my last true bonzo friend - pissed off his bride by riffin' on their vows, would run on the field @ Isotopes games if you promised to bail him out - that was his favorite flick. he'd quote it in life situations like folks do Seinfeld or Godfather. so i mentioned it when someone wanted Neo-noir recommendations. it really is good but it isnt really good
It’s not high art but I was entertained for every second and I was surprised by the directions it went. I wasn’t expecting so much commentary on the war on drugs, corrupt cops, etc

There's an artsy movie theater I love near where I used to live, and even though it's 50 minutes away now, and it was closed for about 18 months, I've kept up my membership up to support them.  In addition to a couple of regular screens, they also have a special space above the restaurant next door, where the theater is just a bunch of comfy antique couches and chairs, and you can order from the restaurant downstairs and get it delivered up.  Just my favorite place by far to see a movie.

A couple of weeks ago they had a special sneak-preview for members of the documentary "Julia" as their grand re-opening of this part of the theater.  Even though I wasn't dying to see the movie, we went just because it was such a pleasure to be able to go there again.  And thank goodness I saw the film there, because it...wasn't good.  Julia Child was such an interesting person, and nearly none of that came through in the movie.  It was just a linear retelling of her life, no diving deep, no focus on the challenges she faced in her career.  Somehow it made her seem fairly ordinary.  There was a lot about her relationship with her husband, which was kind of interesting because they seemed to be one of those couples who absolutely adored each other every moment, but really shouldn't have been the focus of the movie.  Surprised to find these were the same people who put together RBG, a far superior film.

Julie and Julia .....

Not Fade Away - David Chase movie. It’s not bad, Gandolfini is just incredible though, playing basically a middle class Tony Soprano.

I was so thrilled to see him basically playing Tony again, but then it made me sad he’s gone. See it if you’re a fan.

Rewatched a couple with the wife that I remember loving - Palm Springs and Booksmart.    Both were as good as I remembered.     The Barbie and stuffed panda scenes in Booksmart brought tears to both our eyes laughing.

Probably 2 of my top 3 or 4 comedies of the last few years

Palm Springs was surprisingly good and not at all what I expected

Watched Jagged last night.... its "Part 2" of the HBO Music Docs.... The Woodstock 99 was the first.

I knew Alanis was big but I didn't realize how big she was.  Enjoyed it

So apparently Alanis did not like the way the documentary came out but I'm trying to see what is really wrong with it I thought it was well done

Caught The Frozen Ground recently on Netflix.

Based on real events.  I used to live up in Alaska where this took place so I really loved the second camera work of the lush gorgeous interspersed scenes or mountains, glaciers, rivers, etc.  Have been to many of the places mentioned but wasn't familiar with the true story as this took place about a decade before I lived there.

Good pacing and solid story.  I wasn't sure what to expect since this is a bit older and I hadn't heard of the movie or of the events that it is based on but it is a good watch.

Figured thanksgiving night was as good as any to revisit a 3 hour film about life, family, relationships.

Yi-Yi is such a masterpiece. How to make such a sprawling and somewhat plotless movie work so well is incredible. It grabs you so quickly and you instantly get every character. He’s pulling a lot from Ozu but to me it’s leaps ahead. I love the tone too- sad but always life affirming.

Why are we afraid of the first time? Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice. We're never afraid of getting up every morning. Why?

Love this movie. Top 5 for me.

When I watched it in the theater, I kept expect the melodrama to turn... more melodramatic or maudlin. Never did. Kept zagging when I expected a zig, and always towards much better ways than I could imagine. Just an amazing movie.

Yep, so restrained. Such small things have such a large impact like the trash being left out, the flower finally blooming, the explanation for the pictures the boy takes. They far overshadow the more dramatic moments.

Liked 8-Bit Christmas on HBO well enough. Good combo of nostalgia, Nintendo and the 80s if you’re into that. Basically a rip-off of Christmas Story but it was fun.

Rewatched Paris is Burning on the plane. Haven't seen it since it came out tin the theaters, so not sure if it had been edited down or not, but still just amazing. Such a well done doc to put in a time and place most of us knew little to none about back then. And incredible to see how far we've come in 30 years...and how far we have to go.

also caught Midway, which was marginally better than I expected, but still not good enough to warrant the remake in the first place IMO.
