I'd also recommend District B-13 (available on Kanopy). It's basically the French version of The Raid: Redemption. Who cares what language they're speaking? The action speaks for itself.

 
What was the point of making west side story a scene for scene remake of the original? Not sure what I was expecting but it’s weird to just watch all the same dance numbers again. 

 
I watched Old Henry last night and it was very good.

It developed it's story carefully but was never boring or felt padded.

It had elements that reminded me of Open Range and that's a really good thing.

I think Ansel is really weak  and Rita Moreno was fantastic in the original but other than those this cast is superior. The Puerto Ricans actually feel Puerto Rican.  It strengthens some of the key background characters, especially Chino. Some of the songs are better used in service of the story, especially Cool. It has a real sense of danger and violence that I don't think the original had. It adds themes like gentrification and the idea that this whole area is going get torn down to create the Lincoln Center anyway, the economic pressure is highlighted, etc. It's a little long on the back end but it's an incredible achievement. Few movies look and sound this good. I just wish they got an actor with some charisma for Tony.

I will elaborate more on the Scream watch.   Honestly, it might me my least favorite of the series.   All the others I felt had a least a little more organic progression of the story or ideas from the first.  This one is 100% just that sequel/reboot that tend to grate on me because it's more just hitting those nostalgia buttons of the original and less that they had an idea brewing for a good sequel.    

My "too old" comment was because the kids were annoying, I was rolling my eyes a bit at the tech (door securities, texting instead of talking in the cold open, etc..), and Courtney Cox is looking grandmotherly.   A LOT bloodier too, but that's not a deal breaker for me it's just the step up of gore is really noticeable.  

 
Over the last week the wife and I started the Hitchcock 4K boxset I bought a bit ago.   I watched Rear Window a few nights ago and she really liked that one, and we talked about it.   I asked how Vertigo was, and she said "yeah, that was a bit darker of a movie".     Next up is Psycho and The Birds is #4.  Not sure I've seen The Birds more than once many years ago, so I've been curious about that one.

Good thing you didn't do it in reverse order. You might not have gotten to the other three. I really don't like The Birds.

I last saw Birds in grad-school... a prof had my studio break into teams and dissect a scene, visually/architecturally (we did the seagulls at the diner/town/phone-booth scene. god, grad school was dumb/fun.

but The Birds REALLY didn't hold up. while I did gain some appreciation for the scene/visual structure with the above exercise... and there are some iconic scenes in it (I always think of the kids in school singing, cutting to the jungle-gym in the yard as it ever so slowly fills up with birds)... but the movie is just dumb. 

 
Here, XFINITY is having free movie week.  Now I have seen a lot of what I have wanted to see but highly recommend Old Henry (as noted above) and the Kid Detective (not a kid's movie)

you're pretty spot on in your assessments here - the original is bulletproof, this was an exceedingly unnecessary exercise.

But you watched TCM 9 or whatever it was?    Or am I thinking of somebody else that watched the new Texas Chainsaw.    

Or do you just hate the Scream movies in general?

oh, i watched it (TCM '22) ... yes. 

my review is in here, maybe a page or two back. 

i reviewed it because i revere the OG, and i had a free night. 

i thought the OG Scream was a very slick flick, but the new one isn't worth the time to review, other than what i already offered. 

 
The other night we watched Dial M for Murder.   I dig the flick, but when I asked my wife about it she said that it's hard now because she like Rear Window so much the others have not been living up to that one.  Fair, as that's my favorite.  I guess I should have gone in reverse order.  :lol:

I have the 3D blu-ray of that one. Just wish 3D TVs were still a thing…

 
I watched a bit of The Fugitive the other night...still a fun ride. 

One thing stood out in a funny way- Tommy Lee Jones murders a dude in cold blood, and later starts unloading his pistol in the middle of a hospital shooting at Harrison Ford.

That’s funny. Older movies in the 40s are even crazier. Cops will just start shooting wildly no matter how many bystanders are around. They will also murder any suspect who attempts to run. They are also absolute crack shots and can hit a man on the run from a 4th floor window 200 yards away with a pistol.

The Tourist, Our Flag Means Death, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers (HBO Max)

 
I watched Drive My Car this weekend. Available on HBO Max now. Pretty good character study, for anyone into that, hitting themes like loss and regret. It is nearly 3 hours long, but it did not feel like that long, even though it is a bit more ponderous  than most movies, and most of the movie centers around staging a production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (and long car rides). One of those movies to grab a slow-sipping cocktail, put down your phone, and let it wash over you.

Same here. It was good but I was a little underwhelmed given all the hype around it. I did feel it was kind of slow. Definitely a movie that needs to wash over you, there is minimal plot. Lots of philosophy. 

 
The other new movies I saw this weekend were pretty wild, both on Hulu

Benedetta: Paul Verhoeven’s lesbian nun (based on a true) story. That’s kind of selling it short. It’s also about power and control. Essentially a young girl is entered into a convent where she believes Jesus speaks to her. The people in the convent don’t believe her but they find it financially advantageous to play along…until the power dynamics shift. 
 

Titane: Body horror (which isn’t my thing) about a young woman who has sex with cars and kills men. It wasn’t my thing but I can see where the hype is coming from. It has a lot of really massive fans and won the top prize at Cannes.

Yeah, at the end of the day, I’m okay with it getting a Best Picture nomination, but I don’t feel the same about it as I did about something like Parasite, when it won as an international film.

For international feature, the only other one I’ve seen is Flee — I have a preference for Flee, but I doubt they give it to an animated documentary.

Yeah it’s definitely not Parasite in quality or mass appeal. It’s closer to an Antonioni 60s movie. Very quiet, very contemplative. 
 

I am almost through all the movies or 2021 that I want to see. The only ones remaining are:

Quo Vadis Aida? (On Hulu so I’ll see it soon)

Bergman Island (also on Hulu)

Worst Person in the World

Red Rocket

The Green Knight 

C’mon C’mon

Parallel Mothers

I saw Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway recently, so decided to watch it on the plane the other day. The movie version wasnt as bad as I'd heard...but casting the original mid30s lead to to play a HS senior was pretty wrong and distracting. He looked as old as the parents. Pretty great on stage, just ok on film.

Saw this one pop up for rental option now.   I think I will watch Licorice Pizza on my day off tomorrow, and thought about renting this one as well .
