safeties (1 Viewer)

i was wondering thoughts with the changes in the status of some safeties from those on the forum?

1.horton seems to be losing snaps and favor in d.c. but i haven't read whether he will or won't be the starting and full time strong safety after losing 30 snaps last week.

2. afalava has been named strong safety and payne to the bench with the return of manning to fs. lovie like afalava and he seems to be producing fairly well and with urlacher gone he might really get a bump in tackles although seems steelers like to pass more than is thought that they are a running team.

3. have read and agree that the ss spot for the lions is a plumb of a job much like the same in oakland. well seems pearson is gone and manuel has the job for now. seems like he and foote would be great starts this week and probably most week although manuel is not a lock if he doesn't produce at all.

4. i like butler of the rams but seem to be alone there. he is a quarenteed starter and has been doing more than well. he is familiar with the scheme and in fact was brought on board and payed starter money to be just what he is doing. the rams and how they will be facing teams running and running out the clock should give him many tackle opportunities along with atogwe but with butler spending much more time in the box.

i have afalava being picked up over horton on the ww in a few leauges and would like thoughts if i am off the mark or missing something as this can be cancelled.

I like Delmas more than any SS for the Lions. He is more a big play guy and if doesn't hurt himself by hitting too hard could be a top S.

Maybe Anthony can chime in and offer his insights here.

i hear his name alot as well (delmas) however, what kept me from drafting him was that i read a couple times on site that he is more of a reed (balt) type safety and will be used more or less in that role playing centerfield with the strong safety in the box more times than not. this indeed will give a few more big plays, much like reed last year, but in a tackle heavy league i was looking more towards the ss and if manuel is the man ???????? anyway that was my thought process although delmas had 6 tackles and 1 pd while manuel had 7 and 1 pd. not much to choose from there but again, only one game. any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A couple other safeties I'm curious to hear some thoughts about:

Quinton Mikkel in Philly... Could he produce as a top 10 DB this season? The opportunity is obviously there, does he have the talent to take full advantage?

Kenny Phillips in NY... Does he break out this season and begin to produce like Wilson did in the same role?

personally i think mikell can definitely bring you top ten production. i think that i hear that phillips is hurt now. also, he plays behind a pretty stout d. line which gobbles up alot of runners. of the two i'm going with mikell for sure

Manuel isn't very good and Delmas will have to clean up what he misses. I doubt he is the SS long. You can't compare Delmas to Reed either because Detroit is not the Ravens. Sean Taylor would be a better comparison.

Kenny Phillips is a very good player, but his knee has been bothering him and it may last the season

Maybe you're speaking from a fantasy IDP point of view, but if you're speaking in terms of NFL athletic talent and presence on the field, Delmas is no Sean Taylor. By the time he died, Taylor had turned into a game changer the way that Polamalu is, only he was even bigger and more athletic (which is ridiculous).

Neither of these are really true. Horton lost some snaps in week 1 (he was not on the field for 26 of the 66 snaps the Giants had, all in the 2nd half) because he made a mistake or two early and the coaching staff trust Doughty more to not blow an assignment (that's not to say they have no trust in Horton; they do). But that does not equate to losing favor. The coaches definitely know that Horton is twice the playmaker Doughty could ever be. Doughty may be more sound in his assignments at this point in his career, but he's not the athlete that Horton is.Horton is the starter and he put up some good numbers this week, playing the whole game (don't have the exact play numbers yet). He made key defensive plays in the 4th quarter of a very close game.

I'd answer yes to both, although Phillips is not necessarily going to produce as well as Wilson did, but he should break out.
