Took the wife, who isn't a big action movie fan, to the new Mission Impossible today.. We both loved it..
She said "That was Great.. I can't wait for part 2."
I'll have to wait until I see it again, but right now I think this one might be my favorite.
It just "flowed" so well .
The non-action parts were just as good as the Action scenes.

do you need to know much backstory? i haven't seen any of the recent ones.

Watched Meet the Fabelmans and Living on a recent plane ride. For some reason, I had low expectations for Fabelmans despite enjoying Spielberg — did not think the story was one that would appeal to me, and still maybe not quite, but it is pretty effective and think it definitely deserved the Oscar nominations that it got (but also about right that it did not win any, as very good but not great).

Living is another one that surprised me. I love Ikiru, and view it as one of those perfect movies that does not need a remake. But another one that is pretty effective; Bill Nighy pretty good in it.

I'm probably the biggest Soderbergh honk on this board so I was all over Full Circle, his latest six-part series for HBO Max. The botched kidnapping setup is similar to Kurosawa's High and Low so far but only the first two episodes have been released and there are sure to be twists ahead.

I'm enjoying Soderbergh's film-making craft. It's a great looking production with interesting locations in Guyana and NYC and heavy use of tracking shots and low camera angles. I'm not as sold on the story yet. There are a lot of characters who are tied together by the thematic circles of the title. Some of the connections seem awfully tenuous which move the story along at the expense of the realism of the show. It also feels a bit slack to me like a two hour movie padded to six with extra characters and slower pacing.

This probably sounds too negative. I'm definitely in for the duration and would recommend it to others.

Watched the first two episodes and I'm hooked.

Not really.. They have flashbacks to fill in some back stories.
Wife has only seen Rogue Nation, but never once said "who is that" ?

Which is one of her favorite questions to ask, even while watching a show she's seen before :lmao:

Saw Theater Camp, cowritten and directed by Ben Platt... Perfect theater world spoof, amazing cast, silly but amazing songs- can't recommend enough.
Eta.. and flat out hilarious. So much laughter in the theater, we were missing the smaller off the cuff comments that were just as funny

Highly enjoyable popcorn flick, it really did flow well and it seemed to go by quick. I'm not sure if I like this or eagle eye better as far as the plot line is concerened.

Posted a review in one of the other movie theater threads but Barbie was an instant classic. It had been a long time since I saw a comedy in a packed theater, I forgot how much fun that is.
this is our next movie- but son is away at camp for 2 weeks, so there's ongoing debate about having to wait or not.

fwiw- I mentioned Theater Camp above... packed as well (albeit small, ****tiest indie movie theater in NYC) and non-stop laughter. now I'm really looking forward to Barbie.

I have added Theater Camp to my list of movies to keep an eye out for after your review and the strong trailer. As for your son and Barbie, I think almost anyone would enjoy it. It might be a little too modern for the very old and there is obviously a really small subset of people who just aren't going to like the movie because they view themselves as some kind of culture wars soldier and are always looking for the next fight. For anyone else, it's a slam dunk.

oh... I didn't explain. my son really wants to see it. the ongoing debate is because of that- making us wait for him to get back from camp to see it, or see it without him. (and he'd see it with friends anyways).

The Out-Laws (Netflix) is a :tfp:

Don't waste your time. An abomination of a movie. Not remotely funny, or entertaining. I feel like the premise could have led to a decent movie but this ain't it.

we have been so spoiled by the Christopher Guest mockumentaries that I am always up for one - the ads for Theater Camp looked good - lettuce know!

Even cinema‘a most famous curmudgeon Paul Schrader loved Barbie. Said “Just returned frok GRETALAND”. It’s her world now.” My favorite explanation on what makes the movie work beyond the music comedy is from Variety:

an exuberant jokey carnival of fourth-wall-breaking doll’s-house-as-rabbit-hole feminist surrealism — a candy-colored Dreamhouse burlesque that adores Barbie and resents her at the same time, that tweaks the patriarchy even as it treats Ken as the film’s most complicated character, and that has the wit to recognize that Barbie isn’t just a plaything, she’s a metaphysical projection of feminine ideals who also has the effect of undermining who women are.

I'm not saying it's flawless, but I'm really enjoying the series so far.

Moon (Pluto) - IMDB 7.8 : Sam Rockwell is the only person manning a moon station, along with a robot. He has an accident and scifi hijinks ensue. Good movie - I liked that the main characters didn't resist obvious conclusions, even though they meant a change in their worldview. I don't know that I loved the ending, but definitely worth a watch.

