Ryan Moats (1 Viewer)

Those of us who remember the excellent contribution Ryan Moats made last season for the Eagles - he looked extremely swift and dangerous, like Brian Westbrook Jnr, are rather surprised that it is the lumbering, fumble-prone Correll Buckhalter who's been getting carries rather than Moats in the absence of Westy.

Any Philly homers care to shed any light on why this is, and whether Reid plans to incorporate the mighty Moats into the offense more over the course of the season?

he isnt as good as Buckhalter in the running game, and Mahe is a better receiver/blocker . . .

He is explosive for sure. But he has a fumbling problem. Coach Andy doesnt trust him so much right now I believe. But after Buckhead fumbled twice near the goaline last week, that could all change.

You think he's kidding when he clearly shares the opinion of the Eagles coaching staff?
Are NFL coaching staffs infallible geniuses who never ever make mistakes?
No. But I'm pretty sure that to suggest their opinion is so wrong that it's a joke, and that you are so sure that your opinion is obviously correct, IS a mistake.
I think plenty of things that reputable NFL coaching staffs have done this season have been a joke, and we shouldn't be afraid of saying it. Almost everything that Oakland has done, for example. Now, do NFL coaches know better than us because they're $$$ employees of the NFL and we're a bunch of losers on the internet? Of course. But anyone with an interest in the sport has a right to second-guess them, in the way that anyone with an interest in politics has a right to second-guess our elected officials. Now, in this particular case, I think in terms of pure rushing ability, Moats is considerably superior to C-Buck, who's damaged goods and been out of the game for too long. But the previous poster may have been onto something when it came to blocking - my guess is Moats has protection issues - any Philly homers care to confirm this?

Last season Moats had 3 fumbles on 55 carries.

This season, in Philly's first preseason game, he had 2 fumbles in 7 carries.

This is what has kept him from having a larger role in the offense up until this point.

HTH.

Exactly, Moats has fumbling problems, and, as we all know, Buckhalter doesn't. :X

Anyway, the biggest beneficary of a Westbrook injury is McNabb, in my opinion.

Moats has a laundry list of problems:

-fumbles (as has been pointed out by previous posters)

-not smart enough to run the offense

-can't block

-not much size

He's never going to play when Westbrook is healthy because they're the same type of back only Westbrook is 100 times better.

And the reason he doesn't get playing time when Westbrook is hurt is because of all the mistakes he's made.

A couple local football guys in Philadelphia said he was very close to being cut this preseason and only the fact that he was a 3rd or 4th rounder as opposed to a 6th or 7th rounder when the Eagles drafted him a few years ago may have saved him for at least another year.

As a huge Eagles fan, and someone who visits their website daily, I disagree with almost everything in this post. Moats did have two fumbles in the preseason, but that isn't really weakness as far as the coaching staff is concerned. He is a actually a rather smart football player, considering the Eagle's offense is VERY hard for a RB to pick up, and he played quite well last year as a rookie. As far as size and blocking ability, they are slight question marks. As far as the statement about him almost getting cut...that simply isn't true. Andy Reid specifically stated that Moats was going to be on their roster regardless of his preseason injury. Last year, as a rookie, he showed tremendous potential, and will continue to improve. Buckhalter is the starter for a couple of reasons. He has played very well, he knows the entire offense, and he is very comfortable with the blocking assignments. Plus, when Moats was hurt, it was a significant setback and Buck just ran away with the job. However, Moats is regarded by the Eagles as the best pure runner on the team (although not nearly the versatile threat Westbrook is).

IIRC He did well his first and second starts and stunk up his 3rd and 4th. Probably shook Reid's confidence or made Reid figure he still needs some time to develop

Thanks for the explanation drinking aged force sensai.Sound like Moats lost the backup position to Bonghogger because of his preseason injury and is now part of RBBC until Westbrook returns to the lineup.
