I knew nothing about and was unprepared for. I think it's ironic that their critics blamed the TV show for catering to empty, big budget films. Nothing could be further from the truth. Siskel and Ebert deftly devised a way to lure viewers in by reviewing blockbusters while simultaneously touting and promoting much smaller, far more ambitious movies.

This movie is tough to watch at times, as it delves into Ebert's cancer. But it's a fantastic documentary.

Two thumbs way up.

RIP Siskel and Ebert.

"When Marnie Was There" - BOOOOORRRRING!!

Anime drama with no talking creatures, magic, humor or action. Just a depressed tween with an active imagination.

1/5 would not bang.

Orphan

Was on IFC or SyFy. A couple adopt a girl from Russia. Then bad things happen. The ending is ridiculously stupid. The father was an insipid dingbat. The mother was an unlikeable witch. The two biological kids were ok. The movie itself was stupid. Watch it just for the ridiculous twist at the end. It is almost like they decided on a premise that was so off-the-wall that no one would believe it, just so they could say, "You never guessed!."

oh... right... we saw a recent dramatization of Kon Tiki.

other than throwing in a couple of "it's only guys on a boat for a bunch of time... better throw in some close calls!" scenes, it was a decent enough watch and interesting to get into a little bit more of the man and back-story. and still such an amazing story.

Been playing a lot of volleyball over with the Chronicle staff. Afterward, we hang out and drink beer to infinity. Evidently my post game cinematic musings inspired one of the film critics to ask me if I wanted to start joining him for the Tuesday night screenings he attends. That might be one of the most treasured invitations I've ever received.

He just wants to bang you.

Age of Ultron made me realize I really don't like superhero movies and I should stop watching them.
that's where i am at really. i just stopped watching them awhile back. I caught the first Capt America, the first Iron Man and the first two of Nolan's Batmans. I can barely watch Daredevil on Netflix. I skipped Avengers and pretty much else. I think, as storytelling goes, it's ridiculously tedious on the screen because you have to essentially paint by-the-numbers in order to make the films.

The second Capt America is the best of the bunch.

The Daredevil TV show isn't great. Arrow is better than good.

Both Thors and Avengers were pretty dull, as was Iron Man 3.

I honestly don't even remember what I've seen or not... gave up, because... not that into it.

I think it was Iron Man 2 that made me realize I'm not that much into them. I intend to check out Guardians but I've missed a bunch of the newer ones and doubt I'll ever see them.

Have liked all of the MCU movies I have seen (all except IM 2 and 3 and F4 I think) but didn't care for Ultron for whatever reason. Also really liked DD on Netflix.

My favorite of the bunch was GOG by far

really looking forward to Civil War

I watched Ultron again from home after seeing it in the theatre and liked it much better on the second viewing. For me anyway, there's just so much action crammed in it's tough to digest at first viewing.

Thanks...maybe I will give it another go

I think disliking super hero movies is more about managing expectations than anything else. They're not all good, of course, but by now you should understand what your signing up for with films like these.

Had a chance to catch the 2 big movies this last week

The Martian - I knew after watching it that there was something missing and after reading EF's review he hit on it with the emotional aspect. That along with the ridiculous global fawning in the last 20 minutes over the main character. I respect Ridley Scott's body of work but he really could have done a better job with this.

Sicario - This maybe my favorite film of the year. Real intense from the get go. I easily could repeatedly watch the black suv's scene going into Juarez on a loop. I know Del Toro is getting a lot of hype for his performance, but I also really liked Josh Brolin as I bought into his character as a veteran undercover agent. Really great job by director Denis Villeneuve on this one.

Went to see Maze Runner 2 with my daughter and her friends last night. While I thought the first Maze Runner was meh, this one had a ton of action and zombies so I was extremely happy with it.

This is the point for me. I was blown away with the Toby McGuire Spiderman movies(first two anyway) and when IM1 and the Nolan Batman movies arrived it was a whole new level of wow for me. Now, however, I am accustomed to the effects, the story lines, the villains, etc. and I find myself chugging through the movies just cuz as if it's what I am supposed to do. I have reached burnout on superhero movies.

Hopefully the upcoming Star Wars will be just different enough and it can be my new thing.

started it late last night, and then couldn't turn off even though I'd seen it before... Flirting With Disaster. don't remember where this fits in on Russell's filmography, but IIRC, it's early or first. a bit more sit-commy than I remembered, but the San Diego family was ####### priceless. pretty much every encounter along the way was great. loved the Rave son at Alda/Tomlin's... licking the armpit... tea leoni looking fantastic (and I always had a soft spot for Arquette too). stiller basically does his usual thing- but the timing worked great, especially with the ensemble.

If anyone still buys BluRays, GoHastings is having a B1G1 sale on used BDs (and games/music/books).

It's more than that. I do that with other action movies.

The thing that gets me is the comic book style of acting casual and saying lame one-liners while the world explodes around you. That style is so played out and was never great to begin with. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man is the worst offender. And I really like RDJ as an actor.

I'll stop, the thread isn't about debating this topic

Dope. I liked it quite a bit. Good music, Pulp Fiction vibe, sexy ladies, funny, and I play basketball with the gangster that shot up the burger joint.

I like the origin stories but sequels usually don't do it for me.

So will there now be a new Spiderman? I'll check that one out. He was always my favorite.

Yeah not into them. I'll watch them when they make it onto hbo or Amazon but don't really care. However I really like the xmen movies. Go figure

I keep beating the drum of Capt America 2. I really plays more like a Bourne/spy movie than a regular super hero movie. Action scenes are great. Don't get the love for GotG.

Oh boy, stay away from Avengers 2 then.

Hidden (2015) - 7/10

A good 'family trapped in a fallout shelter after an apocalypse' movie. Don't read anything about it, just watch ($3.99 on Amazon).

That has been a staple of comic books, and action movies in general, forever.

-Yippee kai yay mother ######!

-You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

-See you at the party!

-You're the disease, I'm the cure.

-Hasta la vista, baby.

-I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ###… and I’m all out of bubble gum.

-Remember Sully when I promised to kill you last? I lied.

-You call that a knife? This is a knife.

-Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

-Dead or alive, you are coming with me.

-Go ahead, make my day.

-Let off some steam, Bennett.

-Consider that a divorce.

-I have had it with these motherf***ing snakes on this motherf***ing plane!

-The name's Bond. James Bond. (Bond has been doing this exact thing for over 50 years).

We could start a thread dedicated to the subject and it would hit 100 pages on the first day.
