Results: Hype Over Gut? (1 Viewer)

Ever get a player on your team who is getting a lot of love/hype that you don't necessarily see, but you decide to get on your team anyway? Someone your gut has no read on (or a bad read on) but people you respect rave about? Who are they and how did they turn out?

For me this year, it's Hakeem Nicks. I honestly am not drinking the Kool-aide, but after an unpredictable draft, he ended up being one of my starting WRs and if he doesn't pan out, I don't like the depth behind him. Hopefully I'm wrong and others are right about him supplanting Steve Smith as the go-to-guy (I got him much cheaper). But if he does, and I benifit, it's not because it was a great pick, it's just because the other options available all looked as murky and Nicks, the only thing seperating him was the rave reviews from FBGers.

Nicks is the new Plax. You won't be disappointed.
 Nicks is a beast. He put up most of his numbers last year while hurt and that wasn't even being a starter the whole year. He should be good for at least 1,000 yards and a bunch of loooooooooooong TD's.

If the player is hyped and I'm not drinking the Kool-aide, I'm not drafting him on my team. It usually means he is over-valued.

Hakeem Nicks seems to fit for me too

I know this thread isn't supposed to be about Nicks, but I feel the exact same way about him. I have him in a few leagues, but don't have a ton of confidence in him.

I drafted McCoy and Jennings, but I'm not too thrilled about either. Thinking I should have gotten Forte instead of McCoy 2 rounds later as I always have much better luck following my instincts.

I love Nicks and was upset that I couldn't grab him on any of my teams.

I was pretty meh on CJ Spiller coming into preseason (as a redraft prospect that is, not in dynasty) but the ever growing hype® train thread piqued my intertest. I didn't reach for him IMO (got him at 6.11 as an RB3), but in this case, I hope the hype is more correct than I was.

Chris Johnson might have been the most hyped player ever on this board and that turned out ok. Harvin last year panned out.

I have Jamaal Charles in one league and if you've read the Charles thread, you know how I feel about him. But he slipped and I couldn't ignore the value.

Define much. No one has seen him play a whole lot, he was a rookie last year and hurt/backup part of the year. He has no real NFL track record yet which is much of the reason why I don't have a solid feel for him one way or another. I have seen him play a few games but WRs can look great in some games (See that other Giants WR Cruz) and you need more convincing before you feel comfy with them. I'm not saying Cruz = Nicks, I understand Cruz did his stuff against backups, but the point is there. Again, this thread is not about Nicks though.

my point is that i think you are nervous because you havent seen him play much. I have seen him on tv with both the tarheels and the giants and he is the real deal. he is not just a first round pick, but also a first round talent and there is a big difference.

Hope so, but the thread isn't about Nicks exactly
Given the choice I generally go with gut. There's so much hype over so many during preseason that sometimes that's the only difference there is when the time comes for drafting. As for Nicks--missed him in my drafts--but that would have been a case of both hype and gut; was actually targetting him since last year.

I had the exact opposite problem. Nicks kept slipping in every one of my drafts to a point where I couldn't pass him up. I own him in all 5 of my leagues.FBG EXPERT RANKING: WR15DRAFT #1: WR15 (20-team league so I had to grab him early; he wasn't going to wait around another 33 picks)DRAFT #2: WR27 (gone already = Santana Moss, Pierre Garcon, Braylon Edwards and Austin Collie; draft in early August)DRAFT #3: WR18DRAFT #4: WR18 ($14 in an auction draft)DRAFT #5: WR20

This year I was not feeling Mendenhall at all. But he fell in our draft all the way to me at 3.05 (12 team redraft, .5 PPR); felt like I had to take him. Unfortunately, taking him meant I needed to grab WRs after that & missed out on Foster even though I was targeting him pre-draft.

Last year I steered clear of Forte and glad I did. This year I didnt want Sidney Rice but he kept ending up on my team. We all know how that turned out. :goodposting:

Generally I'm wrong. If a guy is getting enough play on these boards that he's being "hyped", there's a legit reason for it.
Yes, see Steve Slaton 2009

This is kind of a good general point, as there are lots of players who I rarely ever see other than in highlights. They might be better, or suck more, than the box scores tell me. How many TB, Cleveland, etc. geographically distant games have I seen in the past 3 years? If it's not MNF or vs. GB/Chi I might not watch some of my fantasy players (or free agents) at all.Which is where "hype" - or, ideally "discussion" - fills in some gaps for me. But it's still a personal judgment call. I don't feel too nervous about any of my high picks but I have to start Santana Moss on a couple teams. I am hopeful, but not exactly full of hope.
