Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (8 Viewers)

Watched that Adam Sandler Leo movie
Had some funny parts, also had the wife crying at the end (it’s a 5th grade class and has themes of growing up and our youngest is that same age)
 
The Holdovers - it was released in August this year, we rented it last night. We both (wifey and I) liked it very much. It stars Paul Giamatti as a crusty/grouchy instructor of history in an all boys prep school in the north east. The movie takes place in 1970/71 and the movie launches you into 1970 from the get go as if it is 1970 and you've been teleported back to a movie theatre experience from 1970 or throwback vibe if you will. I grew up in the 70's, this hits the nail on the head for me. I had never heard of it, I didn't read anything about it ahead of time but I would highly recommend it, I don't want to give anything away but, again, wifey and I both enjoyed it - two thumbs up.

For me 3/4 very weird but interesting. I really disliked the ending 10mins or so and feel I am really missing the punchline Ari Aster was trying to deliver after 2 hours and 45mins.

Put this on last night and agree, the ending didn't click for me. Thought it was a wild journey though and definitely more weird than Midsommer lol

It looks like one can rent it for $20 if they are so inclined.
 
I went to see The Polar Express with the 8yo today. Of course we've "seen" it a few times, but there's just something about seeing things in the theater. Mostly it makes you watch the damn thing. That's why I put seen in quotes there, as there were a few scenes I have never seen in my life, but I am sure we've had the movie on several times. Not my favorite holiday movie, but there are some touching scenes and it was a blast seeing the little kids bouncing out of there seats as we got closer to the Santa scenes.
 
No Time to Die (Prime): While there was great action in it, this must be what it's like for people to watch Avengers without seeing the other movies first. I saw Casino Royale once long ago, and I think I saw another Craig Bond movie that ended in a bombed out building? Anyway, I haven't seen most of the Craig Bond movies, and I think I missed a lot of what was going on as a result. Cristophe Waltz wasn't explained, the French girlfriend didn't stand alone, and anything involving Spectre needed some info filled in.

Call it Craig Bond 6 or whatever number, don't pretend it's a standalone movie.

That said, I liked it just fine for a movie on a plane.
 
Rye Lane on Hulu is probably the best rom-com I've seen in awhile. You might need subtitles but it's well worth it, really funny and it's in and out at 88 minutes. No wasted time and the film making is really impressive.

I was looking at newer action movies and franchises and this was near the top of my list. Last night was watching Beverly Hills Cop 2. I think I underestimate BHC1 and overestimate the sequel after thinking about them more.
 
If anyone still buys physical media and haven't boycotted Disney, Best Buy is blowing out a lot of their Steelbooks for $10 each. I bought Beauty and the Beast a couple weeks ago and it's stunning. For that price I even surrendered and finally bought the OT Star Wars.

I enjoy all of these. Wasn’t sure what to think of three of them, but the third one might be my favorite. Setting in Italy is beautiful and their lifestyle vs his and what he wanted to change was great.

I thought it was super funny, really liked it. It's for sure among my top of the year but it's campy and that doesn't always work.

I watched Showing Up (showtime/paramount) and after so many people including this on their 10 best and my general positive opinion of Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt, this was a massive disappointment for me. I liked the pigeon and honestly that's about it. This did almost nothing for me.

The problem with taking a chance and watching new movies is that it could have been time spent watching something you know you like.

I have zero idea what I was supposed to get from this movie.

I watched a lot of movies on flights lately. Nothing here is going to be groundbreaking since most have been discussed already, and several have been around for a while. I didn't actually love anything I watched, but in order of preference:

Skyfall - Yeah, this has been out for a long time. And I hadn't watched a Bond in 20(?) or more years. And I suppose it was silly. But I really enjoyed it. And having never seen Daniel Craig as Bond, I found I loved him in the role!

The Lesson - Maybe it was having no expectations (I'd never heard of this), but I thought this modern sorta-noir had fantastic acting and kept me intrigued throughout. It's a slow burn, but to me it was satisfying.

Asteroid City - I enjoyed this, especially the visuals, as I always do with Wes Anderson. More than most of his movies, though, I pretty much forgot it soon after watching.

Game Night - Watched this one based on reviews here. Definitely fun and kept me guessing. Laughed out loud a LOT at this. Now that I'm typing this, it should be above Asteroid City but I'm too lazy to move it.

The Haunting of Venice - Really dumb. Kenneth Branagh's accent was laughable. But still, kinda fun so I stuck with it.

Top Gun: Maverick - :lmao: This was so bad I turned it off after 25 minutes.

I might have forgotten one or two.

If you liked this you'd probably also like Craig's first effort as Bond in Casino Royale. I see it's from 2006 - wow, pushing 20 years ago. It was his best IMO.

I watched Genie on Peacock. It's an Xmas movie written by Richard Curtis who's credited with a bunch of well known rom coms from the 90s.

Melissa McCarthy plays a genie who saves the marriage of a workaholic played by Paapa Essiedu. It's inoffensive and McCarthy delivers a few laughs but as genie movies go, it's no 3000 Years of Longing. I didn't buy the central premise that the character's marriage was on the rocks and the holiday theming seemed superficial. It was a genie movie set at Christmastime kind of like Die Hard if John McClain had magical powers.

And of course, it is all love to those who post here. I am just happy there are still people who watch movies- regardless of taste and preference. I will soon be posting my now 4th annual favorite first watches of the year and I've got 25 great movies.
