Daniels: "For real?"

Aiyuk: "I swear."

49ers hold the cards so they have little reason to budge far on their offer to Brandon Aiyuk. He's already under contract. By nature of the way their roster is built, seems they're much better leveraged here than they were with Nick Bosa.

So the operative question: Will July-Sept deadline pressure encourage Aiyuk to move toward the 49ers' offer (with some reciprocal movement from them, of course), or is he willing to risk playing on the fifth-year option?

Brandon Aiyuk appears to suggest 49ers are playing serious hardball with claim about contract talks

Over the weekend, it was claimed contract talks between the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk had "stalled".

The All-Pro wide receiver's latest post on social media would appear to back up that assessment.

In a video on TikTok of a FaceTime conversation with Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, his close friend who was watching a 49ers game from last season, Aiyuk claimed the Niners "said they don’t want me back".

Aiyuk could well be being somewhat diplomatic with the truth. The 49ers have been vocal in their desire to sign Aiyuk to a long-term contract and are reported to have offered the 2020 first-round pick, who is set to play on his fifth-year option as it stands, a deal worth $26 million annually.

However, Aiyuk is said to want a deal that tops the four-year, $120 million contract Amon-Ra St. Brown signed with the Detroit Lions. That deal pays St. Brown an annual average of $28 million over the first three years.

That should not be too difficult of a gap for the 49ers to bridge, and Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently predicted San Francisco would sign Aiyuk too an extension paying him $29 million annually.

The reality is likely that the 49ers have told Aiyuk's reps they aren't prepared to pay what he is asking for right now. San Francisco would seem to be playing hardball and, with Aiyuk having no incentive to skip 2024 entirely and the Niners possessing the security of the franchise tag next offseason, they have the leverage to be able to do so.

Time is also on the 49ers' side, given they usually stick to a timeline of signing star players to extensions around training camp, and Aiyuk's social media claims don't change the likelihood that he is probably going to be a member of the Niners for years to come.

San Francisco's negotiations with star players can be long and tedious, and Aiyuk's TikTok post is a very good example of the tedium these contract sagas often bring before they reach an inevitable conclusion.

One constant this offseason: the 49ers have been vocal in their desire to sign Aiyuk to a long-term contract this offseason. That hasn't changed. Aiyuk posting this kind of stuff on the socials makes me like him a little less, but that's what players do these days. So annoying.

Aiyuk is a tough contract to settle on. I personally would not want to pay him what the Lion’s paid ARSB, I just do not think he is worth that money in this offense. It is difficult on both sides to find a middle ground. How would he fair being the number one on an offense that didn’t have such a good supporting cast? I think he could be fairly easily replaced for what they do in SF, and my guess is they feel the same to a degree. Good player needing a great contract…

The 49ers have signed first-round pick Ricky Pearsall to a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $12.5 million as the No. 31 overall selection.

The 49ers have now signed their entire 2024 draft class with over a month to go before training camp.

Aiyuk landed in the Bay Area in the last hour or so per his IG story. News tomorrow? Or maybe he's just going home.

Wel well well...Aiyuk meeting with the 49ers today.

Aiyuk said he's been taking negotiations personal and the offers so far have affected him, but he's meeting with the team today. Maybe they make some headway.

WR Brandon Aiyuk told @Realrclark25 that he's been taking negotiations "personal" and the offers so far have affected him. Aiyuk's first choice is to stay in San Francisco, but he is comfortable playing elsewhere if they are willing to trade him.

Aiyuk is meeting with the 49ers today, a meeting he requested.

Really? Doesn't makes sense when fans asks players to do something they wouldn't do with their career. This will get worked out. Yall are sounding like Lamar Jackson distractors last year. Relax.

49ers QB Brock Purdy Has FIVE Games With a 140+ QB Rating, Despite Only Starting 21 Games.

Patrick Mahomes - 4 in 96 starts
Jared Goff - 4 in 117 starts
Matthew Stafford - 3 in 206 starts
Josh Allen - 2 in 93 starts
Joe Burrow - 2 in 52 starts

I don't understand how this is not concerning.

