At some point, I will catch-up with the other 2 Creed movies. This morning I am going with the other big boxing movie that I somehow never saw: Ali. I love Michael Mann movies but always avoided this since I am not a big Will Smith fan, know the story too well and that I could just watch actual Ali footage. We shall see.

Never saw it as like you, not a huge Will Smith fan and I grew up watching all those fights. Really don't want to tarnish memories.
If podcasts are your thing, Jim Lampley sat with Rogan for 2 hours of just rehashing boxing knowledge so deep it will make think you never watched the sport. A fun listen if you're interested.

I’m probably wrong, but I came away from the movie thinking that the final scene wasn’t time travel, and that he never went back to fix the car crash - he was a creepy stalker and not an expert in time travel, and the chances that they traveled at the end were low - more likely they just got deleted. But the topic is time travel even if I don’t really think there was any, so it can be a time movie.

Last night was one of the main rewatches i felt i had to tackle: Tree of Life.
Tonight is a rewatch of an all-time favorite to prep for another main rewatch. Maybe not people would think of for the time theme, but I think it fits.

Saw the Zep doc.
I consistently forget- despite all of those guys being insanely talented, what an absolute genius Page is/was. He made a "follow your dreams" kind of comment that reminded me of the tone of Pele's autobiography. better advice- be a goat unique genius...AND THEN follow your dream. The rest of us can just go and do stuff and try to enjoy it. I felt like the doc slowed down with full performances of songs, even though i enjoyed seeing them.

So I watched The Lost City of Z, a docudrama about Major Percy Fawcett. I was ok, I guess. Critics liked it I suppose, 86% on RT while fans mostly didn't like it, 54%. A much more reasonable 6.6 on IMDB and to steal a line from @TripItUp Appropriately ranked. It was slow, long, kind of boring. I thought they could have told the story and left out several scenes. Some unrealistic stuff as well. I don't really like the ending that much (and I doubt that's what happened IRL, though possible) It was based on a book, don't know how faithful it is to the book but its possible that the ending and some of the other stuff were included since it was in the book? I don't think this is a must watch, I might even suggest to skip it and find something better to do with your 2 hours but you could find a worse movie to watch.

Lol. It does check the boxes, and I had considered it but I had to check off a few other new to me movies instead.
I am dragging my feet watching Before Midnight, but that is the other important rewatch I need to get to this week for research (and what I hinted at above). I might pivot to something more fun tonight though depending on mood.

I do want to watch it again but I remember being bored and disappointed the first time. The concept is smart and difficult to execute so I appreciate what Linklater was going for but it just wasn't that compelling and I don't think the children developed into interesting actors.Boyhood was another I had really high as a possible rewatch, but I couldn't talk myself into it.

All this, and then added to my list is my love of the Before trilogy and I thought he made a better movie or two doing similar themes with people through time with that series, just not in one movie. Not sure how excited I am to see whatever this 20+ year movie shoot thing he is working on now.

I remember NOT hating it wich means it probably really is that bad. The fact that I can't remember any specifics about a 13 year old movie might mean that it was pretty mediocre and unmemorable but the ratings aren't horribble. 66 all on RT and a respectable 7.4 on imdb.

It's not great and it's not all that original - I mean, vampires are what they are. And I wish it had a bigger point to make, but it doesn't IMO.
But I liked it anyway. Particularly the music. A solid 7/10.

I watched it twice but like close together. I liked it so much I watched it with my wife and older 2 boys. Loved it.

Harrison Ford could have toned it down a bit but I liked it. It could have been heavy handed but wasn't.

Right there with you on Jimmy Page. Loved the footage of young Jimmy. Loved all of it. Brought me back to middle school when I first discovered them. Blew my hair back!

Was really looking forward to this movie when it came out and was thoroughly disappointed with it for all the reasons you mentioned. Slow, boring, never seemed to get there and the ending was less than satisfying. If someone is thinking this is a Indiana Jones type adventure, this ain't it.

Continued to by summer film fest of 21st Century Movies
Nickel Boys (2024): Based on the Colson Whitehead novel about a Florida juvenile detention center that was abusing and murdering Black teens. The story is interesting and it has some twists. The thing that has to be discussed is the cinematography. It's filmed in a 1st person POV. Sometimes from their visual perspective, sometimes like camera is sitting just behind the back of their head. The 2 main characters get their own POV and it's always from one of their perspectives. So while the movie looks beautiful and almost every shot is visually stunning, I don't care for the 1st person POV approach and greatly diminished my enjoyment and I found myself losing interest a lot. It's very well done but just wasn't for me.
Creed (2015): I already commented on this but it was so much better than a legacy sequel to a 40 year old franchise had any right to be. I didn't love it because it was still a bit formulaic and the beats of the Rocky stories are too familiar at this point but it's a really good movie and I wish I had seen it in the theaters when it came out. I bet it was a lot of fun on the big screen with a crowd.
Ali (2001): Well made but I did not like Will Smith as Ali. I knew the story too well after having read and watched so much real life Ali content. Perfectly fine movie. Nice biopic but I can't say I will ever watch it again.
Match Point (2005): I saw this when it came out and absolutely loved it. So much so, I think my wife and I immediately rewatched it the next day. It's a sexy modern Hitchcock movie in the line of a Dial M for Murder. On a rewatch 20 years later, it slipped a bit for me. I think both leads are more sexy than they give good performances. Really nice supporting cast though. Maybe as I've seen more Hitchcock movies and Hitchcock inspired movies the last 20 years, this just felt a little less special. Still think it nails the concept it's going for and highly recommend.

I liked True Grit a lot. It's better than the original.
I think I downplay the Magnificent Seven remake a bit because I had seen the original so many times that those characters/actors are burned into my brain. It was jarring (for me) to see the roles recast. The original wasn't High Art, but the remake didn't - IMO - didn't improve on it. And it's too long. I'm always in for a Righteous Denzel Washington Revenge performance, though.
