Reggie Bush - Physical Comps (1 Viewer)

some scouts were hoping bush would be about 205, & instead he turned in at around 200... as he said, he will probably put on some weight as he gets older...

this led me to a question about marshall faulk, who is often cited as a comp player for his stellar combo of rushing/receiving skills...

faulk is NOW between about 205-210, i think... does anybody remember if he came into the league smaller than what he currently is at (like a lot of players)... possibly some san diego (SDSU) or indy (forst pro stop) homers?

it would give us some additional & relevant info to sort out the... can he be an everydown RB question?

ditto for OJ simpson (old school comp :) )... i think he may have been taller, but i'm pretty sure he wasn't 215-220... maybe closer to 205-210... they may have similarities in their explosive speed & dazzling open field moves...

bush is also likened to barry sanders at times, due to their freakish change-of-direction ability & pinball-like crazy short area moves... i think barry was around 205-210, but at about 5'8", would have been 2"-3" shorter, & had a more squat, powerful lower body (as did emmitt)... bush looks a little more high cut...

I could not find Faulk's actual size, but the below-listed bio sounds like a carbon-copy of Reggie Bush.

Several weeks before draft day, Marshall held a special workout for scouts. During the session, he produced a vertical leap of 37 inches, and ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash. While those numbers helped project Marshall as a high-first-round pick, NFL teams still had questions about him. Most concentrated on his size and durability.

Thought that look went out of style in the 70's.
....and bell bottoms were also a product of the 60's and 70's, and I see young people wearing them now. Also, those ugly plastic frame glasses were in style in the 50's and 60's, and that's the style now. Go figure. If I wore the types of glasses they wear now in the 70's, I would have had to fight everyday.

Tiki Barber is listed at 5'10" 200lbs ...I'm pretty sure he was around 190 when he was drafted. He's done alright .

I find it funny that people say Bush is too small/not durable/etc. when a lot of guys his size, like Faulk, are leaders in yards from scrimmage. Tiki Barber is only 5-9, 200 and he led the league last year. Some other backs around Bush's size - Edge (6-0, 214), Portis (5-11, 204 when drafted), and Dunn (5-9, 180). Those guys were 4 of the top 7 RB's in yards from scrimmage last year.

Yes, but it took Tiki about 4 or 5 years before he really established himself as a The Guy at RB for his team, and even then he still didn't reach his full potential until about year 8 or 9. Another comparison that may be valid regarding Bush's size is Clinton Portis. Here's his pre-draft write-up from NFL.com:

Prospect Profile

Clinton Portis

Position: Tailback

College: Miami (Fla.)

Height: 5-11

Weight: 204

Hometown: Gainesville, Fla.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Powerfully built outside runner with sudden moves turning the corner … Cradles the ball securely and has the leg drive to drag defenders for extra yardage … Effective short-area receiver who is adept at picking up the blitz … Has elusive moves through the holes, displaying the vision to consistently pick the right rush lanes and the lateral agility to get into second gear, quickly turning the corner … Has the quick stutter-step and side-step moves to elude defenders in the open … Runs at a low pad level with impressive inline balance.

Negatives: Has had ball-security problems in the past … Shows marginal willingness to face up to defenders as a blocker … Runs a little too erect at times, but has the ability to accelerate around the corner.

Myth: Reggie Bush is too small to "carry the load" and will have durability problems.

Fact: Reggie Bush is plenty big to be a franchise back and has no injury history to speak of.

Myth: Reggie Bush has never carried the ball 20 times per game consistently, so he probably can't.

Fact: Reggie Bush never HAD to carry the ball 20 times in a game, and was never asked to. I've never been to Canada before -- does that mean I can't go there?

The truth is that we can all speculate, but until he plays no one will know his durability for sure. It has less to do with his size and more to do with whether he's put together well enough genetically. Lot's of very big backs get injured, along with small backs. Can he carry the load? We'll see. But I would say the same thing about ANY rookie RB.

I think we will learn what we need to about Bush once he is drafted and we get to see him in preseason. All will be clear before our drafts.

One thing I can tell you, if Bush fails it's not because of his personal make-up. He's a dedicated player who stays in shape and works out hard, and he's level headed and wont' flake. He ain't no Curtis Enis or William Green.

That you can take to the bank.

I would argue that the majority of people on this board this time of the year are in dynasty leagues with rookie drafts. Most of these will occur in May or June well before the first preseason game. Honestly, we won't see enough of Bush to make any determination of his true ability in any pre-season game.

I really like Bush's drive to be the best. Being from SD and working out with LT during the offseason is going to be a huge advantage to him. LT is going to push him and Bush doesn't strike me as a guy that will quit because it's too hard. He seems to realize that he can be as good as anyone in the league with enough work. Bush and LT are extremely competitive and I can see the competition making both players better.

Bush is gonna work out with LT this offseason?

I haven't heard about it yet, but I'll check with someone on the Chargers board. Here's what LT had to say about Bush:

Tomlinson met Bush "out of high school at a sports banquet" and over the summer, Tomlinson invited Bush to see what his workouts are like and give him a taste of the NFL.

In their workout Tomlinson said Bush "did a great job of keeping up," and according to Tomlinson, the outlook for Bush is that "he'll do well, play many positions and be like a wild card."

When Bush worked out with Tomlinson (I believe last summer), Tomlinson was impressed because when the workouts got to the toughest part and Reggie had to go puke, he came right back for more....

No link - LT was talking about it in an interview one time...

I confirm that I read this in an article about Reggie in ESPN the Mag a few months ago-
