Packers | Thomas Busy LearningMon, 5 Sep 2005 21:31:55 -0700Green Bay Packers newly added LB Robert Thomas will be brought up-to-speed as quickly as possible. He's an option to become the permanent starter at weak-side linebacker as the season unfolds. Not sure if I would start him in Week 1, but I think he could have found a real nice spot here. He may be on a lot of waiver wires and would be a good candidate to pick up early and stash away for future use as he begins to feel more comfortable in this defense.

Good catch. What did the WLB produce last year for the Pack?
I think the WLB last year was Navies and he did ok. But I think he may have not played all 3 downs - Lennon may have swapped in and out. And I think Diggs was the SLB. The leading tackling LB was Barnett as MLB. I'm not sure on this. I believe that the talent level might have now increased with Thomas but GB's defense isn't in very good shape yet. My 2 cents. Those with the stats might be able to help out more!

I had the same thought and picked him up yesterday. I'll have to start him if Lehman can't play this week....

I think Diggs was the WLB last year, while Navies was the SLB. Diggs had 80 tackles (63 solo and 17 assists) in 14 games last year.

You are probably right. I watch them all the time should remember who was who ;) The stats should hold up that Diggs was the WLB

Was Diggs also the WLB in 2002 and 2003? His stats from those seasons and from 2004 were very consistent:

Approx 65-70 solo tackles, 15 or so assists, a sack or two, an INT or two, and an handful of passes defensed. He seemed to decline last year but that may have been due to the injuries you were referencing.

There's also the thought that he could replace Barnett at MLB, with Nick moving over to WLB. Not sure if I see this happening during the season though.

Thomas sucked hard in STL. What points to success in GB?

We're talking fantasy IDP here. Scott Fujita was no world beater in Kansas City but he was a solid LB in IDP.

I know; his fantasy numbers rendered him unstartable. Same with any GB linebacker not named Barnett. It is definitely a situation to keep an eye on, but I don't see him being a viable fantasy option unless your LB corp is truly pathetic.

So did Tommy Polley and look for him to have a great year in BALTTom

Thomas was either injured or not in good graces with Martz. I believe GB will end up using Thomas at WLB where he can make plays without having to call the defensive alignments, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the middle.I was fortunate to find Lenon on our WW and picked him up, so now I've got the starter, whomever it may be.

Guys who play beside Ray Lewis only seem to have good fantasy years when he goes down.

Based upon Diggs' numbers over the last several years in that defense, that position generates stats that fall in the 45-55 range among LB's, which is enough to be a LB4 or primary backup in deeper leagues depending upon how many you start. No one's arguing he's going to be a world beater, however he's worth a roster spot.

What happened to Raynock Thompson? I thought he was the starting WLB in Green Bay.

Thompson was cut.

Sherman - Diggs won't play Sunday
GREEN BAY - Although Na'il Diggs is listed as questionable, Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman said the veteran linebacker will not play in Sunday's regular-season opener at Detroit. That means the Packers will start longtime backup Paris Lenon at the sam (strong-side) linebacker spot, Nick Barnett at mike (middle) and probably newly acquired Robert Thomas at will (weak-side). Undrafted rookie free agent Roy Manning is also an option at will.Diggs, who tore the MCL in his left knee during an Aug. 8 training-camp practice, did not practice Wednesday. And during an interview for a Q&A that will run in Sunday's State Journal, Sherman said Diggs won't play."Paris would step in," Sherman said.
