does this help with battery life?
Recharging it when it's still 1/3 full tends to diminish your battery capacity over time. So doing this won't make your battery life longer. But it will get shorter slower.
I've read this is a good idea when the battery is new, buy doesn't matter much after a few cycles. Dont know how true that is though.

Droid X owner and just ordered the SG3. While looking for online tutorials and reviews, found this video. It is very in depth and the reviewer has a non US accent but it covers every facet of the phone. I found it very helpfull and will be re-visiting it often when the phone arrives.

Former Droid X owner and received the phone yesterday. Overall I love the phone and couldn't be happier.

- The SG3 has a very slippery back compared to my Droid X and I have ordered a silicone case so it won't slide around inside my car.

- With my Droid X I found battery length was greatly increased by dropping the brightness settings to the lowest and have found the same with the SG3. Even at the lowest brightness settings, the SG3 is plenty bright for me. Droid X had a nice brightness widget making changes easy...have yet to find one on the SG3.

- I saved all my apps onto my SD card yet App 2 SD couldn't read it once put in the SG3. Not sure if phone issue or mine.

- I saw one poster in this thread comment on the camera not comparing to his former SG2. This camera is superior to the Droid X and I couln't be happier with it. Takes beautiful pictures and the stock camera app has alot of cool features.

- The pop out video feature is cool. You can watch a video and visit various pages while the video follows you.

- The stock calendar widget is great and gmail synced everything flawlessly.

- Only complaint I have is turning off 4G is not easy. You have to go through the settings and through a couple screens. Not sure why they didn't have a 4G toggle button with the others from the drop down screen.

I am really impressed with this phone and today will be my first full day of using it.

Pull down the notification bar. Brightness should be right under the Wifi, GPS etc toggles.

I'm not sure about App2SD and if it's been updated but I know that ICS doesn't allow apps on the SD card.

Does this depend on the carrier (Verizon) because I don't have it. My toggles from the drop down bar are Bluetooth, GPS, Sound, Mobile Data, Screen Rotation, Power saving, Airplane mode, Driving mode, and Sync.Underneath those is an "ongoing" banner with "Wi-Fi Off" (tap to turn wi-fi on). That is it for me...no brightness settings.

I supposed it could be carrier specific. Here's a pic of minehttp://img854.imageshack.us/img854/4523/screenshot2012072012080.png

Is this thing better than the 4s? I see lots of people in the thread liking it but is this when compared to older droid models? I have an iphone 4 and need to buy a new phone.
I've got the S3 for personal use and the iPhone 4S for work. Hands down, the S3. Even with the dropped call issues I've had so far. US Cell for the S3 and AT&T for the iPhone. Dropped calls on the iPhone are the norm. Never, ever had a problem on US Cell regardless of phone, so I'm confident I'll get this sorted out. But the S3 is better in every other facet. Screen size/clarity. Android = customize. Camera on the S3 is amazing fast. I didn't even realize I was taking pictures that fast until I checked the gallery to see that it was taking that many pictures. Plus 4G which Apple doesn't have yet.
How does the battery life compare?
Hard for me to give an accurate assessment on battery life. The iPhone is provided by my company and used primarily for email. I charge it maybe once or twice a week. The S3 is my everyday workhorse. I'm on a call or data pretty much all day. Have to charge it once mid day. Previous phone was Samsung Mesmerized, Gen 1 Galaxy. I would say the S3 has superior battery life to that phone.

Anyone having issues with dropped calls on the SIII?I'm in the Milwaukee area. Literally, 5-6 dropped calls in about a 30 minute span yesterday. I was not in a building, but in my car, on the interstate. Then again this morning, 2 dropped calls in my car on the way to work.
:hey: I grew up and went to HS in Oak Creek. My parents still live by St. Matts on Hwy 32. I'm in Bay View now and haven't had any issues so far with dropped calls on US Cellular. When you drop a call go to Settings > About device > Status and check the signal strength. -70dBm or better is great but anything below -110dBm to -120dBm is getting into dropped call territory. If it's low, then it's probably a carrier/tower issue. As for battery life, I went from 9am Sunday to 5pm Monday on a single charge. I would advise to turn ON WiFi whenever possible. 4G is the battery killer, especially if you aren't in a 4G area. Also, cycle the battery a few times until it is completely dead before charging
Class of 87 here. Moved away and back about 14 years ago.Took the phone back to US Cellular and they just swapped it out for a new one. No reception issues with this one. No dropped calls on the same stretch of interstate where the other phone would drop calls every 30-60 seconds. Now this phone rocks! Hands down over my work iPhone.

Yes each carrier has a "build" with some things that may be different, which is dumb. Not sure about ICS and memory card but I guess it could happen. I swear I have apps on my SD unless they got moved during the ICS upgrade...

We dropped Sprint a few years ago and I have been hobbling by on Virgin (ok) and StraightTalk (good service, horrible phones). I put my 87 year old parents on Consumer Cellular (elderly friendly phone, pricey service). I have not owned a "Smartphone" since a disastrous foray with a Windows ce model about 8 years ago. I also need two phones for employees.

I'm looking to sign up with sprint on the 1500 minutes/utld data plan for $170 for two plus $30 for each extra user. That includes to $10 per line data access charge, but not the 22 percent discount we get thru my wife's employer.

My question on the plan I probably use the lion's share on minutes, usually 1500/2000 a month. But the new plan is free on all cell to any cell calls and nights and weekends. I'm sure at least half my normal minutes are cell to cell calls and I think if I told my parents and employees to do their best to call cell to cell or wait until nights or weekends for personal calls, we might be able to get by with the 1500 min. cap. I cannot find out how much extra minutes cost I am sure its ridiculous.

