Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (1 Viewer)

With the rate restaurants are closing now what does the future bring?
Are restaurants closing up at any substantially different rate than year's past? Restaurant business has always been tough.

The craft beer scene out in Oregon is like a daily death toll being reported during a plague. Seems like every week another 'up and comer' is closing it up for good. Not sure why that is other than over saturation and costs to operate forcing their hand.
RIP Cascade (most likely)

Yeah, that was one of them. Thought of you on Saturday as we were in Tillamook - was going to give de Garde a test drive, but 1) the Tillamook Parade was going on and the congestion was awful, so we punted and 2) I just can't get into sours, man. I've tried and tried and tried and it just hits me wrong.
by any chance have you tried

Duchesse de Bourgogne

No, I'm sure I could find it at the local bottle shop near me but I'm just not a very adventurous beer drinker. I buy what I like and tend to stick with it.

On ceiling, the canned beer at my grocery store is interesting too.

Some of the local breweries are there and a 4 pack of pints is $18.

That's getting up there.

Still better than the brewery where 4 points would be $28. But feels like a lot for a 4 pack of cans.

Especially when it's sitting next to great beers like Pernicious IPA or Space Dust for $13 for a 6 pack of 12 oz cans.
Yea 18 is too much unless it’s a strong double IPA or something. But i would say most local breweries around here beers are in the 15 dollar range for the 4 pack of pints or the 6 pack of 12 oz cans. Definitely prefer the larger cans though. A 4 pack seems less dangerous than a 6 pack :)

I'd wager that most places with chains also have an amazing local place that I would rather try and find and spend time with friends vs Olive Garden/Outback/Red Lobster etc.

Entirely possible. And that's even better of course. But not at all my point.

For lots of people, especially older people, it strikes me that it's way more about the company than the restaurant.
My take is that if you wanted to find a factor connecting people that are more about company and less about the restaurant, age isn't the one I would choose (but that may be completely true also).

If you asked me to pick a trait that would define company over food, I would say look at volume of visits.
People who eat out a lot, in my experience, are more casual about the actual nuts and bolts of the meal. Less likely to be eyeballing the server if something is taking longer than expected. Ask anyone in the industry, they'll take customers who eat out regularly all day long over noobs.

But really, the biggest factor is probably quality of company.

People go out to dinner with people they don't like-- all the time. Often, they are related to them. For them, the company sucks, so the restaurant better be great. Tables where the people aren't speaking to each other? Brutal

Best sour I've had, not that I've had a ton.

We actually had it on tap at this cocktail bar in Aspen, but rarely sold it.

Basically, we bartenders were drinking it all, and those little kegs would be gone quick, and sometimes hard to get, so everyone kind of silently agreed to not sell it to the guests, so we could drink it after work.

My Hooters is closing. 😢

This is a franchise I just can't believe is still around. The food was never any good - passable, but it wasn't the reason folks went - and after the #MeToo movement, I would have thought Hooters et al were on death's door.
I'm a cynic but I'll be surprised when there's a movement that overcomes attractive people dressed attractively serving other people anything as a business concept.

Why do you think Hooters has been closing restaurants? They have gone from 333 locations in 2018 to 293 at the end of 2023 and continue to close this year. What do you think is the reason?

I think it's because they are still wearing uniforms from the 1980's

On the Craft Beer angle, I do wonder where the ceiling is.

The local breweries here in Knoxville average $7 or $8 a beer a pint.

A regular cocktail in regular bars are in the $12-15 range. I wonder if beers will eventually get there?
I doubt it, unless hops prices really shoot up. $7-8 is a pretty standard price outside of the coasts.

Two things that really hurt the craft breweries in my area are wineries/distilleries, and legal dispensaries. The border city here has 28 licenses to sell pot.

Time is a flat circle.

Tried a new Spanish restaurant and it's become one of my favorites.

It's a share plate restaurant, you can tell where this is going.

We were a party of 5 and ordered a bunch of things to share. While we were ordering, the waiter told us how many items come in each order. In most cases, they came in threes or fours and for each one he asked if we wanted them to add an extra piece or two to match the party size. This wasn't that fancy a place either.

So don't go and tell me restaurants can't do this!

Tapas style? That’s kind of their business model, right?

Yes, but you'd be surprised how many places expect you to order a second plate if you want enough to cover your table. This kind of custom ordering to fit the party size is incredibly rare with the reason I've always been told being that kitchens are too busy to do custom orders.

This place seems to have figured it out.

Also, not all of the items were strictly tapas We ordered equal tapas, mains and sides, and were informed of quantities for each with options in most cases to modify. For example, we ordered a main rib dish and he said they go by weight but can add an extra rib or two for our party size.

Spent last week in Appleton, WI right on College Street. Gotta say, the bar scene is off the hook and the food was pretty decent. I wasn't picking up the bill because it was business but the pricing wasn't crazy. Fun little town to spend a few days.

Me: Hey, babe. I'm going to play golf with the boys tomorrow and go to lunch afterward.

Wife: Are you going to Hooters?! :handsonhips:

Me: Yeah, probably, it's right near the course. I'll wear my wedding ring, ok! jfc

You don't see the difference between JUST guys going to Hooters and families with wives/moms?
We actually just went to one last weekend together at John's Pass Marina in Treasure Island. She loves their buffalo shrimp.

