Redskins release Chris Cooley (1 Viewer)

Per roto.Interesting. Certainly helps davis and maybe cooley latches on somewhere.
Yes, I waited on TE and grabbed Freddy Davis very late in my draft. This makes me feel a bit better about it, not that Cooley staying in WAS would of made a huge difference. Maybe my Steelers will pick Cooley up. Could be a nice addition if he has anything left in the tank.

Cooley was under contract to make several million this year, he was coming back from injury, and he looked extremely slow in preseason, so this isn't a total surprise. I thought he might renegotiate and stay on for the vet minimum. I guess they'd rather use the roster spot for someone else.

Great guy, intelligent and funny, I'm going to miss him with the Skins.

Heath Miller down?

Yeah, I don't think he was even listed as a TE on the depth chart (saw somewhere he was listed as a FB). He had a very promising career at one point; was a hot name as a young TE rising. But all the knee and leg and ankle injuries have done him in. Someone will probably bring him in and have a look but I couldn't guess that he would have much production. Maybe the Seahawks or Raiders?

Chris Cooley's eight-year run with the Washington Redskins is over. The team let Cooley break the news himself in a sudden, although not shocking press conference.

"The Washington Redskins are releasing me today," Cooley said. "This will be my last day as a Redskin. I'm very fortunate to have played for a team and a fan base that have embraced me like they have. This team changed my life. I have every belief that I can still play football at a high level. I'll take some time ... not sure I could wear another jersey."

Cooley stressed that there were no hard feelings and said he was "so excited" for the future of the team. He was part of the team's last two playoff appearances. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Cooley wanted a chance to start, and the release allows Cooley the chance to do that. Cooley was backing up Fred Davis and playing some fullback in Redskins camp. He had a large salary for his role and there have been questions about his speed following repeated injuries.

"We all know what Chris means to this organization. He's a guy that we've leaned on a lot since I've been here," Shanahan said.

We're not sure Cooley will get another chance to start necessarily, but he shouldn't have trouble finding a job. He boasts a versatile skill set and is only 30 years old. Cooley has made two Pro Bowls, but missed nine games in 2009 and seven games in 2011 to injury.
Class guy. I enjoyed seeing him having fun playing the game.

Maybe they saw me dropping him in a couple of rosters last week.

In his prime was a good player to watch. Hopefully someone might pick up the phone to him mid season in event of injury to obtain some veteran smarts.

This has no impact on Davis's ranking. Cooley was never in their plans this season.
I get your gist of what you are saying but yes, it does have an impact because as long as Cooley was on the team, he was being forecasted to have SOME of the work. By removing him, you completely clear it up. I agree I don't think it changes my personal opinion of where I would draft him but its highly likely that somewhere in the next day or so, you can look wherever it is you look at a ranking or mock draft and you will see Davis creep up just a hair and there might even be a little blurb in there saying something to the effect of "With Cooley gone, Davis has the gig to himself".

Okay then.

Cooley is one of those likeable football players where economics got in the way after his injury. Hopefully he can latch on somewhere else and play some more football.

Cowboys possibly? Bring him in cheap good insurance for witten. Dallas could use a vet with good hands and blocking skills. Also this guy brings great presence to a locker room always quiet goes out and does his job

Ok, so far we ahve Raiders, Seahawks, and Cowboys as potentials. Anyone else have any where else that might make sense?

Eagles in need of a 3rd TE, especially considering their increased utilization of 2-TE sets.

Hey, RN! Don't know where you got this info, but I can say with some certainty that it's not quite accurate. Some folks around here, and in the Redskins Thread know that I've got some friends who work/have worked for the Team over the last several years, and I've been able to get some pretty solid scoop from time to time. From what I've been told by folks close to the situation, up until about a month ago, the 'skins were planning for the very real possibility that Cooley would be the starting TE, because it was absolutely viewed by Allen/Shanahan that in regards to Fred Davis and his fondness for cannabis sativa, they were viewing it as a 'when', not an 'if' that Davis was going to get suspended for failing another piss test. Apparently the tests that were waiting to be analyzed came back clean, and the multiple tests Davis has been subjected too over the last 90 days have consistently come back negative to the point now where the Redskins are confident Davis has matured to the point where he's learned when, and when not, to get high......in my opinion, I don't think Davis can stay clean, and this will wind up biting the Redskins in the butt, HOWEVER...if you ARE smitten with Fred Davis' freakish athletic ability and soft hands, and had reservations about drafting him due to these extracurricular issues, the one thing this move screams is that the Team, at least, believes in Davis enough to remove the safety net. I say beware - the organization has a glaring history of making bad decisions since 1999...

...regardless, this wasn't done in the classy way you'd expect a quality organization to handle the release of one of it's modern-era's most loved and respected players...

...yet another epic fail on the part of Daniel Snyder. Thanks again, dude! For ALL you do!!!

...alas, poor Cooley, I knew ye well...

Miami could use a set of reliable hands, he could easily be the TE1 on this roster. He will definitely land somewhere, problem is we don't know how well he is gonna do. Redskins were not showcasing him much, and if they were it doesn't speak well of Cooley.

Most overrated fantasy TE ever?
I wouldn't say that. When he was healthy, he had some good output. His problem is bad luck. He had crappy QBs and then he got his legs hurt. But he had talent. Still does, i assume. Just looks like he had a high price tag and needs to prove he is healthy. Like that eagles thought above. They could make use. thought they were happy with harbor though.

Giants? They have no real depth after Bennett (who is a wild card anyway).

With all due respect as a suffering fellow Redskin fan, you've always disliked Davis and loved Cooley. What changed in the last month is that Cooley looked slow on the field and, despite their hopes for him to rebound to his former form, just was going to be an old slow guy. Davis was ahead of him, Paul is undergoing a crash course to be a TE and Paulsen was going to be on the field a good bit.

'Skins homers - does this reflect at all on Paul's dynasty upside? Does he have any dynasty relevance? I'll hang up and listen.

Remains to be seen. He's been concentrating on learning the routes and blocking assignments and has been doing OK with those. Catching the ball is where he has struggled this preseason. Whether that's because he's still thinking too much of the pattern to run or because he's Roberto Duran, we just don't know yet.

Hearing a little buzz on Buffalo boards and radio. Which would make me sad, because I'm a believer in Scott Chandler in big leagues this season.
