Not Targets but saw Paper Moon as a kid and What's Up Doc in the theatre as a kid and loved them both but think Last Picture Show is amazing.

Targets isn’t nearly as good as the other 3 but for a low budget movie it’s really well done. It’s also quite clever because Roger Corman told Bogdanovich he had the rights to this other Boris Karloff movie and Karloff owed him 2 days work. Corman said Bogdanovich could make anything he wanted as long as it cost less than $150,000, featured 2 days of work from Karloff and incorporated the Karloff movie that he had the rights to. What he came up with was a dual narrative film about an aging horror movie star disillusioned with his career and a Charles Whitman like young man who is headed towards a path of random violence.

And you say it wasn't that good?

I believe you.

Woof, lol.
I said not as good as What’s Up Doc, The Last Picture Show or Paper Moon (high bar)  It’s a good movie though. Sam Fuller helped write the script, the great Laszlo Kovacs filmed it, Polly Platt did like 20 different jobs on it. It’s an incredible feat when you think of the challenge presented to a first time movie maker.

I know, I know.  Storyline has meat but I was referring to production values available to that budget.

Made me think of THIS:

Bowfinger - Every Movie Costs 2,184 Dollars

It's the zeitgeist... Just nails it. I knew every one of those kids and teachers and songs and outfits and haircuts and....on and on.
I went to HS in the late 90s and while the looks/style changed, the general behavior and attitudes hadn’t changed much.

IIRC, this took place in 1976? I was younger- HS 82-86.. and grew up in NCal- but all of those kids, parents, types of kids, types of activities, types of places... all the same (with subtle regional changes).

same…also found all of the characters extremely relatable, especially since I didn’t hang exclusively with any one group
I think I liked it a slight tick more than what my memory had it at, but I still don't overall really like the movie, despite loving so many people in front of and behind the camera.   One of the things that I liked and thought held up well is the aspect that Dan brought up that a lot of the characters blended and flowed between groups.  There was the hazing, but overall there wasn't the jocks/stoners/nerds groups that you see so much in movies and that was refreshing.   That said, I think it's the hazing plotline that I don't like in the movie and how much it's focused on that.   Maybe it's me dealing with bullies in school and being a parent now that has me bringing too much baggage to the movie to enjoy it.

The Green Knight

Yeah, A24 movies just aren't for me. Although this was better than the dreadful Midsommar.

I think would have liked it more had I gone into it with knowledge of the five knightly virtues. Caution: that link has major spoilers.

It did finish well, though. It was just a pretty tough slog getting there.
I just saw this comment, and no surprise that I feel the opposite.    I generally am pretty impressed with what they choose to back and put out, and can't remember too many of theirs that I have not liked for some reason or another.

If I remember right all or most are on Kanopy, and I keep meaning to go through the ones that I haven't seen.

I just scanned their list and thought of one I didn't like - A Ghost Story.    Very high hit rate for me though so far and some of what I would consider top movies of their genres in recent years like Ex Machina, Hereditary, The VVitch, Moonlight, Ladybird, etc..

I assume you mean the groups were better done and more realistically liquid and not black/white stereotypes? because the movie is almost entirely about those exact groups.

They have those groups, but characters blend a bit more than in typical movies, especially Pink as he interacts with the jocks, stoners, and creepy dudes long graduated.   Or I'm just talking out my ### and trying to hard to list a positive.

no- you're talking through your forward regions. and it's absolutely a positive about the movie.

pink is a jock- "is that arm of yours ready to throw for 3000 yards next season?"... starting QB. but he hangs out with the journalism nerds "lincoln beard" as well as the stoners.

the movie covers pretty much every kid group there was in HS... and does it brilliantly. even the parents- the ones that bail on going away for the weekend so they can stay home and bust the party... they WERE my gb greg's parents "dawn/don". vietnam vet teacher... check. hippy women's rights social studies teacher... check. dirtbag flunkee football player on a power trip... check. "greaser" tough guy looking to do things, but all out of beer... check. popular hot girl also on power trip...check. naive but 8th grade kids following along with almost any suggestion from upperclassmen... god... I could just go on and on. we didn't have paddles or Jrs seeking out 8th graders for hazing, but 9th graders got dumped in trashcans, sold elevator tickets (2 story buildings at my HS) and sent on errands deep into the hinterlands. even the place they play pool and foosball... christ... just swap in FreeBird and that was where I hung out... or tried to hang out if the older kids let me.

Dazed and Confused is a movie about teens that isn't a teen movie. It's more college fare. My friends used to drink and watch it all the time. I don't remember why.

