San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (3 Viewers)

I have no idea why he’s still with the team but unless he has incriminating stuff on KS, he will be cut shortly

We should be starting him out of the gate. He’s ready

Hopefully the rest of the half has been "vanilla", but dropping him back and letting pressure get to Trey made him look like Jimmy.

Also, by all accounts Jimmy is being a great teammate.  Probably better to let Jimmy start the first few games, win them, and bring Trey in with a bit more seasoning.  No salary cap emergency, right?

Of course if Denver or Indy gives SF an out we should take it.  Otherwise, ease Trey in.

Can't see the game and looks like his stats fell off a cliff after a hot start. Anyone get a look at what happened?

Lance is nowhere near ready yet. The only way he starts this year is if Jimmy gets hurt, period.

I dunno. Jimmy struggling could also result in that pretty quickly.

I’m making Lance a priority end of draft grab as a QB3.

I have no doubt JimmyG will open the year as the starter. I’m less convinced that he will remain so all season.

Period.

When Jimmy is healthy, he wins. As long as he stays healthy, he's the starter, IMO...unless he stinks up the joint, which I don't see happening.

But...stranger things have happened. Having Lance as plan B is a nice luxury to have.

He looked pretty timid tonight.

You’ll not find a more staunch JimmyG supporter around here than me. I’ve often said the best result is JimmyG plays well this year so they can get value from him in trade.

But JimmyG is like mom’s station wagon & Lance is like the neighbor’s Porsche. At some point they’re gonna want to get out of 2nd gear, maybe chirp the tires.

Lance is inevitable.

Didn’t see the game. 4 sacks, they said he was under pressure all night. Surprised he didn’t have even one rush attempt, thought that was a big part of his appeal?

Gonna take him just in case he gets the job after the season starts. Would probably help his development if he didn’t play much this year bc he has very little experience (17GS in college.)

But I’ll take a late round flyer on him.

They rotated in some scrubs on the offense, so his protection was not as good. They also had Richie James out there dropping passes & running terrible routes. Better to take a sack and throw a pic, but you also have to keep in mind at the caliber of players around him decreased as the Jets pressure increased. It was a bad combination, and I was surprised the 49ers kept him in there so long.

Internet guy thinks rookie QB is better than established veteran. Go figure.

Lance has more talent all way around. But quarterbacking in the NFL concerns more than talent. There's a lot to learn. Dude played at wherever the hell state where he rushed more times than he passed and did not play last year either. There's no shame in him needing some time to learn.

I know a lot of people seem to think he's a better equipped to help SF win football games. I don't get it. But this is internet land where players are either bums or G.O.A.T.s. It wasn't long ago everybody thought Jimmy G was the next great quarterback.

This

I posted this in the Lance thread but i think that's what you are going to get out of him this year anyway.  A spectacular play here and there but a lot of awful throws and decision making.  it's hard for me to imagine jumping from a c-class program and not playing at all last year to the nfl.  He's got raw talent for sure but there are a lot of questions around him (and deservedly so).

I don't like Jimmy G personally because he seems like a dear in headlights.  Can't make the big throw when he needs too but he will put the 49ers in the best place to win this year

Spoken like someone who didn’t watch the game.

Lance didn’t make any bad decisions & he had 4 spectacular throws (2 on the run) that were darts the receivers dropped.

Really a shame when people try to evaluate player potential by starting witn a bad premise like this. Does everyone a disservice.

you said it yourself. JimmyG is deer in the headlights at times out there. He’s a game manager. I like him - he’s a good dude. He’s got some talent. He gets the ball out quickly. But he doesn’t make quality reads, he lacks some touch on his passes and he doesn’t throw a great deep ball. We know exactly what JimmyG is. And if the Niners want to win more games they need a QB with more talent.

Lance has more talent. And while he isn’t quite there yet, it’s a month until the regular season.  I wouldn’t be at all shocked if he took the job in camp, but if not, he should be starting by week 4.

as though the person criticizing someone as “Internet guy” isn’t *also* “internet guy”.

I stopped reading after this. That’s all that needed to be said.

I wasn't busting you for being an internet guy, only having typical internet guy opinions. And now also for having typical internet guy lack of willingness to read another point of view.

