Understand completely.   Did you listen to the Big Picture Oscar episode?   They were talking about their picks and thoughts, and I believe they said they were expecting Mank to get shut out.   It will be interesting and is an odd Oscars for sure, hopefully I get back on track and watch most of these nominees.
I am sure it will. Screenplay seemed like it's best shot. Maybe it will get a costume or production design. It seems to be almost in the Trial of the Chicago 7 category where a lot of people thought it was straight up terrible or just really boring. Sean and I might be the only 2 people who loved it.

Getting ready for Kong vs Godzilla. Last night I watched Kong Skull Island. I am pretty forgetful but I could have sworn I did not like this movie when I first saw it. I really enjoyed it last night. Tonight will be Godzilla King of Monsters.

Thinking of going to the Imax for Kong vs Godzilla. I have not been in a theater in over a year. I think the latest Star Wars flick was the last time I was in a theater. That was 12/2019?
I rewatched Skull Island yesterday and liked it too. I'm glad I did as I missed the after credits scene the first time.

I'm seeing Godzilla vs Kong in the theater too. Last thing I saw was Endgame.

Saw Nobody on Saturday, some great cheesy lines and lots of pointless violence. Highly enjoyed it on a Saturday afternoon. Looking forward to Zilla v Kong tomorrow

My current 2020 (and a little 2021 as I am following the extended award season calendar) rankings

  1. Mank
  2. Another Round
  3. One Night in Miami
  4. Judas and the Black Messiah
  5. Small Axe
  6. Nomadland
  7. Da 5 Bloods
  8. Palm Springs
  9. First Cow
  10. David Lynch's American Utopia
  11. Pieces of a Woman
  12. Sound of Metal
  13. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
  14. Borat 2
  15. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
  16. Happiest Season
  17. WW1984
Can you just exclude this all together?

if anything sounds like a plot outline for a David Lynch movie, its:

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Water dissolving and water removing

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

You may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
You may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself
"My God! What have I done?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

Letting the days go by

And here the twister comes
Here comes the twister

Totally worth the watch!!!!!   I did miss a part of the plot cause I had a work call - so I'll go back to clear up something but overall I really enjoyed monsters fighting....

Yes there are some things that "don't fit " the plot but its monsters fighting.   I think I missed the last godzilla movie so that may be why I missed something.

I watched The Last Vermeer last night and thought it was very good. It's based on real events in Amsterdam at the end of WWII. Claus Bang and Guy Pearce head the excellent cast.

Godzilla vs. Kong was a fun 2 hours.. Directors finally getting right to the real stars and not wasting much time getting to the battles.

Heck, even my wife who rarely likes action movies, said afterwards "Well, That was fun!"

Has "Another Round" been discussed yet? It's so so so good.

1. Mads Mikelson should be such a big star, he is incredible has such charisma

2. Really happy seeing the director here get an Oscar nomination

3. The best ending I've seen since Once Upon Time in Hollywood, so great

It's on Hulu if interested. A Danish movie about 4 middle aged HS teachers who decide to try and stay a little drunk all the time (ok so you can see why I like this so much lol)
I was able to see this as well the other night and really enjoyed it despite it being subtitled. Also thought It was a nice touch by the director to give Mads a brief scene showcasing his other skill as a professional dancer.

Definitely felt like that part and really the whole movie was written for Mads.

The New York ripper

So for some reason I'm rewatching this movie, and I've decided that Lucio Fulci is a complete mysogynist piece of s***. Avoid at all costs even if you like horror movies.

Having just rewatched the original Twin Peaks series, I decided to rewatch Fire Walk With Me. I say this as a Lynch fanboy, but this guy makes terrible movies sometimes.

Not sure I love that Kong vs Godzilla is about a likable conspiracy theory podcaster who bathes in bleach and doesn't drink tap water and is tracking down a corporate plot against humanity with the help of a couple teens.

I had a blast with Kong and liked Godzilla for what it is, but I really couldn't get into GvK.   The ensemble cast wasn't as strong, and like somebody said in the other thread - the people sucked and they put too much of this #### in and bogged down the movie.   I knew I was in a little trouble with the movie from jump when all of a sudden there is a force field around Skull Island, they have some kid communicating with Kong, and we have this dip#### podcaster.    It doesn't have to be that hard, just do what Skull Island did - hey, the Earth is hollow, there are big ### monsters living there, and..... go!

It looks and sounds incredible so I wanted to watch just to see it with the new TV and surround sound system but yeah the movie is pretty meh. The video game looking monster fights just don't do it for me.

Watched The Father last night.

Anthony Hopkins does an impressive realistic performance as a man struggling and coping with elderly life while dealing with having dementia.

Watched 2 more WKW movies this week. Really love the style and I can see why he broke through in the West in the 90s. His movies scream music video generation. He probably hit the peak of that style. It manages to feel familiar and yet unique, dated but still cool. I am not sure anyone has gotten it quite as right as WKW.

Chunking Express and Fallen Angels- sounds like they were really meant to be viewed as 1 movie. The connection is obvious. Visually they have some differences but the plot structure is really similar with separate stories happening only connected by a passing moment in the city. I mentioned La Ronde in my review of Days of Being Wild. WKW seems to be attached to that approach, Putting these 2 films together and it again feels like a modern Hong Kong version of La Ronde.  Around the city we go looking on people in love, out of love but always longing.

Visuals, needle drops, narratives that aren't driven but simply float through time and space.

Cool.

Can't tell if you liked it or not.

I am hoping Minari, Promising Young Woman and The Father end up free on a streamer before too long.
All 3 are available for free streaming on the so called "other" web sites that are frowned upon.

Viewed Minari last night and you can put me in the the meh category. The acting and cinematography were both very good but felt like it just kind of meandered around and then just ended after a couple of hours without much of the main story line remaining unresolved.

Hmmm.  Does that put you in the Minarity of people who didn't love the movie?

:bag:

Nobody - Just saw this at the theater. It was fun. It wasn't an amazing movie - but it was quite entertaining. A little bit of humor. Just a fun time overall.

Who knew Bob Odenkirk could be an action star?

Pedro Almodovar was a kinky dude. Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom is wild. Post Franco Punk Rock Madrid story of a woman who is disappointed her husband doesn't give her the rough sex she wants so she ends up going with a bunch sexually open punk rock women. How is that for a plot.

I hope I don't have any Spanish speaking neighbors. My windows are open while lines like "I've seen you being slapped and eating snot without turning a hair" are being thrown around in this.