If he's franchised and forced to stay, he will be disgruntled and be a potential distraction during what should be a championship opportunity.

He'd be a big pass for me fantasy=wise if this ends up happening.

I mentioned in the Aiyuk thread that Shanahan isn't afraid to put players he's not happy with in his doghouse, and he has another first round WR ready to go in Pearsall who, by the way, has looked great and has been building chemistry with Purdy while Aiyuk has been absent.

If Aiyuk isn't careful, they could trade him to a terrible team next season, but apparently, he'd rather make $4 million more on a crap team than stay on a contender, so whatever.

1. He’s still under contract
2. He requested a trade months ago as well.
3. Still not concerned,
I'm concerned. Barrows and Kawakami were on their podcast and suggested the 49ers haven't moved an inch over the last 6 weeks on their contract offers. As I've ranted about ad naseum in here, the 49ers' method of negotiating contracts is dumb. It feels like one of those issues Jed York still has his fingers on and therefore is being handled incompetently.

Worked out ok with Deebo.

It’s just how they do.

True though I think they almsot had a done deal witb the Lions to send Deebo to Detroit.

Did it? He had a bad season after signing that deal and SF can't afford that with Aiyuk this year. And Bosa had a down year last year. It's not a good approach.

@MaioccoNBCS

The #49ers placed WR Ricky Pearsall on the active/non-football injury list as rookies reported to training camp. The rookies are doing conditioning for a week before the vets arrive. The details of Pearsall’s condition were not immediately known, but it doesn’t sound like much.

Pearsall probably came into camp with a cold, that's all.

Minor. Nothing to see here.

Just like the Aiyuk trade request.

Posturing. No more, no less.

I meant it worked out that they retained him.

It would certainly be nice if an extension could happen prior to disrupting training, I do agree.

Happy Tuesday! Brandon Aiyuk will report to camp today. The $40k fine per day for not reporting is steep!

When he shows up, I wonder if he says "I'm just here so I won't get fined"

My guess is he is holding in and won't see the practice field. We'll see.

Greenlaw, Hufanga and Drake Jackson (huh?) start camp on PUP list.

Jackson has a knee injury of some sort.

Ricky Pearsall is on the non football injury list with a hamstring injury he got while away from the team.

John Lynch said Pearsall will miss the first block of training camp, which is the first four days of practice.

49ers TE George Kittle dropped to 214 pounds — a 30-pound loss — after he had offseason core muscle surgery. Kittle is now fully healthy and back to his playing weight of around 243 pounds.

One of my favorite players in the entire league. Not a lot of "throwbacks" these days but I feel he is definitely in that category. Just he produces as a receiver better than 99% of all true throwback tight ends.

Losing and then gaining 30 lbs in a 5 month stretch is almost implausibly wild.

Larry Krueger:

Recap of day #1 at 49ers camp:

-Brandon Aiyuk reported, but it’s unknown whether he will practice tomorrow w/the rest of his teammates or “hold-in” and refuse to practice until he gets a long term extension.

-Lynch/Shanahan said they expect Brandon to practice Wednesday

-Lynch said that the 49ers have tried diligently to get the Aiyuk deal done

-Lynch last year guaranteed that holdout Nick Bosa would not be traded under any circumstances but Lynch wouldn’t make that same promise w/Aiyuk, saying “there are no absolutes” about the possibility of a trade.

-Drake Jackson(knee), Talanoa Hufanga(knee), Dre Greenlaw(Achilles) will start the year on the PUP List

-Ricky Pearsall(hamstring) will start on the NFI List and will likely miss the first four practices.

-George Kittle, Mooney Ward and Jake Brendel all are coming off of offseason surgeries and yet all three will practice on Wednesday.

-Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen will split 2nd team QB reps.

-George Kittle was in good spirits and said he’s determined to get back to, and win, a Super Bowl. Kittle said he’s excited that the entire offense is likely to return.