I'll admit to there being a double standard. Men and Women are different. I doubt the concept of "Bulge" would do well.

Well, your wife is pretty chill if Hooters is a place she likes to frequent. Maybe my wife is the outlier, but I somehow doubt it.

Anybody else take their wives to Hooters on the reg?

This actually came up in our house last night when discussing wings. I argued that after you get over the the name/concept, it’s really not much differ at than going to any other bar in the summer where young women wear shorts and a skimpy top.

I don’t like breaded wings and I’d happily not go to see you fat American girls in Ill-fitted clothing.

If there were pre 1990s I might have a different answer.

I used to know the western US regional from hooters. Because of him, I used to hold our drafts at hooters. He would dial us in ridiculously. Couple hundred bucks for all 12 of us, just take care of the girls. One year a guy dropped out last minute. Sunny lubick blow up doll answered my plea from here and joined us. He had just hit the pick 6 at Del Mar. good times.

You can order them "naked." Without breading. It's also great schtick when you order them hot, naked, and extra wet in a super old man creep way. They love that.

We were in NYC last week. Upper West Side. Lunches and dinners seemed pretty much in line with what we pay out here in the Twin Cities. Almost always between 75-100 bucks for the 4 of us (higher end if there was a drink or 3). But groceries. Holy ****. We spent 54 dollars for a 1/2 gallon of Oat Milk, a couple kombuchas, a box of bars, and a few apples

100%. And this is rule 2 after make money. Chains exist and thrive because they are consistent That is number 1 when expanding. The Big Mac must be the same in BFE or Korea. Same with any menu item at any chain.

The first time I ate a TGIFridays was in Kuala Lumpur(I spent weeks there and wanted some american food), and even though I have never eaten at a TGIFridays in the US, i can say what they serve over there is different than what they serve here.

But, i bet they are consistent across Asia.

I’m sure some menu items are completely different. But the ones in common are as close as they can make them.

Everyone in Houston should eat at the below restaurant. They offer free tea and multiple free soups. They serve do serve sushi, but they also serve japanese comfort food like katsu don. All at an extremely reasonable price.

My office is a block off bellaire and is right on beltway 8 frontage, ie right in the heart of china town. I have eaten at almost all of the popular restaraunts and this is one of the cheapest. The only downside is if you go on the weekend you have to be there right when it opens at 11:15-11:30 to get a table.

On a combo business/getaway with my wife. Since I was going to be near one of her aunts she decided to come and visit for a couple of days.

She took the car today and I stayed at the hotel to do some work. Red Lobster next door to the hotel. Went over for some lunch. Cheddar Biscuits and crab legs for the over priced, awful chain restaurant, lunch win!

Nice, I'll have to check that out. So many great places out there I just rarely take the trek to new Chinatown. I am lucky to live a few minutes from one of the best Sushi deals in town though (Oishii). Their HH is legendary but normal dining hours are a bargain as well.

Houston is chock full of great Asian places especially Vietnamese. I think I posted in here previously that I found the cheat code for cheap and quality dining is normally locally owned Asian spots. It's like that in NYC as well. Chinatown was always a bargain compared to the rest of Manhattan.

It's been a few years but I used to go to this place called House of Bowls that made outstanding varieties of noodles dishes. Some classic and some Americanized, all delicious and at a good price. Only went with my friend who could accurately order lol.

I have googled that place a few times, but their website is just a virus infected scam website so i have never been. There are a few places in chinatown that have a good rating on google/yelp with thousands of reviews and a scam website.

Holy **** olive oil is expensive these days. Gotta get myself to Costco
Whole Foods sells a big container pretty good price. I use that for cooking, and get a higher quality when on sale for salads, breads, etc.

Costco prob cheaper but don't have access to it.

I don't, but only because we don't have one. Here in Lynchburg, VA, a Hooters would never fly (they've tried many times). I've always sworn it must be the largest city in America (80K people) without a Hooters or a strip club (and never had and never will).

But the first meal I ever had with my wife was at a Hooter's. In Nashville. Bunch of people with the company we used to work with all went.

Also, back in the day, she loved strip clubs too. I grew up going to them, but never liked them. I could never get it out of my mind how much they must hate this.

But we did go to strip club together one time, too. Also, in Nashville. As I said, I don't like strip clubs, but my wife absolutely loved it. Especially Ainsley. I won't speculate on what might have happened if I weren't there, but they had a helluva connection and a great time.
Oh, and to answer the question, no.

But Hooter's will always hold a special place in my heart.

And while I haven't had it in a couple decades, I swear I really did like the wings. The breaded wing may not be the best option, but back then (and now I'd assume), it didn't seem like any other place was doing it.

Dietz and Watson Virginia ham is $12.49 a lb at my local grocery store now.

$12.49 a lb ?!?! For lunch meat?!?!

Then we walked to the back and bought a CAB porterhouse on sale for $9.99 a lb.

Is this for real? smh

Probably migrant labor that works the slaughterhouse that keeps the cost of meat from rising as fast.

Deli lunch meat is very pretentious and priced as such.
