Russian Doll (netflix series) (1 Viewer)

I did a google search and did not see a topic for this excellent Netflix show.  

Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne stars in this comedy-drama (eta: emphasis on drama IMHO) series as Nadia, a young woman who is on a journey to be the guest of honor at a party in New York City. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same event and dies at the end of the night each time -- only to awaken the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened. In addition to starring, Lyonne co-created the show with "Saturday Night Live" alum Amy Poehler (!)and serves as a writer and director for the Netflix original series.

I saw season 2 was going to be released this past Wednesday so I went back and re-watched season 1 which I thought was excellent upon 1st viewing and was even more impressed on the 2nd go-round.  There was a lot that I did not catch on 1st viewing.  

I was stumped on where they were going to take it with Season 2 and was pleasantly surprised.  Not as good as the 1st season, but still worth a watch.  No comment on viability of a 3rd season as I don't think spoilers work any longer.

I really liked S1. Watched the first episode of the second season, went in thinking I didn’t know of the show needed a second season. Still haven’t made up my mind about that but after one episode I’d say I like the direction they are taking and regardless how it turns out the acting and aesthetics are things I am happy to return to regardless. 
 

I suspect an attempt at a third season might turn into an overstayed its welcome situation. 
 

How involved is Amy Poehler in both seasons?

Pretty much the reason I've never waded into what I assume is a ####show of a thread.

BTW, having seen season 1, did you catch some/all of the changes each time she and Alan went back through a particular location?  I missed a lot of it the first time through.

fwiw, it's not at all a ####show. actually a good spot with good discussion and sharing of shows that are out there. 

the only issue there is that sometimes it's difficult to generate ongoing discussion for shows... especially ones where the entire season is dropped at once.

somebody was just talking about Russian Dolls in there... but hopefully this thread can generate more continuous discussion about the show.

was having lunch with an old college friend who relayed that one our classmates (my friend is in TV, and this is also her good friend) is one of the directors for Russian Dolls too... and with it being filmed in my hood, I'm even more excited to see S2.

I'll take your word for it, but I don't see wading through discussions on other shows to get to the one(s) I'm interested as particularly rewarding.  That seems like an incredible waste of time.

that's definitely the case (eta- wading through discussions... but "incredible waste of time" is hyperbole that doesn't apply any more than it applies to the FFA in general). I will skim/skip through if it's something I'm definitely not interested in, or a poster who's tastes I know don't overlap with mine.

what it's best for is information about new shows and recommendations. I learned about a bunch of great shows (Mr Inbetween at the top) from that thread that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. also gave some shows a second shot that didn't originally grab me that other guys later recommended more highly. I'm fairly certain I watched Russian Dolls because of that thread.

OK, so it isn't a waste of time for you.  That's great.

I see it as akin to lumping all of the AMC shows together in one thread (e.g., the Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul).  I suppose you could skip the parts you're not interested in (for me it would be TWD).  And I suppose I might stumble on one that might pique my interest (for example The North Water, a show I've never watched but could see popping up in an all-AMC thread).  

But the best thing about single show threads is you can quickly determine what's of interest.  I've gotta believe there are FFA denizens scrolling past a show that has so few comments.  Of course a few might pop in and read the description and be intrigued.  Not going to happen with a catch all thread, at least not without wading through everything else.

Liked the first season and wife enjoyed it too; we're always looking for shows that cross over for us so psyched to give this a shot. 
I do remember at the end of last season thinking if there was another season it could wear out its welcome with all the Groundhog Day stuff, hopefully they keep it fresh.

Second season OK, not as good as the first. Natasha Lyonne can be a bit much, not sure if a third season would make sense. The way her character just keeps talking as if everyone else understands her perspective is weird. Like, you've been placed in an asylum and are in a straightjacket having your mental health evaluated, are you really going to keep talking about how you're stuck in someone else's body and time-traveling to the doctor who doesn't understand all the backstory? Stuff like that. And none of the characters really question what she's going on about. It's a little off-putting after a while. 

Spent a lot of time on kugerands which meant nothing by the end?

So if she's just going to mess around with the past, including traveling to the present to Google where to go next, did she just never consider looking up old winning lottery numbers or tell her grandmother to just buy Microsoft stock?

I watched the first 2 episodes of this some time ago.  I didn't think too much of it at the time and sort of set it aside.  It kept mocking me on my continue watching list, so I thought I'd give it another chance.  I watched episode 3, the show where Alan is introduced, and I got hooked.  The rest of the season captured my interest and the show seemed to get more complex and interesting.  Glad I went back to it.  I have only watched the first episode of season 2 thus far.  Again, I didn't care for it much, but I plan to push through at this point and hope it blossoms like season 1 did.
