Clearing the palate between Shakespeare films, HBO+ has Breaker Morant as part of their TCM shard. I had never seen it before. I'm not really a huge fan of the military courtroom drama sub genre. This is a really good film. Given that it's a period piece, it also aged well, it seems of its time rather than a movie that was produced in 1980. I don't know that I'd have made the same choice Morant did at the end, but that's probably part of what makes the story compelling. 

That is awesome you liked it. I did as well. It was totally new to me but one of the FBGs in the COVID summer movie draft took it for court room. I sought it out after that. I really liked it. How would you rank it among court room movies?  Are there others from that genre you really like or dislike?

I dig it. When we were doing those This versus That movies a couple years ago, I thought this would be an interesting one to go up against Paths of Glory.

Pretty good first half, bad second half.

I will be honest - I wasn't into it from the jump, but IMO it really goes south in the 2nd half when it gets "romantic".   I think it would have been way better if it didn't have that, and it was just about different people connecting with each other and breaking down some of their walls.  It felt about 30mins too long to me, but I am sure that's a bit to do with my level of enjoyment with the movie.  

My main question to my wife was WTF couldn't Cuba Gooding help his friend?  

The reason I was thinking of Maguire is I had this vague feeling of a formula for these movies where they have 2-3 great moments/memorable lines + cute X (kid for one, dog for the other).   Both I dislike, and both I dislike the romantic relationship at the end and basically feel bad for the woman.

Being the Ricardos was a big nothing. It was fun watching everyone do their impressions but that can’t carry a 2 plus hour movie. It tried to be about major issues like communism, blacklist, the strict standards of the time, fidelity, etc. In the end it took no stands and had nothing to say about those issues (other than maybe thank goodness for the FBI and Hoover). It comes off like it was a leftover screenplay for a CBS miniseries circa 2000. Worst of all, it makes I Love Lucy and especially Lucille Ball come off as not funny.

Wasn't Jack famous for dating/bedding women half his age throughout his life? That's the most believable part of the movie for me.

You want to see good acting, check out Leo in his new movie. He has to play a character that is actually interested in women his own age. We know that was a big stretch for Leo.

Jack in real life?  I have no idea, but he could be more charming than the character he was portraying in this movie.  That person had zero redeeming qualities.  I agree that Helen Hunt being with him was way beyond believable.  That said, I really liked this movie, apparently more than most people here.  Greg Kinnear made it for me, though.  Still don't get how that guy didn't end up with a movie career.

  And maybe it was close to his IRL personality.  I suppose it could be, but even so, I’d think there’s a difference between charming an aspiring actress when you’re (at the time) one of the most acclaimed actors in the world, vs charming a normal person when you’re..whatever he was.

He was a best selling author. Not as glamorous as actor but it's got some appeal.

LOL fair point but also Hunt was just a 30 something waitress at a mediocre NY lunch spot trying to support a kid on her own. This wasn't Kate Moss.

In real life, people's actions do not make sense. The people that we fall for are often totally wrong for us . People don't always develop and grow. Most people just keep repeating the same mistakes. Why criticize a story/movie/ book/show for characters not behaving logically or not showing growth?

The wife will be watching and I don't think it's a foreign type of night.    We just watched Muriel's Wedding a bit ago.   No Beautiful Girls streaming,  so maybe I'll just have her pick between 10 Things and While you were Sleeping unless other suggestions show up in the next 30mins.     I had thought of Wedding Singer or Chasing Amy, but we've seen them a ton.

These are great points.    I think it just comes down to a romance or rom/com for me to really click I at least want to mildly be cheering for something to happen with the people involved.    Some of my favorites are with people that aren't right for each other, or maybe even the couple doesn't even end up together.  But like I said, at the end of that movie I actually just felt bad for Helen Hunt ending up with that crotchety old ####.   

I am guessing there aren't many examples out there of the opposite - nice, kind man falls for woman with few redeeming qualities?

I think I was dating a girl on the pom team in 2000 and we saw a lot of movies but no way she would have watched a movie about cheerleaders. She was pretty psycho about the difference between cheer and pom.

Whoa! nice pull. I remember going to see this one in the theater with my mom.   I will for sure add that to list and watch that in the next week.  Pretty sure that was the only time I've seen that one.

1. About 900 kids, private Catholic School 

2. There was also JV pom and Freshman pom. Our pom team was ranked top 5 in the State every year. It was a big thing. We were like the Yankees. 

3. I  don't know technically but the cheer team worked the sidelines of football games, doing cheers and pyramids, etc. The pom team would never perform outdoors. They were more like a dance squad. No tossing and pyramids, most choreographed dancing- with poms and only at half time. At least that is what I remember from 20+ years ago.

 I Support you standing up for As Good As It Gets. Really enjoyed the film. Won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress. Kinnear was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost out to Robin Williams ( Good Will Hunting). I would have voted for Kinnear.

I enjoyed Crossing Delancey (1988). Peter Riegert was good here. 

BBC Pride and Prejudice (1995) 6 part series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is so good. Lighter on the comedy and heavier on the romance. Very well acted.

Also another old man, young woman rom/com is Murphy's Romance (1985) with James Garner and Sally Field. Its enjoyable.
