Reparations for slavery? (1 Viewer)

This group wants reparations TO Africa (much of it in cancellation of third world debt) , not to the descendents of slaves. While you can argue that the descendants of slaves may not deserve an economic windfall, I think it is fair that we compensate the nations whose capital reserves (human capital reserves that is) were plundered at a time when human labor costs was one incredibly important to the development of a nation. I think the cancellation of third world debts (which opens another whole can of worms thread) is a pretty fair way to pay back this debt and maybe allow us to move forward. I think their 777 trillion figure is obviously laughable, but they are including damages and pain and suffering for colonialism there too.

he West is being asked to pay Africa $777 thousand billion within five years in reparation for enslaving Africans while colonising the continent.
Pay a country? no way. Both world wars involved alot of fighting in Africa for the US military where thousands and thousands of lives were lost. If not, they'd be run by Hitler now and he preferred W.A.S.P.'s. Let's call it even.
Look up debt relief. No one is paying checks.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World_debtissue of third world debt

G8 Summit 2005: Aid to Africa & Debt Cancellation
I am all for finding a way to ease the mountainous and ruinous debt these nations carry. The IMF is a big load of ugly IMO. However reparations isn't the way.
Doesn't America have it's own debt to worry about?
As do most first world countries. A little different animal though.
Africa is a very resource-rich part of the planet. If they can't figure out a way to turn their resources into a cash cow and pay off that debt, then they don't deserve to have it forgiven.
Color me shocked.
Tell me that a country like Zambia or Tanzania can't make money off their resources. I'd love to hear your reasoning.
You know it isn't that easy. And a quick question why could we forgive Germanys debt? Why did we give the Brits a sweet heart deal? Some 60 of the poorest countries have paid $550 billion in both principal and interest on $540 billion in loans. They still owe $523 billion dollars. Doesn't seem like a real fair deal. South Africa is still paying off loans used to keep apartheid running so they are paying off the loans the west made to a corrupt regime that oppressed them. I could go on.

We shouldn't have forgiven Germany's debt, nor for that matter should we have pushed to forgive Iraq's debt. Credit cards aren't a real fair deal either, if you just make minimum payments. And regime change is no excuse. Nor is a corrupt leader stealing the principal.

Oh come on. We make these loans knowing full well the deal and then we stick the people who got nothing from them with the bill. The Wests hands are filthy in this.

Then we shouldn't make the loan or give the foreign aid, frankly. I apply the same logic here as I do to all forms of redistribution of wealth. At least most of the time. But you've diverted me from the main point. There are very few countries in Africa that are resource poor. If they managed their resources properly, not only would they be out of debt, but they'd be on their way to becoming healthier economies. It's like forgiving someone's debt becquse they have no incom, but they're sitting on a basement full of gold bars.

Umm.. Is this really FFA? 3 pages of discussion without a single "fight" breaking out??? Wow!
Give it time - we're working on it. tommyGunz hasn't checked in yet.
To be fair, I think Gunz knows a guy who lives in Africa.
Actually, I know a guy that married a Rwandan and is going to buiuld a house and retire there. I think he's totally out of his gourd. But then, he is a Canadian.

Never been sub-Saharan, but it seems like one group is always trying to wipe out another. I think if I lived there I'd want at least a machine gun turret and an escape tunnel.

He is. Love makes you stupid.

A friend of a friend once lived for awhile in Cambodia (by choice). Again, never been there, but I couldn't imagine making that decision. Some of the stories he retells are amazing.
Never been there either - but been to Thailand. Too damn hot for my tastes.
You should check out Siberia. I hear.

Been to Tashkent and Bistek - close enough.

How big of a city is Tashkent? My buddy Boz got a Russian bride from a place that sounds very similar. Aside, it turns out the only thing she loved about him was his haircut.

I just saw a black woman on the Colbert Report arguing that Barack Obama isn't black. There's a lot of dumb people out there.
that was pretty incredible. she was calling him an "african-african-american". i was hoping colbert would slap her.
I didn't see the interview, but I agree with her. Obama is not a descendent of slaves. That makes a big difference.
I always thought black was a descriptive term.
If someone immigrates here from the Bahamas, are they an African-Bahamian-American or a Bahamian-African-American? And do they get reparations?
Are they descendents of slaves?
How do you think they got to the Bahamas in the first place?
