Amores Perros-

Oh I know a little Spanish, looks like this movie is something about loving dogs- that sounds lovely.

:presses play:

Oh this is actually about about killing dogs and people and more dogs and more people. Basically the grimmest #### ever. Very good movie but it took 5 years off my life.
It’s a good movie but I couldn’t make it through. Too much cruelty.

Finally got around to Onward. Agree with most, not the best Disney and/or Pixar movie. My wife cried at the end.

As a father of two girls, Inside Out hit me a lot harder.

Been trying to get through a movie a day.  Mostly just stuff that I've seen before lately, but added an interesting handful into the Prime queue since I seem to prefer that sight a bit more and have better luck finding stuff.  Also have HBO add on, and after finding a good list online with suggestions, I added:

Southern Comfort, The Silence, To Catch a Thief, New Rose Hotel, The Salesman, Images, 8 1/2, Transsiberian, Nobody's Fool, Under the Silver Lake, Romeo is Bleeding, A Simple Favor, Moonstruck, Ghost in the Shell (anime), Honey Boy, For Sama, MI: Fallout, Die Hard 1-3, Alien and Aliens, Roman Holiday, Charade, Bone Tomahawk, Neon Demon, Bridge Too Far, African Queen, The Favourite, Frantic, Working Girl, Fast Colour, Stalag 17, Hamlet, The Farewell, and Polytechnique.

That should keep me occupied for a couple days.

Last few days was Hearts Beat Loud, which I already recommended, then I also watched The Town, Alien, and Out of Sight at the end of last week along with the movie club movies.

Another HEADS UP.

SHOWTIME is free for another week and they have a movie catalog of 418 flicks to scroll through.

I've already seen many of the top picks but here are a few we saw over the weekend that are fantastic.

The Impossible (2012)

Naomi Watts and a young Tom Holland are an amazing pairing.  This movie sucks you in and doesn't let go.  Very powerful images and emotions.

Green Book (2018)

Viggo is one of my favorite actors ever and he's so much fun in this film.  I had not heard of Mahershala Ali till this movie and he more than holds his own with Mortensen.  If you haven't seen this one yet then what are you waiting for?  Its free folks.

The Upside (2017)

Brian Cranston as a quadriplegic with Kevin Hart as his care taker.  It has comedic moments but its not a comedy.   Based on a true story, another emotional movie that is a must see.  Oh and ITS FREE!

It didn’t get any easier to deal with as the movie went on, I promise that
I was afraid of that.

Speaking of cruelty, though, I've been conducting a little Yorgos Lanthimos film fest the past week, watching The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Dogtooth.  Holy crap, are these tough watches.  The easiest was The Lobster, which I'd expect has been previously covered in the thread, and at least has comedic elements, albeit black, black, black.  Actually I found comedy in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, too, though I'm not sure if I was supposed to.  Both that and Dogtooth are really rough to watch, though.

His movies remind me in a way of Lars von Trier's.  So bleak, so cruel, and often with that same purposefully wooden acting style that von Trier seemed to cultivate.   von Trier's films seem to have had more an emotional impact on me, maybe by being less absurdist than Lanthimos's.

Lanthimos also directed but did not write The Favourite, which I haven't seen yet but appears much more mainstream, probably since he was not the writer.  I do recommend The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but only if you have a mental state that can withstand "extremely dark" right now.  I wish I'd waited for a less overall depressing time to watch.  I'm not sure if I recommend Dogtooth, but if you like the first two, it's worth a shot.  Also, Lanthimos clearly has an obsession with hair that rivals Quarantino's foot fetish.

The Lobster was weird- not sure I totally get it. I was more or less entertained but really not sure what point was. That has kind of turned me off to his movies and your post confirms that. However, if he does something "mainstream" again I would give it a shot because The Favourite was really good, super funny and interestingly made.

I was entertained, and I think I "got" it to the extent there was something to get.  It's certainly my favorite of the three I watched.  I want to watch The Favourite, but it's $14.99 on streaming, and I have a mental block to paying that much to stream.

Hearts Beat Loud

Really liked this one - it's on Hulu.   Just a nice father/daughter story with some good music and the connection of music with people.  It's PG-13 so probably pretty safe for a family movie night during quarantine.   Gotta love the Nick Offerman scowl.
I liked this movie and thought it would have offered another option as a companion piece to Leave No Trace for movie club - single fathers with good but overbearing relationships with their teenage daughters, daughters cutting their independent place in the world, etc.  LNT was a much more impactful movie for me, but this was a nice one and, like LNT, had two outstanding leads.

Rewatched a few classics:

Sideways-  “You don’t know my plight Miles.”

My Cousin Vinny-  Marisa Tomei deserved an Oscar for this.  It is an irresistible performance.  28 years ago.  Hard to believe.

Saw an interesting one last night.  Jesse Eisenberg with Alexander Skarsgård as brothers concocting a fantastical scheme to game Wallstreet.

  👉  >>   The Hummingbird Project (2018)

Skarsgård does a great job depicting someone well-on the spectrum with a shaved head where he falls far into his role.  He's really good in this one.

Eisenberg brings his manic intensity and I think he's one of the better actors of our time.

Interesting flick and worth the time.

