*** San Francisco 49ers *** Kittle locked down til 2029; Purdy contract watch underway (13 Viewers)

49ers roll over a team with a highly suspect OL and a QB coming off a very serious achilles heal tear.

49ers 23
Jets 3

Jets roll over team that can’t spell straight.

Jets something
49ers something
That went “straight” over my head

It was teeming with sarcasm, you might say. It wasn’t hostile, though.
Oh I know it was supposed to be funny……wish I got it lol.

Edit

I get it now lol.

You’re a good man, Todem. Keep fighting the good fight. I mean that.

eta* no sarcasm, that’s some FFA stuff for those confused.

Sup Niners Fam?

Really not much to complain about tonight. Aiyuk needs to earn that paycheck, really my only criticism of this evening. I’m not going to get too excited though.

With that, I absolutely love Brock. Gonna continue adding to my Brock Purdy rookie card stash.

Couldn't get wifi working on the plane so I didn't get to see any of the game, I'm gonna watch it tomorrow.

Loving what I'm hearing about Puni.

Here come the "Nick Bosa had 2,324 QB pressures and 100 PFF grade despite having no sacks" tweets. I don't care if I sound like a football neanderthal, I like my pass rushing DEs to record a sack every once in a while. I watched the Pittsburgh game this weekend, and TJ Watt is just a significantly better game wrecker than Bosa has been for the last 1.5 seasons and I'm tired of having to pretend otherwise. /rant

David Lombardi and Tim Kawakami are leaving the Athletic. Their SF/Niners coverage had remained fully staffed over the last couple of years even as they cut a lot of other local coverage. Seems like those cuts are coming to the Bay Area beat now too. To be clear, Lombardi is no loss for the Athletic's readership, and Kawakami was only useful as a news source because he is very connected to the team (as opposed to being some great analyst). Those guys will land elsewhere, not clear where yet.

Good news: Yetur Gross-Matos and Dee Winters are both back at practice today.

CMC also practicing, most likely limited

CMC out Sunday and could land on IR

Nick Wagoner:

#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says that RB Christian McCaffrey had his worst day health wise yesterday in terms of pain. IR is now under consideration, which would mean missing at least the next four games.

49ers' pecking order at tailback with CMC heading to IR:

1. Jordan Mason
2. Isaac Guerendo
3. Patrick Taylor Jr.
4. Ke'Shawn Vaughn (practice squad)

Meanwhile, team also has a fullback (Kyle Juszczyk) and a widleback (Deebo Samuel). Samuel was in the backfield 10 times on MON.

Oof. Lots of things to work on.

Not gonna win a lot of games playing like they're playing today.

For the second week in a row, the 49ers opponent has converted more than 60% of their third downs (MIN is 7 of 11 right now).

SFs offense has only converted 2 of 9 third downs.

That's gotta change

Purdy, for me, has looked like a guy that's just on the brink of being either good or bad. Right now he's tilting bad

That being said lots of wholes on the D as well

Purdy is fine. His O line did him no favors today. Neither did Kyles.play calling. Playing from behind never looks good with this team.

At some point, you have to be able to play from behind...I am hopeful he will be fine.

Does anyone think Minn is actually a high quality team? This is a pretty bad loss

We haven't shaken the funk from the offseason. Trent got beat a few times, Aiyuk isn't is game shape yet, pass blocking was atrocious...

Sorensen is gonna have growing pains as a first time DC. Hopefully him and Staley can figure things out because right now we don't look like we can stop anybody.

We've had slow starts before and been fine, this is nothing new.

Minn looked like a pretty decent team to me. That defense was pretty ferocious. JT O’Sullivan thinks Kyle kind of sneaky sucks at developing a pure passing game plan and days when they can’t run it consistently I think that shows up. Brock made some great plays today, I didn’t think he was the problem at all.

49ers are allowing a sack per drop back rate of 11.7%, worst in NFL. Conversely, QB Brock Purdy has average time to sack of 5.76 seconds which is 2nd SLOWEST in the NFL.

No threat of easy completions to CMC and defenses can take away more on the back end.

So even though we looked terrible, it was a one posession game and we had chances, we just didnt capitalize.

We had:

35 minutes Time of posession
300+ yard passer
100+ yard rusher
100+ yard receiver

When all those things happen, it should be a win. But going 2 for 10 on 3rd down on offense, and allowing 7 for 12 3rd down conversions on defense isn't gonna get it done.

I think we will round into shape in the coming weeks and get back on track. I feel like they're gonna need to claw their way to a playoff spot, but I also see them getting better as the season goes on, as opposed to peaking early last season before struggling a bit heading into the playoffs.

We have Hufanga, Pearsall, Greenlaw, and Hopefully CMC all back for the 2nd half of the season. If we can tread water til we start getting those guys back, I think we will be OK.

Some next gen stuff:

Through two weeks, Brock Purdy is the 4th-most sacked quarterback (8). Only Gardner Minshew, Caleb Williams and Deshaun Watson have been sacked more.

I know everyone’s low-hanging-fruit assumption will be that this is all O-line related but it’s not. Walk with me....

Brock Purdy’s time to throw average is currently the 9th slowest (2.90). This suggests that he is getting enough time to go through his progressions.

Furthermore, Purdy’s pressure rate is 20th overall so he’s getting sacked more on less pressures. You following?

Here’s the kicker: Through two weeks, Brock Purdy’s average separation on throws is the LOWEST in the league (2.9 yards) which is leading to more tight window throws. Purdy currently leads the league in tight window rate (24.6%).

Rushing Yardage Leaders:

1. JK Dobbins - 266
2. Jordan Mason - 247
3. Josh Jacobs - 235
4. Rhamondre Stevenson - 201
5. Alvin Kamara - 198

Top 2 QBs in completion percentage over expectation (CPOE) first 2 weeks:

1. Derek Carr: +11.7%
2. Brock Purdy: +10.5%

No one else over +10%

Interesting stuff.

This is very rare: 49ers ran play-action on only 7% of snaps against the Vikings, 2nd-lowest rate in NFL Week 2.

Shanahan had lauded Brian Flores' ability to get his defenders back in coverage even after dissuading offenses from run. That successfully discouraged play action, SF's bread and butter. Probably explains much of their struggles vs Flores' defense.

This should have been a no brainer:

Deommodore Lenoir and Charvarius Ward in coverage yesterday:

DMO:
• 32 coverage snaps
• 8 yards allowed

Ward:
• 32 coverage snaps
• 10 yards allowed

Neither allowed a catch to Justin Jefferson… It would have been a good idea to let one of these two follow Jefferson on every one of his snaps played.

Yards per route run

Aiyuk was #3 in NFL last season but ranks #100 through two games this season.

2023: 3.2
2024: 1.1

Average separation:

2023: 2.9
2024: 1.9

Aiyuk just needs to get back to form, like NOW, and reclaim his spot at the top of the pecking order.

Lucky for us, we get the Rams next week, who are depleted with injuries worse than we are.
