Straight Outta Compton.

What a good movie. Blown away at how much I liked it.
Watched this again last night because there was nothing on and frankly, I was looking forward to the music.  I really don't think I can praise this movie enough.  And I wasn't even a fan of the genre that much.

I like the genre, but I understand. The only movie I can remember liking this much in this genre was 8 Mile.

I watched it last night.  I didn't expect to like it but liked it very much.  I've never been much of a rap or hip hop fan, but I remember most of the stories that were highlighted throughout the movie.  Is/was Suge Knight the bad-### that he was portrayed to be in the movie?  How did he manage to escape a drive-by bullet?

Suge Knight is a thug,

Hmmm...I've had it on my dvr for a while and just deleted it. Maybe I should record it again.

Everest - The first half is pretty boring, I actually fast forwarded through much of the talking scenes. The second half is better but it's really not a movie I would recommend. 2.5/5

I think I found out about Blue Ruin from this thread and loved it, so I was excited about the positive comments about The Green Room from the same director. Meh. Pretty generic, nothing really special. Disappointed. 2.5/5

Meru is the movie you want to see about mountain climbing, I may have mentioned it in this thread.
It is a documentary but it blows Everest away. If your going to watch only one doc movie in your life
this is it.

thx! Trailer looks awesome.

I'm not a documentary kind of watcher but Meru makes you curious, then grabs you,
then at the end you realize this thing doesn't have any car chases or explosions and is better
then a lot of "action" movies. Insane footage of an avalanche and crazy shots when they are on a
VERTICAL ascent to the peak.

Really is VERY good

Everest..... men.  Nothing special.

The 33. Surprised how much I liked this. Really good movie.

Saw and Saw2. Have no interest in horror at all. But watched these and have to say... enjoyed both. Good thriller parts especially the first.

The One I Love- 7.5/10

I've never watched Mad Men so I wasn't familiar much with her and Elizabeth Moss but her and Mark Duplass put on a two person show (well...sort of) in an interesting film about forgetting the past, moving on, and personal change. The mood, style,  and pace make for a good independent film.  Sort of a Donnie Darko meets Eternal Sunshine vibe.

Loved this one as well. and such a weird way for a movie to approach a story about a relationship.

Star Trek: Beyond

Bad guy is pretty generic, but the effects are awesome and the new hero lady is excellent.
enjoyed it fine. didn't love, but a decent watch.

it was my turn to take 9yo Jr to the movies, so Ghostbusters it was. he loooooved it. and in spite of myself, I enjoyed it- laughed a lot more than I thought I would.

Star Strek Beyond

The more it moved along and the plot revealed itself the more I enjoyed it.  It wasn't great, but I liked it.

I would have enjoyed it more if Bones didn't over act in every scene he was in, and if Scottie didn't refer to the Jaylah character as "Lassie" a million times.  It actually became a distraction.

It's also the first movie where Zoe Saldana started to look a little old.  Still perfectly hot.  But you know...the age thing is starting to happen.

3/5

Our Brand of Crisis

This movie missed the mark.  I watched it all the way through waiting for something to happen, but it just never did.

1/5

The 33

I wanted to like this movie more but I just didn't feel it. I didn't hate it.  I liked pieces of it.....like the ending...just remembering the thrill of their story when the men were pulled out alive.....I think they did a good job of portraying that.  It's really a remarkable story.  Not sure how they could have juiced up the story more but it was just a little too slow for my liking.

2.5/5

Nailed it. Every one of those were things I consciously observed too.

Also, that motorcycle was disrtactingly anachronistic.

I'm scared to see it.
I ain't scared of no ghosts.

eta: I'm not saying this is great or even good... but the 4 women were funny, and some of the writing was funny. solid cameos throughout too (loved seeing Jared from silicon valley in there).

Jared is hilarious.

Ever since I've been seeing movies with my son, I am much easier to please. So maybe I'll catch it at the cheap theater.

of for sure... unless your kid was dying to see it (like mine), I wouldn't pay much if anything to see it. felt like it was a decent airplane movie, where if you're stuck somewhere and it's free, you could do a lot worse.

The original Ghostbusters is cool, but I don't revere it the way many people in my generation tend to do.

So my chances of enjoying the reboot are higher than some.

tbh, I was in the exact same boat in regards to the original. and my expectations for this were nada.

Fargo

Just re-watched the FX series with Mrs. Dogg. I am begging...BEGGING you people to watch both seasons on DVD. This show is brilliant, and it's far better than most movies I've seen over the last 10 years. Just amazing.

Keep hearing that season 2 of Fargo was great, and worth watching even if people didn't dig the first season.  Heard similar things about The Leftovers too.

I loved both seasons. Mrs. Dogg thinks that season 2 was the best. Season 2 certainly is bigger and has more characters.

