Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (2 Viewers)

@General Malaise we don't have bottles of water in the house either. It's dumb to have them anyway - our tap water is delicious

Oh, I agree 100%. Plastic water bottles are a scourge. Tap water out here is also delicious.
Some argue bottled water is a scam.. I can see it now, filling these bottles with the same water that you and already get from the faucet.

That's precisely what was happening. Nestle got sued for it.
I like the convenience of bottled water on long road trips.

You're not alone. It just seems really silly to me to pay for something you already pay for at home - water. Or you can get for free at a water fountain or faucet somewhere. Paying for the same substance to come in a plastic bottle that's not good for a planet is another problem I have, but I realize my voice is drowned out by those who like the convenience. I can just do my small part.
Like someone else said, “from my cold dead hands”. Plastic is here forever.

I'm not trying to change your mind. You do you. I just think it's ludicrous to pay for something twice and I think plastic water bottles are bad news. But, there's far more people with little regard for Ma Earth than there are those who care for her but that's a story as old as time itself and we're probably derailing the thread.

We don't dine out very often but part of the financial calculation for me is NOT HAVING TO DO DISHES AND CLEANUP!!!!1111one So it's more this year verses five years ago, okay.....I think I'd pay a good $10 or more to get out cleaning up pots, pans, knives, loading the dishwasher, putting food away, etc.....

I'm not sure if I'm making any sort of point in here, but the cost of things is more everywhere and it can be a little silly but my god, do I enjoy the night off from cleanup.

paper plates bro...chicks dig them

My wife won't let us have them in the house.....no bottles of water either.

:kicksrock:
Good. This is literally killing our planet.

Is there a shortage of either?
What do you mean?
Who cares if it takes water and electricity to make paper plates as you said?
Because the question from @Keerock was which is more environmentally friendly, and he failed to touch on the fact that making the paper plates also requires using water and electricity just as washing does
Seems trivial to me.

It's not, but I am not here to convince you

You guys know you can make folders and put multiple apps in them right?
Seems to be a PITA on an iPhone, though I did manage once to make a folder called "Stuff". It has one app in it (Spotify). Could probably spend some time learning how to get more in there, but not yet all that motivated to do so. Academically, I know it's easy and all.

One thing that surprised me is that I did something once to make the Notes app icon four times bigger than normal. It's still that way now -- no idea how I did it or how to get it back. Yes, I could Google it and figure it all out. No, I don't feel like it just yet.

Might be that laziness we're talking about, just manifest elsewhere. Inertia is a heckuva drug.
If I can figure out how to make groups of apps on my iPhone, most anyone can…

Thank you for the last part of that sentence.

I can, I believe -- just have to put in the effort to learn. Almost everything I've learned to do on the iPhone, I just figured it out or saw someone else do it. Anything for which I might have to go out and find specific directions to execute, I've pretty much skipped over.

But seriously - some phone cases do block maybe 1/4" or so of screen real estate around the edges (due to fat fingers mostly). Apparently, for full use of an iPhone's features ... that real estate is important.

Not convenient on a long road trip. Plus I don’t trust faucets everywhere. That’s how sickness can ruin a vacation.

The soda fountains at convenience stores have a water option.

you a long haul trucker? I do 6 hour road trips to go skiing. one 40 ounce reusable container does me just fine.

No I’m not a trucker. I’m talking about not only the convenience of bottle water in the car, but also at the hotel. I already said I don’t trust all water faucets everywhere and I don’t want to get sick while on vacation

You'll take my bottled water, paper plates, paper towels and zip lock bags from my cold dead hands.
My wife yells at me if I don’t recycle. I smile as I heed her wishes, but when she isn’t looking……..
Not cool man. Disposal of trash is a huge concern
Recycling is such a scam. There are estimates that as little as 10% of trash put in "recycling" bins actually get recycled and at most like 35%.
I’ve worked late a few times and saw the cleaning staff dump the recycle trash and regular trash bins into the same bigger bin and push that bin away.

Also not really concerned about my environmental impact when you have Taylor Swift and Elon and the rest of the 1% taking private jets everywhere they go
While the private jet thing is a real issue, this seems like a really cynical and shortsighted way to look at the world. Do your part, and others may follow.
OMG can this thread get back to its original purpose? And leave this holier than thou political preaching for another forum. This is why we can’t have nice things here.

I paid $5 for a small Starbucks cold brew ($3 something plus tip)

Yeah Lambskin needs to use a stupid paper straw so billionaires can continue polluting the planet

Why tip a barista? When I pull up to a drive thru and they stick that credit card device in my face, I pay with exact cash. I’m an excellent tipper in sit down restaurants however. Tipping getting coffee is like tipping at McDonalds, you don’t do it, or at least I don’t.

We have a Starbucks on campus. These ladies bust their *** every day and are always polite even when they have a line 25 deep. So on the rare occasion I pay with cash I toss them a few bucks :shrug;

Do you tip at a fast food restaurant getting a burger?

You guys know you can make folders and put multiple apps in them right?
That’s cheating

Seriously though, I have travel and “stuff I rarely use” folders on my phone. But I don’t wan’t extra e-clutter, as I can always search for lesser used apps by swiping right.

Aside from the clutter, having less apps takes up less storage space, may consume less battery, and poses a lower security risk than willy-nilly addition of them.