I like that take.  I agree that it wasnt as good- just a nice family movie I think a lot of people will like.

i got it out of my liberry (speaking of which, have you gotten the kanopy.com - the nationwide liberry streaming service - KP's always talking about?) just before the shutdown and it was rollicking good fun. of course, i'm a freak for period pieces where everyone is as venal & silly as today and dont talk like it's English class. the staging & performances were as good as one could hope to see. a solid 9

Not a bad film imo

We watched the new Trolls movie.

It was a new Trolls movie.
Not ashamed to admit I kind of liked it.

I liked the whole premise of the different musical styles doing battle. The smooth jazz troll needed more screen time
My kids liked it, so that's the important part.

Agree about smooth jazz...best part of the movie. Also could've been more yodelling. Also...I can't believe I just wrote that last sentence.

Been waiting for it, but Angel has Fallen is finally on Netflix.

I am sure I'll get mocked, but I love the Fallen movies. All of them. I hope they make 100 more. Gerard Butler is awesome.
I can recognize that these are terrible, and yet still enjoy the hell out of them
We watched this the other night.

Bang bang boom boom.

So stupid. And yet....bang bang boom boom fun enough.

all of these have the same improbable issue where huge teams of evil doers are able to move in and around the president with impunity.

All 3 are definitely   movies..
I'd give the first one 4 out of 5 for what it is.. very entertaining popcorn movie...Second movie, while still fun, wasn't quite as enjoyable.. 3 out of 5..

The 3rd one..... 1 out of 5.. I dislike movies that go where this one did..

Here is a guy that risked his life for his country...TWICE.... but now is going to take out a president for money?   ARRRGGGHHHHHHH

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.. after the last one, not sure I'm on the edge of my seat waiting...

Let me guess... Next one will be control a virus outbreak...   :oldunsure:
I would like to have one that incorporates the universe of Geostorm and shows that the characters are actually twins. So it would be a companion movie where we see him as the secret service agent during the events of Geostorm. Call it The Sky Has Fallen.

The second one would be Air Force One Crashes. Much like Escape from New York but it crashes somewhere in the Middle East. Also a nuclear warhead is in the air. Call it The Hammer Has Fallen.

The third would be a remake of 2012 from the perspective of a retired Secret Service director. Call it Man Has Fallen.

Hollywood, you may send the check made out to cash.

Have you seen The Lobster?  I'd be curious about your thoughts on it.  I watched it free on Netflix, I think, if that's an option.

ETA:  Have not done kanopy - need to look into!

yes, a few yrs ago. dont remember it that well - believe i liked the attempt but not the result. too willfully weird. people think i should like those kind of flix a lot more than i do, but i'm hard to move off my own odd constructs

Stranger Than Fiction

Havent seen this movie in a long time, but I’ve always appreciated its thought-provoking premise. I got to see it again today and was quite pleased. 4/5

Here’s what I’ve watched recently using the corona ratings system assuming you can see emojis:

Parasite - 🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠 - you need to see this. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Jojo Rabbit - 🦠🦠🦠🦠.5 - would have been my favorite movie of the last year if not for parasite.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor - 🦠🦠🦠🦠 - feel good Mister Rogers movie. Tom Hanks is awesome as you’d expect.

1917 - 🦠🦠🦠🦠 - little thin plot but amazing cinematography, feels like you are in the middle of the war. I want to watch it again just to catch it all. Incredibly shot.

Invisible Man - 🦠🦠🦠 - stupid scare movie that was fun but had plot holes you could drive a trailer truck through.

Ford v Ferrari - 🦠🦠🦠🦠 - great story and I’m a sucker for any period piece from the 60s.

The Lighthouse - 🦠🦠🦠🦠.5 - I think I saw this pre-corona and it is absolutely terrifying. Shot in black and white and a smaller aspect rate so it really puts you in the turn of the century time period. Lot to discuss with this one if anybody has seen it.
Good call Cappy. Just watched The Lighthouse. What a crazy film (in a good way). Really enjoyed it and worth seeing. I recommend it. 4/5

wikkid's 'de-stress from covfefe19' special

The best documentary Turner Classic Movies has ever made, Harold and Lillian, a Hollywood Love Story, is on TCM at 8:00 tonite. One a storyboarder, the other a researcher, for decades this couple had a subtle but profound effect on some of the best movies and moviemakers of all time. If you wanna get lost in love for all things cinema, wikkid say check it.

Gave Mr krista the option of Portrait of a Lady on Fire or The Lighthouse last night; he chose the latter.  Still hoping to get to the former soon, KP.  The Lighthouse was terrifying.  Willem Dafoe and the other guy both outstanding.

Still a great movie though.  I am still processing that one and watch to try another watching soon.

"the other guy"??!!  Give Edward Cullen his props, dammit!

:lmao:   I don't know the guy, but he gave Dafoe a run for his money in the performances.  I'm still processing the movie too, and probably will be for a while.

I watched this last night as well. I enjoyed it but I have to admit I am not sure I understood it. I really dug the atmosphere. I had just finished reading a short story by Richard Chizmar that took place in a lighthouse as well so that was kind of cool. I agree the acting was very good. I just wish I understood it better. Everytime I thought I got it, I am pretty sure I didn't. :bag:

I wil be interested in your take of Portrait. I did not like it as much as KP. I have recommended it to others who I think will like it though.