To be fair, I haven't seen more than the first episode or two of the first season.  Was interesting, but it didn't instantly pull me it.  Then I heard rumblings of people not loving it, and stopped.  Then I hear season 2 was fantastic, so it's sitting toward the top of my queue for shows to get to.

I really liked Season 1 and loved Season 2. You could actually watch season 2 before the first one because it takes place years before the first. I was talking to a friend about which order would be best because there are some fun differences if you watch it out of order but I think it would be better to watch the first one first.

But just watch it! It's awesome TV.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Didn't see a thread on this one, and don't remember anybody talking about it in here.  I had a blast with this movie.  I've talked about it in here, but I have never been the biggest fan of Dazed and Confused.  I don't hold it up on a pedestal of 90s movies, so maybe the so called "spiritual sequel" to D&C had a better shot with me to begin with.  Sure, it's a Linklater movie so you have all the philosophical musings on life sprinkled throughout the movie, but this was more just following one group of guys over the weekend before classes start.  This time it's the jocks we follow, but most of the personalities that are present in D&C are here too.  I wonder if it will rub people the wrong way since instead of having the variety of people to pick from and probably relate to for your "in", here we just get the the jocks drinking and trying to get some.  If you aren't on board with them, this movie could tire on you.  Long story short, I had a lot of fun and laughed quite a bit.  Comparisons aside, I would guess most in here would have a smile on their face during this movie.  7.5/10

Alright, I will get my hands on Fargo this week.  Any of you watch The Leftovers?  Usually dig HBO dramas, and loved the book/concept of this one, but haven't gotten around to that one either.

Love The Leftovers. Its a great show. It can get frustrating at times because they don't really explain anything. But its so dark. Great drama.

I only watched the first season. was up and down for me. at it's best (the episode with the claims adjuster woman?), it was absolutely stunning, upper elite top tier TV. but a lot of it was people doing things and leaving waaaaay too much unsaid that made no sense to me as anything actual people would do- those parts annoyed the crap out of me- and that was too much of the show. but it was really nicely acted and interesting from the sense of basic plot idea. worth the watch, but I had no problem ditching season two.

I think season 2 was the better of the two seasons, but I hear you.

I would be surprised if you made it through all of season 1 and didn't like it.

This describes my take almost exactly. Well made, but frustrating at times.

I would be disappointed if they tried to.  Not sure there would be a good explanation of what happened, I just liked the idea of seeing the aftermath and how everybody dealt with that type of thing.

What didn't you like about it?
I don't know, none of the performances or characters stood out to me (except maybe the old guy with the glasses), nothing memorable.  Most of the jokes (sit-up into butt prank) were repeats of stuff I saw at a funnier time.  Boring and unentertaining for me so I turned it off about 3/4ths through.  Soundtrack was pretty good though.

That says a lot right there.

This did come off a little bit like a Linklater's version of the Porky's-like movies of the 80s.  Still surprised you or others didn't have fun with it, but different strokes and all.

Star Trek Beyond - 3/5

This is my least favorite of the new Star Trek movies. Not horrible though.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Yeah, I really disliked this movie.  Sets the stage early for what you are in for with some ##### fart humor and some ridiculous Pringles product placement.  If you can get through the early stages and are still having an OK time, I think you will be good.  Long story short, I think movies like this are the worst kind of reboot - so focused on hitting all the beats and lines of the first one and getting all the weird cameos in, it never has time to become it's own movie or let the women do their own thing.  I won't deny laughing a few times, but it was mostly at Thor, who they gave license to poke fun at himself and do something a little different.   I would say hold out until it's on HBO or something if you must watch it.

the new "Ghostbusters" is something of a disappointment for me as well. it's not that the performances are bad but the writing is spectacularly is. i lay blame for this miscalculation at the feet of the director, Feig. it was amusing at best but mostly it seemed to lack the flow of the first/original. just a wasted opportunity. it made me appreciate just how good the original was as a film, much less a comedic one. i have a greater appreciation for Ivan Reitman now.

Yeah, the writing was bad, and like I said, I think it had a lot to do with feeling like they had to fit in so many references to the original that it didn't have a voice of it's own.  Also a big thing was there was really no ramping up or build up like the first one.  Just no stakes involved.  They also did nothing different or interesting with it being women in the role - hell, they even had to have the black woman the throw in that doesn't do anything just like the original (which is a complaint people have with the first one).  I  thought all the cameos were duds as well.

I haven't been following along this whole time, but is there a reason they didn't make if more on the lines of what Star Wars did - have the old characters, pass the torch, have the nods to the original while setting up it's own story line?  Why couldn't one of them be an estranged daughter of or a student of one of the old guys?
