Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was arrested in Chicago on federal drug charges on Wednesday night, and the criminal complaint against him describes Hurd as regularly dealing large amounts of drugs in Chicago.

Can't get enough Bears information? ESPNChicago.com has all the latest on the Monsters of the Midway. Blog

Hurd allegedly attempted to purchase drugs from a supplier in North Texas, the location of where the case will be adjudicated. He was arrested by undercover agents at a Chicago steakhouse Wednesday night and was due to appear in federal court in Chicago Thursday.

"We are aware of Sam's arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it," the Bears said in a statement. "We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information."

The investigation into Hurd's attempt to buy large amounts of cocaine and marijuana began in July 2011 when he was still a member of the Dallas Cowboys and concluded when he personally met with a confidential informant at a restaurant on West Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago Wednesday.

At that meeting, Hurd told the informant that he wanted to buy "five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area," according to the complaint.

Hurd allegedly negotiated to pay $25,000 per kilogram for the cocaine and $450 per pound for the marijuana. The complaint says that Hurd "further stated that he and another co-conspirator currently distribute four kilograms of cocaine per week in the Chicago area, but that the supplier could not supply him with enough quantity."

After they agreed on a price, the undercover agent gave Hurd a kilogram of cocaine, according to the complaint. Hurd told the agent that he plays for the Bears and would get out of practice at 5:30 p.m., at which time he would make arrangements to pay for the drugs. According to the complaint, Hurd then took the drugs and got in his car. He was promptly arrested.

A free-agent acquisition by the Bears from the Dallas Cowboys in July, Hurd has played in 12 games this season primarily as a special-teams contributor. As a receiver, Hurd has posted eight catches for 109 yards.

I was thinking of all sorts of jokes I could make here ("Damn--I knew I was paying too much!!") but nothing really fits. WTF is he thinking???? WHY????

If you are a professional sports player you probably have a 10x greater chance of getting busted. Too many folks are going to know who you are and squeal on you the first chance they get. Stupidity runs high here.

Bears look bad on this too.

Apparently there was a known investigation when the Bears signed him.

Also keep in mind that the Bears are the sole source of income for the McCaskey family.

While their main talent has been being born into the family, they seem to put a high emphasis on character.

The McCaskey family was told of the news this morning and said, "Who?"

At least he didn't miss practice.

670 The Score in Chicago says they've learned authorities have a list of NFL Players who got their drugs from Hurd and it's in double digits.

Sam Hurd is the new honey badger. I want to cash an NFL check and also sell and traffic drugs at the same time and make it well known to tons of players that I do this. Sam Hurd don't care!

My favorite part:

Hurd hit authorities' radar in July when a confidential informant told police that a man was attempting to obtain four kilograms of cocaine for an unknown buyer in the Dallas area. That man was later stopped by police with $88,000 in a canvas bag. He said that the car and the money belonged to Hurd. Police confiscated the money, and Hurd later contacted authorities trying to get the money back.
So Hurd has $88K confiscated by the police, attempts to get it back (WTF?!), and then continues to deal drugs? He should be locked up on stupidity alone.

$450 for a LB of weed? That must be some terrible stuff.
Maybe he cuts it with field turf.
He was buying 1000 lbs so obviously the price per lb was negotiated down. Still could be terrible stuff but more than likely the quanity purchased lowered the asking price per lb.I use to smuggle that chit in the millennium falcon back in the day. I had really good secret compartments though.

All you who say he was dumb for doing this with all the money he makes as an NFL player, I think he was making more selling drugs.
Soooo because he makes more money selling drugs than he used to playing football, that makes him NOT a FOOL?It will be interesting seeing the list of NFL fools that thought buying Cocaine and Weed was a good idea. It will be even MORE interesting to see who the complete IDIOTS are that decided that buying it from Ex-NFL WR Sam Hurd was somehow a good idea. 1000lbs of dope? I figured when I saw it that Hurd got nailed with a misdemeanor.....this boy is getting LOCKED UP for a while now with the FEDS involved.

I haven't read this fact but if true it is really disturbing. I wonder what the ramifications will be if this turns out to include some of the big name NFL stars. Maybe this explains Marion Barber's brain cramps the last few weeks.

Personally I don't find this news shocking at all. I would be willing to bet at least 10% of players on each team smoke weed. The cocaine is another story but weed has been around sports for a long time (hell drugs in general have-of all kinds). I would assume even more so now as it has become much more ingrained in the culture. Having your players smoking it is one thing (at least in my mind), having them sell it is a completely different thing. Obviously, smoking it is still illegal but for the NFL to have one of it's players use their salary as seed money to be one of the largest drug dealers in Chicago is a PR and community nightmare.

underestimated imo

You can't fix stupid.

They might be smoking grass, but they aren't smoking the stuff that cost $650 a lb.

Barber played with him in Chicago and Dallas. One of his clients?

It would explain why he was attracted to the white line and ran out of bounds last week. :D

Seriously though it will be interesting to see if there are mass suspensions coming from this if the names on the list get released

According to a report from 670 The Score in Chicago, Bears WR Sam Hurd supplied drugs to NFL players numbering in the "double digits."Football was apparently a side job for Hurd, who was one of the top drug dealers in Chicago. His operation makes Nate Newton's 213 pounds of marijuana look small-time. Doing roughly $2 million worth of business every month, Hurd was looking to buy "5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area." We have to assume extended prison time is on the horizon, and Hurd's football career is over.
HOLY CRAP! 2million a month!! i guess football was just a side dish

what an understated thread title. Matt Jones and Janikowski got busted with drugs. Sam Hurd was popped with a literal TON of weed and a 5-10 kilos of blow.

I'll bet twice as many if not more NFL players do blow. They are physically tired (and sore all the time). Plus it metabolizes in 3-4 days, not months (which is why guys get popped for weed more.)

Well, technically that would be a figurative TON of weed. A short ton is 2000 pounds. And I think he only had 1 kilo of cocaine when he was arrested.

So how long until James Harrison gets suspended for this?

I'm sure Rog can find something there to pin on him.

Everyone can relax. He just hired Snoop Dog's lawyer, and the lawyer says he's innocent. So it must be true.

By the way, who is gonna supply Mike Martz' coke now?

I got kicked out of my first university after getting caught with 2 pounds of shrub. Paid for my entire education and then some by then, though.

I imagine this would be enough to get him kicked out of the NFL?

Or.... not.

I was thinking of all sorts of jokes I could make here ("Damn--I knew I was paying too much!!") but nothing really fits. WTF is he thinking???? WHY????
Seems like the plan went somethin like: I'm gonna work my ### off in college, make it to the NFL and then I''ll have the bankroll to be the biggest dealer in Chicago.

All you who say he was dumb for doing this with all the money he makes as an NFL player, I think he was making more selling drugs.
Yes, but the NFL has a better benefits package. Medical. Dental. Vision. 401k. Oh yeah, and not going to jail.

You'd think NFL teams would have seen this coming after Hurd played in the XFL with 'Kingpin' on the back of his jersey.

Note to self: If you have a multi-year contract worth 4 million, you really don't have to sell cocaine.

7/29/2011: Signed three-year, $3.97 million contract. The deal contains

$1.6 million in bonus money, including a $1.35 million signing bonus.

Another $1.18 million is available through incentives. 2011: $685,000,

2012: $865,000 (+ $150,000 bonus), 2013: $1 million (+ $100,000 bonus),

2014: Free Agent (HE MAY NOT BE THAT FREE)
