Reeve was 34 when shooting the Matrix. You'd like a young actor who can portray a calm, understated personna.

Ewan McGregor: age 27 (was shooting Phantom menace at the time)

Hayden Christiansen: age 17 (already had been in several films)

Leonardo DiCaprio: age 22 (already a big star coming off Titanic)

Will Smith: age 29

Wesley Snipes: age 36

Gary Oldman: age 40

Edward Norton: age 29

I would be interested in giving 40 year old Gary Oldman the role and seeing what he could do with it.

No, because the movie was perfect with him in it. Keanu Reeves is one of the great underrated actors of our generation.

I sense sarcasm here, but The Matrix is probably my favorite movie of all time. Keanu has little range as an actor but his stiffness worked for the role.

Yeah I agree. I'm not sure what else you'd want from an actor in that role. It's not like Neo was supposed to be charming or funny or anything.

I honestly can't think of a better person for the role. It was almost like they wrote the movie with him in mind. I guess the fight scenes could have been better with somebody else, but I am not so sure. The almost awkward rigidness he has seemed to work.