-Kittle expressed his love for Nick Sorensen as the DC

-Nick Bosa says the young edge rushers (Jackson, Beal, Gross Matos) are developing well in the offseason and added that Leonard Floyd looks great.

-Bosa admitted that he spent part Of his offseason hoping that he could play in SF with his brother Joey, but indicated that Joey is loyal to the Chargers.

WR Brandon Aiyuk, in shorts and a t-shirt and NOT practicing with the team, just walked off the field and into the 49ers main building with John Lynch.

All-Pro LT Trent Williams is not on the field at the beginning of the 49ers first practice of camp. No explanation as of yet for his absence. Kyle Shanahan will address the matter with the media after practice.

Lombardi:

Williams has no guaranteed money left on his contract, similar to the CMC situation before that restructure. If Williams’ absence today is contract related, the 49ers can execute a similar win-win with Williams that improves their salary-cap flexibility.

Two injuries at practice today: LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles limped off the field early on; rookie LB Isaac Guerendo appeared to suffer a right hamstring strain midway through practice. Guerendo has a long history of hammy issues at #Wisconsin

Nick Wagoner:

#49ers training camp Day 1 notes and observations:

- As already noted, the only healthy Niners not participated were WR Brandon Aiyuk and LT Trent Williams, both of whom are seeking new and/or re-worked contracts. Everyone else accounted for.

- Rookie RB Isaac Guerendo departed during the session with a right hamstring injury, according to Kyle Shanahan. LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles also limped off during the session. DE Leonard Floyd appeared to tweak something early in team drills but he returned.

- As you might suspect on the first day and without pads, there was some sloppiness all around. Multiple flags for pre-snap infractions, including on the first play of team drills.

- RB Christian McCaffrey was on the field for individual work but did not take part in team drills. Shanahan said it's part of the plan to help preserve McCaffrey during this camp.

- Speaking of preserving players, TE George Kittle and CB Charvarius Ward were both in the mix for team drills on a limited basis. They'll be managed as camp goes on as they return from core muscles surgeries but both had some good moments in this practice.

- QB Brock Purdy and TE Eric Saubert had a nice connection on the first pass of the practice as Purdy lofted one just over the outstretched hand of LB De'Vondre Campbell and Saubert hauled it in for a nice gain. Purdy also missed on a couple of deep shots but both came with flags for offsides on the ground, so if nothing else, worthwhile shots for Purdy to take in that situation.

- Brandon Allen got the work with the No. 2 offense while Josh Dobbs worked with the third team. Allen hit a couple of nice throws to WR Jauan Jennings but also was nearly intercepted on a check down to RB Jordan Mason late in practice. Dobbs had less success, including an interception on an under thrown deep ball intended for open WR Danny Gray.

- S Malik Mustapha made the interception, racing from the hash to the sideline to snare it away from Gray. Mustapha also was in on a forced fumble and recovery from Jennings. Early signs that Mustapha is going to be around the ball a lot are a good thing for a safety position with some question marks right now.

- Despite the fumble, it was a strong day for Jennings, who has a chance to claim a bigger role with Aiyuk holding in and Ricky Pearsall recovering from injury.

- Jaylon Moore filled in for Williams at LT with the starting offense. It was all Spencer Burford at right guard, though it remains to be seen if he and Jon Feliciano will alternate there or if Burford will get the chance to claim the job.

- CB Isaac Yiadom carried over his success from the offseason program, coming up with a nice pass breakup on a pass to Deebo Samuel.

- Saw K Jake Moody attempt four field goals, all of which he made during team drills. His last and longest make was from 51 yards.

- LB Dre Greenlaw is on PUP as he recovers from his Achilles injury but he was on the field helping the linebackers through some drills and clearly itching to return sooner than later. The expectation remains that he still has some time to go before he can get back, however.

- Obviously, these reports will gain more detail and steam when the pads come on.

Day 2 notes from Twitter (several sources):

Ricky Pearsall was running at about 70-80% on the sideline during warmups at 49ers practice. Looks like he's still on track to return at some point next week from his hamstring injury.

