Rookie RB Rankings - PPR Format (1 Viewer)

The analysis around the web on rookie rankings for PPR seems light. At the crux of the issue is CJ Spiller. I am basically torn between Sigmund Bloom's praise of CJ Spiller's playmaking and receiving skills and Matt Waldman's reservations about his running style.

Which two backs would you choose for your team from among Mathews, Best and Spiller in a PPR format? A few points to consider:

1) If Spiller is merely a slightly less effective runner than Mathews, does that make him the pick to click for PPR purposes? In a PPR league, Reggie Bush was the #10 RB in his first and second years. Looking at Maurile Tremblay's redraft projections, Spiller is the #20 RB in standard but #11 in PPR, and he could get more than 47 catches.

2) Can Mathews really catch 40 balls like Norv Turner says? With Darren Sproles and Shawnbrey McNeal lurking in the background?

3) Since Best is both a quality runner AND a quality receiver, does this make him the best prospect?

Sounds like you have two top 3 rook picks and are looking for help. I'll bite, and say go with Mathews first and Spiller second.

I see the top 4 as two tiers.

Dez/Mathews - depending on your required lineups and priorities / philosophy, and even your team needs, either should be #1.

Best/Spiller - I see these two as essentially equal. There's a reason Spiller went 21 spots higher and it's not just because the Bills suck at drafting. Although I think Spiller is closer to Reggie Bush than Chris Johnson, few players have Spiller's explosiveness. Best has similar potential to be huge, but IMO he won't be quite the PPR machine Spiller could be.

:goodposting: I traded for the 1.04 in one league and don't really care which of the 4 drop to me.

In one league I'm in, D.Thomas went before Spiller and Best, I was surprised by the pick but everyone has their own opinions.

I think it really depends on your specific team situation and needs.

If you are in a "win now" and have the luxury (like I do) of having a top 3 pick I think you should go with the best blend of talent and player situation.... which in this case I believe is Mathews. He should be a very productive back for a long time but should have a great rookie season on a talented San Diego team.

If you are looking for a long term solution I think Spiller has the more upside if his team situation improves... but might not pay dividends till a few years.

Detroit has more quality options in the passing game to throw to, so Best may find his catches hit a ceiling whereas Buffalo is severely lacking in quality receiving options in the passing game. Spiller should be far more frequently targeted then Best will be (assuming that Spiller assumes the primary RB job in Buffalo)

Short term you gotta look at Mathews. Long term I like Best and Spiller more depending on whether or not Det and Buf can get their acts together. Det seems on the right track. Best could be a steal this year in PPR.

Possible, scary to think but Best may be in a position to score more touchdowns as Lions O > Buffalo O.FWIW, Best fell to 1.04 and I'm thrilled.

for this year spiller has a lot of competition at rb - he will be used - i imagine 10-12 touches / catches a game

i think best will see 15-20 as he has no competition there