As far as the phones I am pretty sure the Gal3 screen is big enough and intuitive enough that they can use it pretty easily. They may even find a few of the apps handy. I really doubt they will ever text or access teh internet. I am tempted to get them the Gal2 (50 vs 150 dollars), but I am thinking that since this is new account and I can get the 3's cheap, I should get those for everyone and if I lose or break mine, I can take one of theirs and get them a cheap replacement that will meet their needs. Since insurance costs 100 plus 50 replacement fee, it seems as if this would be a good alternative (assuming Sprint would let me change phone ownership within my family plan).

Any thoughts on any of the above would be appreciated it will cost me about $800 to get the five phones then about 200/mo.

First...Check here. Use the special sprint offer in the right column. Takes you here. I don't understand how you bundled your charges above, but it might be cheaper. $110 for 1600 minutes and unlimited data (3200 min = $150). $15 per additional line and $10 if they are smartphones. It's what I'm on. From talking with them, you can add a dumb phone for just the $15. I'm probably adding my mom and brother to our account under that.Get at least one extra G3 and get the dumb phones after that for your workers/parents. Probably the best bang for your buck. You can always swap phones between your phone numbers and add in a new phone if one breaks. Just has to be a Sprint phone. Used, new, purchased from them or not. Doesn't matter.

Hope that helps.

Spent most of the day in my car today running Pandora through my FM transmitter via the headphone jack. Every time I unplug the head phone jack (to use the phone for example) and then put it back in to listen to Pandora, the volume is going back to about %75. I have adjusted all the volume settings yet it refuses to lock the volume. I have tried to a couple volume locking apps with no luck.

Any tricks or ideas? I simply like my headphone volume to be near max (one click below) and I have to manually turn it up everytime I plug in and start Pandora.

thnaks do you have any idea if I could buy my phones elsewhere (like WalMart for $140) and still use that linked plan?

To get the phone discounts you almost always have to buy the plan directly from that retailer. So I doubt it. Not 100% sure, but pretty sure.

So have any of you guys done the insurance thing for your S3? $11/mo seems pricy.-QG
Nope, but I'm paranoid it's going to break. Problem with their policy is that it also has around a $100 deductible. Tired of waiting for Otterbox to release their covers in the US.

Off-topic slightly. Which transmitter are you using as I'm in the market for one to use with my S3.
iriver fm-100 By far the best one I have used over the years but becoming harder to find.

It does seem about as sturdy as a flower petal
Thought the same thing when I got my S2. Nine months later and its one of the sturdiest phones I've had. Its been dropped, slung, smacked, and knocked off tables so many times its silly, but it hasn't skipped a beat.Had a Neo hybrid case for a while, but it sucked so I replaced it with a body glove ($13 at Walmart). Great case.

How does the battery life compare?
im gonna piggy back on this. I currently have the iPhone4 on ATT and use a lot of data. How do other carriers compare to ATT in terms of internet speed and price. I have 2 iPhones on my plan and its about $156/month for about 1000 minutes (rollover) unlimited messaging and 2gb data each.

it seems to be a known issue with windows 7 64 bit. allegedly addressed with next patch or update.
I have no problems on my pc with windows 7 64 bit. Just transferred a boat load of pics from phone to computer last night.

Just got off the phone with US Cellular tech support. Going to exchange the phone for the second time. Still dropped calls and data and poor reception. 3rd times the charm, right?

Problem is no stores have the 16 gb in stock. One store is supposed to be getting 40 in tomorrow. Won't reserve one for me. Have to keep calling the store to see when they arrive.

So I was on the fence between this and the HTC One X. Both have very similar specs. Each has certain features better than the other. Pretty close match. Then AT&T announces they will drop the price of the One X on Sunday to $99. No brainer, right??

I pretty much love my One X (got it for $119 from Amazon), but definitely check out the threads (Google it) about the "abnormal" task switching. Basically, in order to optimize battery life, the HTC originally was very aggressive with killing apps that were not running, causing the app to have to reload when task switching. They addressed it a little with a software patch, and should address it further with another that isn't out yet (that is the speculation anyways.) You generally won't see apps killed that you are out of for a few minutes, but push 5-10 (i.e. a decently length phone call) minutes and the other apps will be closed (I notice it most with my podcast app while I'm driving. Take a phone call, it goes on pause, and sometimes I have to go relaunch it and press play, other times it picks right back up just fine.)Basically a heads up. It is a great phone, I really like it, but the above can be a bit of a irritant if you task switch a lot. I think $99 is a heck of a deal, and the difference between it and the S3 are so minimal that it is well worth $100.

Picking one of these two up this week- likely the S3. Going to look at them right now.

I'm switching from a BB Bold- how do you guys carry the S3 around?

Anybody?
Front pocket works fine for me. These phones are so thin I still have to check that I remembered to grab it.
You wearing Hammer pants? It IS thin, but damn... that's a big phone. I'll probably be putting mine in the front pockets too, if they're big enough.

Front pocket, back pocket, in my dress shirt sometimes. It's thinner than your bold so you shouldn't have a problem.

I don't like the front pocket of the dress shirt because anytime you lean over to pick something up your phone slides out of the pocket and crashes on the floor. I always stick with front pants pockets.

Why don't you guys just have your images automatically sync across all your devices as you take them? This whole plugging things in is for the birds. Especially if simple USB connections are throwing errors

Made the mistake one time of putting my previous phone in my front shirt pocket at a hockey game. When the Devils scored I jumped up and the phone disappeared (luckily it landed next to the ketchup in the person's french fry box 2 rows ahead and not in the ketchup.-QG