Nbd I'm over it.

No Trent Williams or Alex Mack, and aside from Aiyuk, no dependable pass catchers.

I'm betting Kyle didn't want him to run in his first game...to be honest, I was surprised he called a pass play on his first snap, I thought for sure we'd see 3 straight handoffs in his first series to calm his nerves and let him settle in.

But yeah, pass blocking was pretty much nonexistant all night.

I'm sure we will see him run some in the next 2 games, but Kyle is gonna keep it vanilla until the reg season.

There's no doubt he has a bright future, but he just turned 21 a few months ago, I think the plan all along has been to have him sit this year ala Mahomes behind Alex in KC for his first year (aside from getting him a few snaps per game in special packages).

Its gonna be fun watching him develop, and I won't be surprised if he does take the starting job at some point this season, but for now Jimmy is still the guy.

I strongly suspect that Lance is going to force Shanny to reconsider that plan.

Watching This clip of all of Lance's throws, both the 49ers and Chiefs had trouble hauling in his throws...there looked to be some serious velocity on most of the drops. What an arm this kid has. I mean...wow.

On a side note...anyone notice Jerick McKinnon had 3 carries for 19 yards and 2 catches for 21 yards for KC? What a punk. Lol

If that happens, that would mean Trey is progressing faster than anticipated, so I'd be fine with it.

Let's gooooooo!!!
Based on what I saw last night I wouldn’t be at all shocked. Lots of comments from coaches about what a quick study he is.

I want to see him with the starters behind a full OL & with a full array of weapons to see what he’s really capable of.

He’s very comfortable, has good touch & has a cannon for sure.

Lance has a ways to go. He knows it, Shanahan knows it - their post-game quotes reflect that. There is no benefit to rush him and that is the organizational plan. Once Shanahan determines Lance gives the 49ers an equally good of a chance to win as Garoppolo, I believe he'll make the switch.

The throws that were almost intercepted were not bad decisions but more likely not recognizing coverages as both, to my eye, were zone. The first one had the corner dropping out of the flat, the second had an inside robber. Defenders on both probably read Lance's eyes - defense is allowed to make plays too.

Reading defenses can be learned & improved and everything I've read and heard about Lance is that he has the work ethic to do that - 49ers track how long players are logged in to their iPad playbooks and Lance has been on the most.

Encouraging first pre-season game but anyone anointing Lance as the week 1 starter is basing that more on optimism than reality, imo.

Kyle never shows anything in preseason.

that looked like a play that Lance bought time with his legs & made a great pass.

I didn’t think that was the initial design of that play but I could be wrong. Hell of a pass tho. Just watched it again. Looked like it was supposed to go to Aiyuk.

Not worth arguing over, but wasn't that the same play (or at least type of play) we saw highlighted in practice video recently where he threw against the grain for a bomb td?

Hope you're right.  I do agree, based on 30 minutes of football, Trey's already better than Jimmy G.

I was reminded this morning that in 2012 preseason, Shanny showed not a hint of the RPO/read-option stuff that was coming with Robert Griffin in the regular season.  Thinking HSG is probably right that the "special stuff" won't be shown till Trey is ready and playing in games that matter.

I’m not anointing him as the week 1 starter.

But he’s better than JimmyG.

Gonna start calling Lance Thanos. He’s inevitable.

How much do you see Shanahan using the QB substitution strategy we saw against the Raiders? Do you think it may continue even when Lance takes over as the starter?

I think there's a good chance that he uses it at least one series per game, especially if they're ahead. It's going to be interesting to see if it is used or was just showcased to make other teams have to gameplan for the possibility.

No clue. Could be a thing, or could be that Shanahan is making us think it's a thing.

Either way, this is gonna be a fun season to watch!

But JimmyG.....is Ironman.

sorry; couldn't resist.
Hahaha

And irony of ironies - Lance hurt his hand.

hey, I’m hoping JimmyG plays well. At the end of the day it’s “go Niners!”.

Ps - I admit the whole idea of QBBC concerns me. A lot. I didn’t like it in NOS & I don’t like it in SF. But not like they’re replacing Brees when Lance comes in.

