through four games for bradford...

looking through the lens below of QBs that started more than half the season (except for bradford) in past five drafts, and going further back, three other former #1 overall picks (elway, aikman & manning)... manning does seem to be the best approximate fit for mapping on bradford's rate of development SO FAR...

maybe not entirely coincidentally, manning was the comp player that bradford evoked for some scouts, due to, among other things (stature, pocket presence, intelligence, leadership and other intangibles, etc, etc, etc), his uncanny, almost spooky accuracy...

2010 - bradford.... 58% completion percentage, 944 yards, 6 TDs, 6 INTs, 72 QB rating, 10 sacks, 0 fumbles (prorates to about 3,800 yards & 24 TDs)

2009 - stafford... 53%, 2,267 yards, 13 TDs, 20 INTs, 61 QB rating, 24 sacks, 4 fumbles (10 games - prorated about 3,600+ yards & 21 TDs)

sanchez... 53%, 2,444 yards, 12 TDs, 20 INTs, 63 QB rating, 26 sacks, 10 fumbles (15 games)

freeman... 54%, 1,857 yards, 10 TDs, 18 INTs, 60 QB rating, 20 sacks, 9 fumbles (10 games - prorated about 2,900 yards & 16 TDs)

2008 - ryan... 61%, 3,440 yards, 16 TDs, 11 INTs, 87 QB rating, 17 sacks, 6 fumbles (16 games)

flacco... 60%, 2,971 yards, 14 TDs, 12 INTs, 80 QB rating, 32 sacks, 11 fumbles (16 games

2007 - edwards... 56%, 1,630 yards, 7 TDs, 8 INTs, 70 QB rating, 12 sacks, 4 fumbles (10 games - prorated about 2,600 yards & 12 TDs)

2006 - leinart... 51%, 2,547 yards, 11 TDs, 12 INTs, 74 QB rating, 21 sacks, 8 fumbles (12 games - prorated about 3,400 yards & 16 TDs)

VY... 66%, 2,200 yards, 12 TDs, 13 INTs, 66 QB rating, 25 sacks and 11 fumbles (15 games)

cutler started just five games

john elway... 47%, 1,663, 7 TDs, 14 INTs, 55 QB rating, 28 sacks (11 games - prorated about 2,400 yards & 10 TDs)

troy aikman... 53%, 1,750 yards, 9 TDs, 18 INTs, 55 QB rating, 19 sacks (11 games - prorated about 2,600 yards & 13 TDs)

peyton manning... 56%, 3,739 yards, 26 TDs, 28 INTs, 71 QB rating, 22 sacks (16 games)

P Manning was top 10 his first year. This is a passing league now and Bradford is around #15 right now. Not at Manning's level yet his 1st year. but close. P Manning took less sacks which he's best known for.

My favorite QB prospect since Manning. He's a shot in the arm for that franchise. Reason for fans to go to the games now.

You couldn't really draw up a better rookie schedule for him to have. (11 of 16 games are in domes. Inclimate weather looks only to be a possible factor in a couple games). I don't think he'll lead the Rams to that division (as bad as it is), but it really wouldn't be shocking. May not be saying much to some, but he's already the best QB in the division IMO.

top 10 by what measure?bradford is 12th in yards and tied 8th (with five other QBs) in TDs... he is pacing for an alarming 40 sacks...to invert your logic, being a passing league now, wouldn't that make it harder for bradford to separate himself from his peers (orton is pacing to break marino's yardage record of 5,000+, which brees fell a few passes short of last year), making his achievement for a rookie as impressive in some ways?in other words, wouldn't it have been easier for a pure passing prospect (which manning surely was, and bradford is) to put up top 10 numbers relative to his peers a decade or so ago, than now?

what impresses me most about Bradford is his ability to elevate the play of his teammates.

i didnt think he'd be this good, this fast.

he's a rare breed...and as a 49er fan struggling to watch Steve DeBerg II, I'm jealous.

good point...i didn't think he would be this good this fast, either... presumably, nearly everybody fell into this category...he exudes and radiates calmness and confidence on and off the field (reportedly including the huddle)...that couldn't help but inspire & energize his teammates on both sides of the ball...* some other intangibles that bode well... passion for the game, the desire to be great and the intensity to sustain a high level of play (within a game, from game-to-game, etc.)...irvin has said repeatedly bradford reminds him of aikman, if we are talking of other comps... tempermentally (they both seem very even-keeled, not getting too high or low, regardless of surroundings, circumstances, situation) and mental toughness-wise, they do seem similar... also a very similar highly catchable ball... aikman was one of the best in his era (marino was great, warner more recently), bradford already looks exceptional in this department... that HAS to help with things like completion %, sustaining drives, etc...

absolutely. his intangibles are off the charts for a rookie. last guy I rememeber like this in his first year has a horseshoe on his helmet and does directv commercials.

i think a qbs body language tells so much about him. you nailed it. by comparison, look at Alex DeBerg mope off the field.

For comparison's sake, using the stats above from early October after Bradford had played his first four games and using them to compare with Colt McCoy.Sam Bradford St. Louis Rams

58% completion percentage, 944 yards, 6 TDs, 6 INTs, 72 QB rating, 10 sacks, 0 fumbles

18 rushes for 33 yards 0 TDs

Colt McCoy's numbers after four starts:

Colt McCoy Cleveland Browns

64.6% completion percentage, 734 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 85.2 QB rating, 9 sacks, 0 fumbles

16 rushes for 48 yards 1 TD

Bradford has faced:

1. ARI

2. @OAK

3. WSH

4. SEA

@DET

SD

@TB

CAR

McCoy has faced:

1. @PIT

2. @ NO

3. NE

4. NYJ

They both were 2-2 after their first four starts