I do love appetizers though. Just wish they weren’t so ****ing expensive.

Sometimes, usually if there’s a prompt I might toss them a few bucks

A barista making my drink is a lot different than a barista pouring a hot cup of coffee..... there are levels to execution of barista work for my drinks

The prompt at a fast serv / counter place is the problem I have with it. It’s called “tip creep”. I don’t feel a bit guilty selecting none at places like that and I am a great tipper at a sit down restaurant with full service.

edit - I will tip a couple of bucks for curbside pickup, especially those that package well.

This ship sailed at least 25 years ago. Baristas at coffee places get tipped more or less as bartenders by custom now. In the 1990s, around here, you might pay $2.19 at the coffee-shop counter and tell the barista to keep the change. That would also hold true if you got a coffee + pastry for $4.69. If the change was like three cents, you'd fish in your pocket for two quarters to make it an appreciable tip.

For a while, it was really a lot like barroom tipping -- a buck a drink. Now they try to base it on percentage like at a sit-down restaurant -- but the percentages shown by the point-of-sale device are often something like 20%-25%-30%. I think today, if you went into a Starbucks regularly, usually ordered two lattes to go, and threw a dollar on the counter every time ... you'd get branded a cheap customer. If the total is $7.49, you're "supposed to" either tip on your card at one of the suggested percentages, or throw down $10 and say "keep the change".

TL:DR -- Coffee-shop baristas aren't in the "counter service" category anymore, for better or for worse. And there's been follow-on effects of that regarding "correct" tipping.

That’s a widget. Two of those made the cut on my single page, though real estate needs may force downsizing.

Oh yeah, you can stack widgets, too. And some provide additional functionality, compared to regular icons.

I’m not buying it. People who pour my coffee at a drive thru aren’t getting a tip. I hate tip creeping at places where I’m getting minimal service.

I can treat a coffee shop as pretty much a bar -- I mean, was a buck tip reasonable to be handed a beer bottle? Probably not ... but I did it all the time anyway.

The line I'm trying (and often failing) to draw these days is at OTHER counter service. The true "hand already-made item over the counter" type of places - donut shops and many bakeries are classic examples. Sometimes, though, it is an on-the-spot judgment call as to whether you want to be remembered somewhere you'll keep going back to ... and there, a tip can be to your benefit as a customer, even if it breaks the social expectations of times gone by.

Laziness for sure but a lot of these folks are addicted to the food. It's made that way for a reason.
It's such an easy habit to break and if you do, on the rare occasions you do eat it, your body tells you why it was such a good idea to leave fast food in the first place.
This idea can be extended to more healthful eating in general, but people tend to dig in their heels before giving it a shot.

What I didn't see that you could do was something like: Have one Widget on "Page 1", two widgets on "Page 2", six widgets on "Page 3" ... something like that.

I also didn't see was whether or not a folder (containing multiple apps) could be a Widget.

I'll tell you what -- if you're truly just getting a plain cuppa joe poured for you at a Starbucks ... I can give you a pass on not tipping. I can still respect you after that. Of course, a pass from me and $6 will buy you ... well, you know :D

Where the barista service really moves into cocktail-bartender territory is when they're making the PITA drinks for customers: Half whip half soy 80% oat milk**, half Americano, half-caf, 3/4 a shot of espresso, flax milk whipped cream with unicorn sprinkles and Sumatran bean floating on top. Order one of those, and you're a monster for not throwing down 30%.

Off topic for the thread, but what the hey:

If your area collects recycling at the street, and you regularly sort garbage and use the service ... make sure the recyclable items are actually getting recycled. It's become fairly common for municipalities to simply dispose of recyclables into the same landfills used to store other garbage. Around here, the parish's recycling contract expired and never got renewed and it was kept kind of quiet for some reason. Anyway, for maybe the last 6 -7 months, recycling bins put to the street just get dumped into the regular garbage trucks.

My garbage folks tried this stuff for a while. Neighborhood finally caught on and fired them. the new company charges more for recycling, like a lot more to "ensure" it goes to the proper spot. F right off.
I just wanted to read about restaurant prices ... :kicksrock:
THAT NOT WHY WE ARE HEAR!!!!1!!!

I don’t believe in tipping for a mocha either. Again, I have an issue with tip creeping in general at fast serv / counter type places. Coffee drinks are expensive enough . Perhaps too expensive. I do believe in tipping well packaged pickup / curbside or delivery (pizza) and full service restaurants.

Then what are you tipping for exactly? You mentioned a couple of times that you are a 'big tipper' so are you tipping for somebody to bring your food out to you and take it away? Is that any harder than making a mocha? Your server is going to tip out the person who made your {insert entre of choice here} along with the bartender who made your {insert drink of choice here} or if you don't need a bartender, you're tipping your server for your soda pop or whatever it is you drink.....is that harder than making a mocha?

Yeah, widgets can be quite useful, both for organization and functionality. The bigger size also can be a selling point, as I’ve selected a few key ones to populate the Home Screen of my 80-year-old father-in-law’s phone.

I don’t think folders can be widgets. If you press and hold the screen, then tap ”+” once stuff starts wiggling, you can see which widgets are available, and dabble into the exciting world of smart stacks.
