RIP Anthony Mason (1 Viewer)

Played a perfect combination of old/white and new/black basketball and i always respected and enjoyed the hell out of that. RIP -

Much loved at the Garden. I Know he's been working around NYC and was one of the more ubiquitous Knicks alum, but he was popular anywhere he played. He always had a great smile and phenomenal work ethic.

Gained 100+ pounds after he hung it up. Pissed away $40M in career earnings. Too bad, he was a good guy.

One of my favorite players on some of my favorite teams. Those Knicks teams were my childhood. Charles Smith missed 18 shots from under the basket (and got fouled on all of em! ) Ewing should have dunked it.

Mason never did me wrong. R.I.P. big fella.

I used to hate the Riley Knicks with a passion, but Mason was a bad dude and a unique player. RIP to him, 48 is way too young to go.

My favorite basketball player ever. It was never as fun for me before or after he left the Knicks. Not hearing much about him this week I was hoping he was getting better. Loved his game loved his Attitude.

I absolutely hated the Knicks teams he was on but always respected him. Really fun to watch.
My sentiments exactly. Had mad respect for Mase, Ewing and Oak. How could you not appreciate the effort these guys put in every night. So ironic that he died from a bad heart.

My friend just called and said he had seen Mason a few months ago in NYC and said he was huge. Insanely obese.

sucks
Supposedly he was up 150 lbs since his playing days.

I was still a big fan... Those mid 90's Knicks with Starks, Ewing (what's his legacy anyways? Curious what others think here), Smith, Oakley, Anthony, Hubert Davis, etc were a lot of fun to root for.

:(

Also a fan of that team. Mase and especially Oakley (only jersey of any kind I've ever bought) brought the combo of skill and heart I always respected.

RiP

Ewing's going to have a great legacy imo. One of the top 3 college players all time. One of the top 10 Centers all time. Sad he didn't win a championship. He really deserved to.

Its funny most Knicks loved Mason, Starks, and Oakley but hated Ewing
I'm kinda in this bucket... Ewing always wanted to be a jump shooter and it was infuriating! I like him and respect his career, but he is nowhere near my top whatever list of favorite players. I feel like this is almost the standard for NYK fans.

Man those were great times for Knick fans. 1993 was the pinnacle. After years of trying, the Knicks finally trumped the Bulls for best record in the league, had home court advantage and even won the first two games of the series. That team sure had swagger. Starks was young and brash and wasnt scared of Jordan. Pippen was initimated by Mason and Oakley. Ewing was in his prime. And Riley had the team believing they could not lose in the Garden. All signs were pointing to a championship and then Charles ####### Smith missed four layups in three seconds and it all came crubmbling down.

RIP Anthony Mason. The toughest guy on the court and a unique basketball talent :( Gone but never forgotton.

On what planet was Mason a "good guy"...? Go look up his lengthy arrest record and get back to me. Though he did play the best defense of any woman-beater who ever lived.
:lmao:

Yeah, we like our heroes spotless, blameless, without sin and pure as the driven snow amirite?

Seem to recall a bar fight here & there. WGIF? You sitting on the Bema Seat?
Yep, a bar fight here and there. Not much else.

Look, we enjoyed watching the guy play. But people don't become saints just because they stop breathing.

I never had a problem with Ewing- just liked Oakley and Mason more.

I only saw a few Knicks games live- one of them was the playoff game vs the Heat where Van Gundy ended up on the court wrapped around Mourning's (IIRC) legs like a tiny baby. It was fantastic. The look on Mourning's face.. :lmao: IIRC, it was Oakley who carefully extricated him from the scene (like a baby)

Just watched the Charles Smith play again, dude was gangraped!
He was a six-ten power forward, not a six-two shooting guard. He should have stuffed it, not tried to lay it up. Even if he was fouled, that balances out the atrocious foul called on Scottie Pippen during the 1994 series.
Yes he should've, undeniable... However, it also can't be denied that he should've gone to the stripe for two shots...

Regardless, this goes down as the worst play in NYK history!

1988 was not a good year to be a member of the Portland Trail Blazers -- Anthony Mason, Jerome Kersey, Kevin Duckworth, Caldwell Jones, Maurice Lucas, all dead.

Mason had a strange, but effective offensive skillset given his figure.

I don't know who was stronger - him or Oakley, but those 90s Knicks had one of the greatest defensive frontcourts of all time.

:( RIP.

I know next to nothing about the NBA, but I was about to make a comment about how strong the Knicks were on defense back then with Mason & Oakley up front, then Popinski beat me too it. Was that the last time the Knicks were any good?

Sad.

Kind of scary to me that a lot of them died due to bad hearts. You would think after running up and down the court all those years that they wouldn't have heart problems.

:goodposting:

World's a better place without the likes of Anthoby Mason in it.

I've never really been a basketball fan but that Knick team was good. Fun year with them going to the Finals same year as the Rangers won it.

My favorite player was probably Mason.

RIP

Please save the holier than thou condemnations for another thread. Plenty of sadness and eulogies given for those who fell far short of a perfect life. This is not the appropriate place.

Thanks

Wrong. Great defense by the Bulls. All clean blocks.

And, watch Ewing on this play. He falls downs and watches all the action from the floor.

Made the Finals in the strike-shortened '99 season. Lost to the Spurs.

How are they not clean? No body contact, no hacking on the arms. Might have hit him on the hand a couple times, but the hand is part of the ball when it's on the ball.

I'm guessing you're a Knicks fan?
