Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (15 Viewers)

I haven't really watched a lot of movies over the past few years, so I decided to start catching up on some over the next few months.

Coherence - A group of pretentious unlikeables gather for a dinner party on the night of a passing comet. They all immediately freak out and overreact when the lights go out but things do get weird and give them a reason to freak out even more. Great premise with some tense moments but overall kind of a mess. 2.5/5

Pig - Man loves pig. Man losses pig. Man looks for pig. In between there's a weird Fight Club, a Michelin star restaurant where the patrons don't even notice a bloody and filthy homeless man and a d-bag Adam Arkin. Nic Cage is excellent but he should look for a truffle dog. 3/5

Arrival - Giant bean shaped spaceships show up all over the world. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner have to figure out what's up before the rest of the humans do what humans do and blow them all up. Excellent visuals, interesting overall concept and good performances all around. 3.5/5

Martyrs - Well that was lovely. Blood, guts, torture and everything else I expected. Starts right in and never lets up but there is an actual storyline and interesting premise. I wasn't paying attention to the time and thought it was over, thinking "that was it?" but I was very wrong. Hard to watch and one I will never watch again but it wasn't just torture porn. 3/5

 
I can’t believe I’m sitting here saying Pig was better than 3 stars. It was though. An interesting spin on the revenge genre and actually leaves one with something to think about.

I was actually being a little generous, imo. Without giving anything away since it's so new, I found it to be unrealistic at times and overall emotionless. And I didn't care for the kid playing against him and it was actually hard to root for Cage too.

I will say that I will get to it sooner than later, but I do kind of wish I hadn't watched the trailer for Miller's Crossing last night.   

Wife got home late last night, I was actually going to put on MC, but it wasn't streaming anymore so instead I rolled out The Hunt for Red October b/c it was 1990 and it was in 4K.    If she is late again tonight, it might just be a Days of Thunder night.  :popcorn:

@jamny - just out of curiosity for perspective, what the last couple movies you've seen that were 4+/5?

Martyrs is one that I have been trying to convince myself to rewatch.   Not sure if I can think of a movie more brutal to watch, but I remember really liking it and being surprised at what the plot was.   Sets the tone immediately with a shotgun blast if I remember right.

 I had Red October on vhs and would rewind the last 5 minutes over and over to listen to the Hymn of red october.

I haven't seen a 5 star movie in a long time but those that are up there that I've seen over the past few years would be:

Room, Whiplash, Gone Girl, Prisoners, The Revenant,  Wind River, Lincoln, Hell or High Water, Sicario

I'm kinda behind on more newer movies as I've been watching more TV shows.

In two weeks, KP will be posting stuff like how he's down to only a few movies released from 1990 that he has not seen yet, including Miller's Crossing, and then next post will be that he just fired Look Who's Talking Too or something.

Sounds like me.   Didn't get to Miller's Crossing, Close-Up, etc..   but knocked out Kindergarten Cop, Tremors, and Gremlins 2.   On to 1991!!

Mostly a handful of posters in the PSF using it to laugh at every post without a retort is my understanding.   Now it's descended into an immature argument over who is hitting the report button over an emoji.

 It's no Days of Thunder, that's for damn sure.  ;) Plus, the purchase was one whole dollar more than the rental, so I lived on the edge and took the risk I'd like it enough to watch again.   

 
I still need to finish it tonight (Thursday night is Wheel of Time night for a short time, so when the wife got home we watched that).    I will say that so far I have a similar feeling to MC as Andy does to NCFOM.    My wheels were also spinning a bit after I was thinking about as to why certain directors click with people - ie Andy's comment yesterday about not liking many Scorsese movies or something like that.   I used to say that I didn't like the Coen comedy movies, and really liked their dramas.   Now after rewatching Fargo again recently, I was thinking about how true that 2nd part even is.

I watched the “The Red Shoes” tonight. It is probably just a small segment that love the film and/or Powell & Pressburger, as well as still buy physical media, but, for anyone else falling in that camp, the restoration on the Criterion UHD disc is incredible, and I’m happy with the purchase. The cinematography and color both really pop. For a film released in 1948, it does not look that old.

Movie-wise, its got the themes of art and life, packed into a visual feast. Probably not for everyone, but I’ll agree with Scorsese that some of cinema at its finest.
