Nick Wagoner:
#49ers training camp Day 1 notes and observations:
- As already noted, the only healthy Niners not participated were WR Brandon Aiyuk and LT Trent Williams, both of whom are seeking new and/or re-worked contracts. Everyone else accounted for.
- Rookie RB Isaac Guerendo departed during the session with a right hamstring injury, according to Kyle Shanahan. LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles also limped off during the session. DE Leonard Floyd appeared to tweak something early in team drills but he returned.
- As you might suspect on the first day and without pads, there was some sloppiness all around. Multiple flags for pre-snap infractions, including on the first play of team drills.
- RB Christian McCaffrey was on the field for individual work but did not take part in team drills. Shanahan said it's part of the plan to help preserve McCaffrey during this camp.
- Speaking of preserving players, TE George Kittle and CB Charvarius Ward were both in the mix for team drills on a limited basis. They'll be managed as camp goes on as they return from core muscles surgeries but both had some good moments in this practice.
- QB Brock Purdy and TE Eric Saubert had a nice connection on the first pass of the practice as Purdy lofted one just over the outstretched hand of LB De'Vondre Campbell and Saubert hauled it in for a nice gain. Purdy also missed on a couple of deep shots but both came with flags for offsides on the ground, so if nothing else, worthwhile shots for Purdy to take in that situation.
- Brandon Allen got the work with the No. 2 offense while Josh Dobbs worked with the third team. Allen hit a couple of nice throws to WR Jauan Jennings but also was nearly intercepted on a check down to RB Jordan Mason late in practice. Dobbs had less success, including an interception on an under thrown deep ball intended for open WR Danny Gray.
- S Malik Mustapha made the interception, racing from the hash to the sideline to snare it away from Gray. Mustapha also was in on a forced fumble and recovery from Jennings. Early signs that Mustapha is going to be around the ball a lot are a good thing for a safety position with some question marks right now.
- Despite the fumble, it was a strong day for Jennings, who has a chance to claim a bigger role with Aiyuk holding in and Ricky Pearsall recovering from injury.
- Jaylon Moore filled in for Williams at LT with the starting offense. It was all Spencer Burford at right guard, though it remains to be seen if he and Jon Feliciano will alternate there or if Burford will get the chance to claim the job.
- CB Isaac Yiadom carried over his success from the offseason program, coming up with a nice pass breakup on a pass to Deebo Samuel.
- Saw K Jake Moody attempt four field goals, all of which he made during team drills. His last and longest make was from 51 yards.
- LB Dre Greenlaw is on PUP as he recovers from his Achilles injury but he was on the field helping the linebackers through some drills and clearly itching to return sooner than later. The expectation remains that he still has some time to go before he can get back, however.
- Obviously, these reports will gain more detail and steam when the pads come on.