I do remember really liking the movie. It's a time period piece for me, though, because unlike our intrepid cub experiencer Flop, things had changed so much by '88-'92 that I couldn't relate personally to the movie, other than the hazing part we had to go through on the soccer team.

And I get KP's uncomfortableness with the hazing in the movie, because it brings back painful memories. But the Affleck character gives the movie a moral center because of how his hazing zeal is portrayed. Linklater obviously doesn't like him, and it shows in his treatment in the film. So the movie's moral voice is pretty much that the hazing is cool when done correctly and with an eye towards involving the youngsters into the fold after they pay their dues.

My two cents.

Dug the movie.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent aka the new Nic Cage movie where Nic Cage plays himself is a blast. A pure action buddy comedy in the best sense. Sure the plot is a little meta and silly but all that really matters here is Cage and Pedro Pascal are an absolute blast together.

We watched it a ton in HS- even more in middle school.  Even made paddles with the holes in them and everything. Never used them though lol. I was an ##### but not to that level.

Watched The Marksman with Liam Neeson on flight home from Dallas last week.  It was not terrible, but definitely not good either.  Solid 6.5/10, you can do better.

The box office sucks for movies unfortunately. The Northman didn’t do well at all. That was a really expensive gamble that we might never see again.

That does suck, but I got comfortable watching movies at home. I may head back to the theater for the Star Wars type movies but they need to come up with a new way to make revenue. Charge me $20 to watch it at home again. I went to see Batman in the theater and being around all the idiots blew. Not into it.

So weird, I don’t ever encounter idiots in the theater. I couldn’t tell you the last time there were people who were annoying and acting up. Guess I’m lucky in terms of what theater I’m going to..

2. City of God (2002)- Ultra stylish, ultra violent look at the life of teens in the slums of Brazil. It is so propulsive, so much happens and it doesn't get boring for even a moment.  The camera work and editing are really flashy but I thought it completely worked for this movie. Pure vicious entertainment. Standouts: I have to give credit to the editor, Daniel Rezende. He keeps this thing moving 100 mph, just a total frenetic pace and constant sense of excitement. That isn't easy to do and it is especially not easy to do without coming off as a show off or try hard.
In 2019 I was in Norway and roomed a night with a guy from Rio de Janeiro. I asked him about this movie and he said he had never heard of it. I brought it up on my tablet and showed him the trailer. "Ooh, Ahh, that's Rio! Yeah. That's Rio! That is Rio!."
Said he was going to make a point to see it soon after he got back home.

Great movie.
Like every other movie ever made, everyone doesn't agree.

My projector and 9 speaker sound system is all I need anymore
I hear you, I have a nice set up that I updated during COVID but it still doesn’t match the theater. Plus i enjoy the communal aspect. Especially movies like comedy, horror and action. They benefit so much from having an audience imo.

Same here. Don’t have to deal with the cost/hassle of finding a babysitter either, which I would need for the movies that I really want to see. So much easier to watch at home.

Not having kids certainly helps me in that regards. I think I’ve seen at least a dozen movies in the theater since October.

I don’t have kids either and, as a result, love going to the theater. It’s hard to replicate the atmosphere at home. It’s too easy to get up, get a drink, go to the bathroom, etc. And that takes away from the movie.

Man you must be fortunate. Tons of talking and milling around when I went.

% this is what is missing in general.  Just putting the damn phone and distractions down for 2 hours and get absorbed in something.

Yeah I have zero issues dropping my phone on the charger upstairs and not checking it until the next day.

Drives my friends and family nuts - i might take a day to text back

both of those in spades. other most common in-theater issues lately:

- people looking at their phones constantly- and very occasionally talking on them- which is like turning on a lighthouse in the middle of the theater while we're trying to get immersed in that giant screen and story (I had people doing this in the seats next to me on Broadway at a live musical!- at intermission, I asked politely that they stop... they were dumbfounded, and one of them had a sick daughter that she was checking on- she was actually offended that I'd asked. if your kid is so sick that you need to check your phone every few minutes, maybe don't go to a show?)

- people bringing their meals in with them- rustling around and smelling up the joint like curry or whatever.

smells, sounds, sights.... all of these things are bringing the rest of us out of the immersive experience that we just shelled out for (over $20/ticket here in NYC- plus online charges... family of 4 starts pushing towards $100, just to see a movie).

so yeah- I don't necessarily hate people, I just seem to feel a lot better when they're not around [/Barfly]