I love everything about Casablanca. Every frame, every word of dialog, every quiet moment...everything.
Casablanca probably deserves its own thread where everyone shares their first time watching and the impact it had on them.
My first time watching was 1981, Steamboat Springs Colorado.
My roommate said Casablanca was playing at the local theater and I said I'd never seen it. His look of shock/disgust/urgency made me realize I HAD to see this movie. He basically told me I was going. I wasn't sure what it was about, but I vividly recall seeing Ingrid Bergman's face unfold before my eyes and falling deeply in love with her. Took my breath away.
Here's a first-time reaction video that I just watched.
Made me think of my first-time watching Casablanca.

Do others remember their first-time watching Casablanca?

First time watching it I think I was too young, didn’t make an impact on me. I probably missed the quips, didn’t fully grasp the refugee angle and certainly didn’t care another a love triangle.

Bubba Ho-Tep (Tubi): Odd movie - horror comedy with Bruce Campbell playing Elvis in a nursing home where a mummy is doing mummy stuff. This has a good rating, but I just didn’t dig it. The horror was very slow, but the comedy is supposed to be the main point. And while it had some funny moments, it didn’t have a whole movie’s worth of them. I don’t recommend it.

Entergalactic (Netflix): Animated movie in the Spiderverse style. The story is a romcom and good - the romcom mistake/makeup was better than typical IMO. The animation, music, and overall vibe was great, though - there were some great fantastical scenes that really took advantage of what can be done with animation. Also really cool “lighting” throughout. I definitely recommend watching this, I think it’s a hidden gem.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

In AppleTV, there is a song in the trailer for Donnie Darko. I know I know the band. It's on the tip of my brain but I can't identify it. Strangely, neither can Google.

Anyone know what it is?

You have a link to the trailer? Maybe from YT?

Looked for it but can't find it. Seems specific to the version on the AppleTV app. I think it's an Echo and the Bunnymen song.
"Left me lying there... Left without a care..."

Shazam doesn't know it either. :loco:

Coincidentally, Echo & The Bunnymen is used on the other trailers. Not this one though.

How can neither of those apps find that song? How did YOU know it?

I want to buy this track, but where?

It must have been in the mid 70s on TV. Probably on UHF channel 18 in Milwaukee that played a lot of old Warners classics in the 8-10PM timeslot.

Bogart had a big revival in the 70s because his outsider image aligned with the zeitgeist. I remember seeing lots of posters of him when I hung out in malls as a teen.

I'm starting to come around on this thinking as well. I was one who touted it, and just got the 4k, but it doesn't hold up near as well as most other horror comedies we could think of like Cabin in the Woods or Tucker and Dale. I don't think it's holds up as a general recommend, but probably does for big Bruce Campbell fans.

Got the To Live and Die in LA 4K...what a freaking movie. Not enough love out there in the world for this one. Beats French Connection for me.
It's a brilliant film. As I've said before, the climax/conclusion is one of the best ever, the opposite of cookie cutter Hollywood. The cynicism is palpable throughout the whole movie. And that car chase....

You know, I went to see this at the movie theatre when I was a Junior in HS and I was left speechless back then and I'm never left without words. It was so different, so unique and really just brilliant. In fact, as I think about it, that one may be one of the few movies I watched a few times at the movie theatre. I've probably seen it countless times since. I have to agree with you 100%, this movie does not get nearly the love it deserves, it's one of my all time favorite movies. I grew up watching A LOT of movies as a kid and when you're 17 years old, you think you've seen it all, you know it all, etc. But, man, when I saw that movie, it just shocked the living hell out of me. Nothing happened the way I though it would happen and it's just so anti-typical-cliche-Hollywood. . . as Gr00vus said "oh and that car chase. . . ". . . oh, and the cast of that movie too, holy crap what a great cast.

Tucker and Dale rocks. I showed it to my niece and she loved it and has been showing her friends. Cockneys vs. Zombies also goes on that list.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen LA gonna add it to my watch list
A few funny reviews of it that might give you an idea of what you are in for:

This is the kind of movie where when someone gets shot, their head explodes, the blood is super bright red, and Wang Chung is playing. Masterpiece.

i basically snorted this movie off my television.

The pinnacle of Friedkin's style; To Live and Die in L.A. is simply put the hardest ****ing film of all-time. Balls-to-the-wall does not even begin to describe the level of intensity reached here as the film trades out nuance for an in your face swagger that just oozes out of the streets.