Very clean day from Brock Purdy. Just sharp throughout the first two team sessions and is throwing some crisp ropes today. Back-to-back plays: Post to Brayden Willis, deep out to Deebo Samuel. Both on the money, the second one had considerable velocity

Practice 2 was good for a number of targets who weren't involved in the 49ers' pass game last season...

-Rookie Jacob Cowing, who has elite burst, took a short drag and turned on the jets

-RB Jordan Mason caught a few passes out of the backfield, looks smoother with his hands this year

-Danny Gray has been more featured than before — Aiyuk and Pearsall absences opening a door for him.

Rookie S Malik Mustapha nearly had his second INT in as many days on a broken-play heave by Brandon Allen. Mustapha has been working with the second-team defense.

Best catch of the day: Trent Taylor’s diving snag across the middle in traffic on a throw from Allen. Also, Taylor, Jacob Cowing and Ronnie Bell all working on punt returns today. Taylor is the high-floor option there. The 49ers value that. He didn't muff a single punt in his first SF stint

You’d expect Nick Bosa to beat up on OTs not named Trent Williams. But Yetur Gross-Matos has been prominent as well during Williams’ absence. Gross-Matos has had at least one would-be sack in the two practices so far.

Mild surprise: Spencer Burford has taken all the first-team RG snaps so far. It might be that SF knows what it has in Jon Feliciano, who replaced Burford late last year, and wants to give Burford all the reps he can handle.

John Lynch typically watches the 49ers practice from the centerfield vantage point — so he can watch the game from the safety’s angle. Joining Lynch there today: Brandon Aiyuk

A lot of noise this off-season for this team. Now with Trent wanting cash I do not see how they can keep both Aiyuk and him happy.
They can and will.

David Lombardi: How will SF be able to afford both Aiyuk and Williams?

Williams has no guaranteed money left on the six-year deal he signed with the 49ers in 2021. In that way, his contractual situation is similar to Christian McCaffrey’s before the running back restructured his deal with an extension this offseason. The 49ers managed to execute a win-win deal with McCaffrey, since they were able to reduce his 2024 cap hit thanks to the fact that guaranteed bonus money is prorated into the future against the cap.
Perhaps they can do the same with the 36-year-old Williams, but this is undoubtedly a delicate situation given the star tackle’s age. Williams is still playing top-level football — posting his third first-team All-Pro season — and he’s an indispensable piece of the offense, so the 49ers want to reward him accordingly. But they must also be prudent with their allocation of guaranteed money.

The team will continue to surf the wave of the NFL’s salary cap, which is rising in accordance with league revenues. The 49ers are therefore willing to push cap hits into the future through the proration of guaranteed bonus money. As long as owner Jed York is willing to pay the bonuses — and as long as the cap continues rising — such maneuvering is the same as taking out a zero-interest loan.

The 49ers actually saved $7.4 million of 2024 salary-cap space with the McCaffrey maneuver and they stand to save even more short-term room by renegotiating Williams’ contract since top tackles are paid more than top running backs. Williams’ cap hit is currently $31.6 million for the season, but the 49ers can theoretically slash that number by over $10 million if they’re willing to risk pushing hits into the future. So far, similar bets have paid off.

The mechanism of a potential Aiyuk extension is similar, as the 49ers can theoretically reduce his 2024 cap hit by around $6 million with a new deal. All unused 2024 salary-cap room would then carry over to 2025.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner on Brock Purdy:

“Perhaps it's because he had the full offseason healthy, maybe it's just his experience or both but Purdy just seems to be in total command now. Even with Bosa in his face repeatedly, Purdy is making quick decisions that he believes in and getting the ball where it needs to go. A couple of really nice throws today: one to TE Brayden Willis up the seam and another on a deep crosser to Danny Gray where Purdy fired with anticipation and was on the money for big gains.”

Bill Barnwell of ESPN reported that he believes Purdy will eventually get a 5-year/$325M deal/$65M per year!
