But maybe best just to leave them to the clips. If they ever continue to be interested they can seek more out. But seeing a whole movie might bore them to the point of just being totally disinterested in old movies forever.

Every kid is different but we had success with our kids and classic films by making the old movies into an event. We'd watch them in theaters or at outdoor showings in local parks instead of just watching them at home. It was enough to get them over the hump of not being interested in black and white films with all dead people in them.

This was a while ago before phones were so prevalent and there were more repertory theaters screening old movies. But there's just something different about seeing a movie in a theater with an audience.

My kids enjoy sitting for movies, especially at theaters but also on our TV. I've taken both to the Film Forum here in NYC (great, ancient indie/art/revival theater) for a variety of movies.

The difficulty, especially with at home screening, is the getting their interest in it. If they're grabbed early, they typically stick through it. But if not, they're done.

And that's the problem for most modern audiences. Most "classic" movies allow the story to breathe and can start slowly before delivering a powerful ending.

Ever since Jaws changed everything, the story beats of a typical movie are different.

Becoming Led Zeppelin

Not sure why, but I expected more. I enjoyed it, but in the end if felt like a really good documentary. Bonzo's recorded interview was cool. And it was fun to watch the guys see themselves from a long time ago. I guess maybe I didn't feel this met a standard for being in a movie theater? Still worth a watch for any fan. My wife knows little about Zeppelin but she enjoyed it...at least the first half, and then she left to do some laundry.

I was also a bit surprised that the story stopped at Zeppelin II, but that makes sense given the title of course. Honestly, if you asked me what the title was halfway through the movie, I may not have recalled.

Anyway, still possibly the greatest band ever and When the Levee Breaks is the greatest rock song ever. So there.

My adopted 16 yo does love movies and that’s a bond we definitely have. We’ve been cruising through a lot of cartoons that I missed or haven’t watched in a long time: Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland. Plus some of my suggestions like Fast Times and Willow. We’ve both enjoyed all of them. Her biggest take away was how much better HS in the 80s was and how HS life now sucks so bad.

I am obviously impacted by my personal story of basically adopting a kid but I’m shocked to say the Mark Wahlberg movie Instant Family from 2019 is quite good. Funny and emotional. I liked it 100x more than I expected.

Started watching Black Hat because of a few of you... It's really good, thank you! I needed to start it much earlier and not half asleep. Will finish another time.

Spy movies and Steven Soderbergh are my sweet spot so it's like Black Bag was made for me. I went in with high expectations but it delivered the goods. There was almost zero action but more than enough intrigue and suspense to make up for it. The script had twists that were believable enough in the context of the movie and Soderbergh provided his usual efficient storytelling and elegant visuals.
Just saw this over the weekend. Liked it a lot. Fassbender nailed his role.

He's in that recent spy TV show as essentially the same, on paper, character. But plays it sooo differently. I love how pursed and tight he is physically in Black Bag. Probably subtle physical moves, but they transform him completely.

Man, I feel like I'm the outlier here and just don't like anything anymore. Maybe it's get off my lawn time.

Black Bag was okay. Not a movie I'll rewatch again. Acting was good enough, but I mean, I felt it was all too contrived. Movie stub planted in the waste basket and they just knew he would pick up on it and ask about it and that would bring him to distrust her enough to steal a spy satellite? And this was supposed to be a rock solid marriage with no trust issues. o.k. Lots of other things drove me batty about it and it was all just too convenient. And I mean absolutely no action whatsoever. I know Pierce Brosnan is getting older but between this movie and Mobland it seems all he can do is stand in an office/home or be driven in a car. And overact.

The Accountant 2 was about what you'd expect. I really dug the Accountant, but this one pales in comparison. Too much buddy buddy stuff between the brothers. And some of the fighting scenes, I mean, these guys are both rambos? Come on. I think I read this was going to be a trilogy with one more in the works. I'll probably go see it again but I would not think less of anyone if they told me that they'd pass after seeing movie #2.

Sinners was alright, not my cup of tea though. Way too much music in it, hell it was a musical if you ask me. And I like some blues, but 2 hours of it was an hour too much. Story was inane, but I do think the acting was decent, Michael B Jordan seems to be pretty damn good in everything he does, and the ancillary characters were all good enough. The sets, the wardrobe, the feel was all good, but to me, the movie just fell short of being excellent. My wife liked it more than me, but she also likes blues music more than me.

And I saw the latter two movies because we signed up for the Cinemark rewards program about a year ago and ffs, these have been the only releases that both of us had a mild interest in watching. In a damn year! And the movie trailers coming up, we may be hard pressed to find another movie or two in 2025. The new Fantastic Four trailer was absolutely the worst trailer I've seen in my life, bar none. NFW I'll be seeing that one. Ballerina and the New Jurassic Park movie look okay, but I really have a hard time with the two leads as veritable action figures. And John Wick putting up his arm when being shot out to deflect bullets has gotten to be a bit too over the top. And I really, really, really, really want to see 28 Years Later. But I mean its coming out next month and nary a review. I searched out an online trailer and it is not grabbing me at all. Looks like that Ray Liotta No escape movie.