I'm surprised they cut Clinton Dix and kept Tavon Wilson. Also thought WR Benjamin and RB Gallman would make the roster.

I get a lot of Kapernick vibes from him. Which isn’t a bad thing, especially in today’s league and with someone as good as Shanahan calling plays.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this team at least being in the playoffs. My biggest worry is that despite throwing significant draft capital at the problem, they apparently still have turnstiles at RG and will be allowing interior pressure all year long. And the defense being really good still depends on Bosa’s health, which given his history is concerning. But better depth and/or health at QB, TE (Kittle) and WR will go a long way.

I was about to post just how crappy the Lynch/Shanny regime has been at drafting oline, but then realized they haven't really drafted that many at all. I think like maybe 3 total prior to this year? I think Banks is actually the first guard this regime has drafted. Hoping the kid turns it around... he's looking like a bust.

They took McKivitz last year in the 5th with the intent to convert him to guard, but apparently that experiment has been unsuccessful so far.

F'n Kinlaw. Good thing we're deep at D line. DJ Jones time.

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/149968-injured-reserve-being-considered-49ers-javon-kinlaw-shanahan/

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after today's practice and provided an update on Javon Kinlaw. The second-year defensive tackle has been dealing with a setback in his knee, an injury that occurred on December 20, 2020, against the Dallas Cowboys and forced him to miss the last two games of the season.

Kinlaw was officially listed as "doubtful" for Sunday on the team's injury report. With the knee issues continuing to resurface, Shanahan was asked if injured reserve is a possibility for the defensive tackle.

"Not yet," the coach responded. "I mean, he's still got a chance to play this week, so we're still trying to decide that. So, not yet."

General manager John Lynch didn't sound too optimistic about Kinlaw's potential availability for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

"You know, it's kind of a deal where we've been able to quiet it down at times," Lynch said on KNBR this morning. "And other times, it gets flared up. He was doing really well throughout the offseason, and it kind of flared up on him again at some point a couple of weeks ago. We tried to quiet it down, but it's not working real well right now."

Mostert.  SMH. 2 carries and he's hurt.

I feel so bad for Verrett, just one of those freak, non contact injuries.

Jimmy actually played a great game, but it WAS the Lions, so Im taking it with a grain of salt.

Really hoping Kinlaw can go next week, if not I'm gonna start getting worried that he was a bad pick (I'm not in that train...yet).

Kind of shocked on what I've been reading about Aiyuk today. Seems like he might be in Shannys doghouse for some reason, and that Sherfield might actually pass him on the depth chart...WTF?! I know he ls been dealing with a hamstring issue, but it seems there's more to it than that.

If Mostert is out next week, Im excited to see what Sermon can bring...our other young RBs looked good.

Our defense looked out of sync most of the day...I'm hoping it's just part of the adjustment of having a new defensive coordinator and that they will get better as the season progresses. I hope.

That's all Ive got for now.

Mostert out 8 weeks with chipped knee cartilage.

I'm over this guy, I've never seen a player so fragile.

Mitchell, Hasty, Sermon, with Jeff Wilson coming back at some point is what we're gonna have to roll with. Even when Mostert  comes back, I don't see him making through a whole game. He's about useless.

So frustrating.

I hope they give sermon a chance to carry the rock as well.  Again he appears to be in the doghouse so who knows

The D really looked worrisome to me.  I mean, they may have just been flat because it was the lions, but they got no pressure and there were lots of holes

New defensive coordinator, no Javon Kinlaw, no Mosley to start, then Greenlaw and Verrett got hurt before the Lions' late surge.

I'm not too worried, at least not yet.

I get there were excuses but again....the lions

I'm not worried yet either, it's week 1

Sermon did a lot of dancing behind the LOS in preseason but I didn't know it was this bad... hopefully this is a wakeup call for him. But I'm not worried about the RBs, that's one of their deepest positions. But Aiyuk needs to be a playmaker on Sundays for this offense to ascend to the next level. This is a YAC offense and Aiyuk looks to be one of the best at it.

Sherman probably doesn't have it anymore, given the lack of interest from any teams. His recent episode is probably him coming to that realization as well.

Aaaaand Mostert done for the year.

Get Frank Gore on the phone,  we need some veteran leadership in the RB room.