Watching an old foreign classic for the first time.
Tokyo Story (1953)
Tokyo Story (東京物語, Tōkyō Monogatari) is a 1953 Japanese drama film directed by Yasujirō Ozu and starring Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama. It tells the story of an aging couple who travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The film contrasts the behavior of their children, who are too busy to pay them much attention, with that of their widowed daughter-in-law, who treats them with kindness.

A movie that stays in the pocket of authentic human pathos. Setsuko Hara as Noriko was perfectly cast, displaying the genuine kindness of her soul.

Watch Make Way For Tomorrow next and you'll have seen the two saddest movies I've ever watched.

Speaking of classics, thanks to 80s I've been revisiting some comedy classics: Super Troopers, Superbad, Wedding Crashers, and Tropic Thunder.
All. Epic. Flicks.
There are sooo many funny movies around this time. I could keep going on and on with movie that make me laugh a lot from Borat to Step Brothers to Jackass to The Hangover. At least for my tastes, this is the best run of comedy movies. They all also have slight dings if one were inclined to attempt to rank such movies, making it even harder.

There's not a 00s comedy that I would list that you think is funny? Napolean, 40 yo Virgin, Talledega Nights, Best In Show, Knocked Up, 21 Jump Street, Anchorman, I Love You Man, etc, etc ?

From that list I'll give you Best In Show.

I find Will Farrell, Seth Rogen, and Judd Apatow stuff to be generally pretty painful to be honest.

Brosnan takes over acting to a whole new level in Mobland.

It's random as heck. Of the top of my head;
Dodgeball
The Wedding Singer
Tucker and Dale Versus Evil
Some Like It Hot
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Austin Powers
Dr Strangelove
Caddyshack

Í own about 400 movies between digital and physical copies - I think about five of them are comedies. I just typically find there aren't enough jokes of the same theme to support a 90 or so minute movie. TV shows yes, movies no.

See, Andy - we do agree here for the most part as well. I find all but 1 1/2 of your list funny as well. I have been watching a lot of these movies, but also have been reminded of their flaws and dings as I posted above. I think all I have listed so far from the 00s have spots in them where I check out a bit. A too common trend for those comedies are to bloat to around 2hour, and they start to run out of jokes a bit. So, if I was ranking just comedies, these would be the 8/10 or higher type of movies on my list. If I am ranking all movies, they drop to 6/10-8/10 because of the flaws or skipping through scenes. Also thinking about it more, what I came up with is the peak for my comedy taste is more accurately the decade from late 90s to late 00s, to include stuff like Kingpin, Mary, Wedding Singer, Austin Powers, and Cable Guy.

What I tend to lean more to now is rom/coms or movies that blur comedy and horror or action. They tend to be shorter, and it is less likely to have those stretches where I check out a little. I am much more likely to grab Tucker and Dale, 50 First Dates, Cabin in the Woods, Hot Fuzz, Palm Springs, or Deathgasm before watching a straight comedy (or straight action) like listed above from the 00s.

Not around these parts.

I watched some movies of varying quality

Click-some of the comedy didn't really land for me but it's a family movie so I liked it because I do like stuff like that. 6.5/10

I also finally finished Furious. I had watched about half of this and then kinda put it off but I thought it was a fun action movie. I think it LOOKS very nice which I liked. 7/10

After Everything A rom com starring Jermy Allen White of The Bear fame. It was...ok? Kinda goes downhill after the first half and I felt some of the dialogue/situations were forced. 6/10

Bar Fight starring Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn 99 fame. It wasn't very good. I kind of like the premise. Really didn't care about any of the side storylines. 5/10

In anticipation of the next installment of Mission: Impossible we've just finished re-watching 3-7.

I've come to the conclusion that these are the most underrated action movies ever. It's absolutely astonishing how much is packed into each and every one of these films.
Well...

I'll be interested to hear what others think about Final Reckoning. My opinion...

The story is pretty messy, the film stops and starts too many times, the audience is left wondering 'how did I get here' too much, and the action feels kind of paint by numbers in this one. Except for the scene of the submarine - that was terrific.

Try Cockneys vs Zombies if you haven’t already.

I also went to the movies on Sunday for a matinee of Friendship starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. It is the kind of film I'd love nominated for screenwriting awards this award's season. It succeeds in building a framework around Tim Robinson’s chaotic nature—where so many films before it have failed miserably by trying to force their short-form subjects into a box. I loved it.
It was real funny but if one isn’t familiar with Tim, I wonder how they would take it? I could see a lot of people hating this movie. It was so much fun though and I loved the score as well. It certainly had that A24 touch to it, looked and sounded a bit like Uncut Gems.

When did this thread start? Was Blockbuster still around?

Who 'rents' movies these days?
I don't rent but I often use my local library in the way I'd use blockbuster in the ole days. HAha. I do have a physical media collection thought. Right at 1500 total films. If you've ever caught me on a stream, my background is my film collection.

:hey:

IF I have a list of movies that I want to watch, chances are I will have to rent a few or go through the library for about 70% of them. IMO people really overestimate how many titles you have access to with the streaming services. I am going through this now trying to watch a few from the early 00s I haven't seen for awhile and I can't seem to find much of my list without using the library.
