Santonio Holmes "doubtful at best" this Monday (1 Viewer)

Just heard on Mike Tomlin's press conference that WR Santonio Holmes suffered a high ankle sprain last week and will be "doubtful at best" for Monday Night's game against the Dolphins. Safety Troy Polamalu is also listed as doubtful with a knee injury.

CB Deshea Townsend has "a little swelling" in his ankle but is expected to practice later this week. LB Lamarr Woodley is expected back in practice this week as well and should play.

Everyone else is relatively healthy.

great .. now I have an excuse to keep him on the bench.

Whenever I have him in my lineup he does nothing... whenever I sit him he goes off... go figure.

It doesn\'t help things that they\'re playing the winless Dolphins and have to like their chances to beat them without Holmes in there.

who's the better p/u? wilson or washington? i'm guessing washington.

Ugh. Roethlisberger owner in multiple leagues and Holmes as well in a couple. Just moved Jennings for him in my big money league.

You never like to hear high ankle sprain, but here's to hoping it's only this week.

As a: Big Ben owner - :IBTL: FWP owner - :lmao: Miller owner - :lmao:
Maybe Miller bumps up but I don't see how this positively affects Parker... They'll have a little more trouble moving the ball without Holmes which means fewer red zone opportunities...

I would guess Washington too although Ben likes to spread it around. Wilson has not been on the field much but he will this week. I think Heath Miller is definitely going to get more looks.

 hes been my most consistent WR this year.
In non-ppr he has not been consistent (at least by my scoring system). He has had 4 weeks under 10 points, 3 weeks in the 10-15 range and 2 weeks over 20. That is not a spread that I would call consistent. Typical for a WR, but not consistent.

the other thread yesterday on this was much more optimistic. I might go back to that one to make me feel better

There are no consistent WR's in FF. Seriously everybody has good and bad games. TO, Moss, Edwards: all have had their bad games. I think the most consistent player has been Housh? So you're saying you'd rather have Housh than Moss or TO since he's more consistent?

Nate Washington gets the starting nod in Holmes place

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07327/836099-66.stm

Cornerback Ike Taylor said it's not even close who is the fastest Steelers receiver, the player who accelerates like a Maserati and gets to full speed quicker than the others.

Nate Washington.

"He gets to top speed right away, hands down," Taylor said. "You can ask Deshea [Townsend], you can ask any defensive back. It's Nate, hands down."

That is a surprising declaration from Taylor, who gets to cover all the receivers in practice, especially considering the presence of Santonio Holmes, Cedrick Wilson and even Willie Reid on the roster.

But Washington's speed is among the reasons the Steelers will make something of a drastic switch at the receiver position when they play the winless Miami Dolphins (0-10) Monday night at Heinz Field. It is Washington, not Wilson, who will replace the injured Holmes at split end, even though Washington is primarily a flanker and Wilson was the starting split end for most of last season.

The change may not seem like much on paper, but, because of the difference in route assignments and blocking responsibilities, the position switch is akin to moving Dan Kreider from fullback to tailback.

"It's totally different from the Z," Washington said, referring to flanker, the only position Washington has played since joining the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2005. "It's totally different blocking schemes and the sights [adjustments] are different. I'll be in my book a lot more and studying film a lot more this week to prepare myself to play the X."

The "X" is the name for the split end, and the position is designed for more deep routes and big plays. For that reason, it requires a player with speed.

The flanker position requires more blocking and features crossing and underneath routes. Hines Ward, a four-time Pro Bowler, has manned the position since 1999 and developed into the team's all-time receptions leader.

With the exception of a few plays, Washington said, he has never played the split-end position. But he is not asking why he, not Wilson, will get the opportunity to replace Holmes, who has a mild high-ankle sprain and is not expected to play against the Dolphins.

"I don't know the situation," said Washington, who has 16 catches for 251 yards and two touchdowns. "All I'm looking at is the opportunity to make plays and help this team win. Hey, I'm there. I'm not going to ask any questions."

Wilson, who started 12 games at split end in 2006, has just one catch in the past four games and only eight all season -- five coming against the Seattle Seahawks when he and Washington started because of injuries to Holmes and Ward. There have been six games in which Wilson has not had a catch. And he does not have a touchdown.

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said he is making the switch because Washington is a better fit for some of the packages he has installed for the Dolphins.

Wilson, though, will be the No. 3 receiver. When the Steelers use a three-wide receiver formation, he will be the split end and Washington will move into the slot.

"Everyone wants more opportunities," Wilson said. "But I think I made the best of my opportunities, catching the ball well. That's all you can really do."

That's one of the areas in which Washington has struggled -- catching the ball. He dropped another pass in Sunday's 19-16 overtime loss to the New York Jets, but he said the ball sailed off his hands because of a wind gust.

"It looked like it was coming right at my chest and, at the last second, it kept sailing on me," Washington said. "I got a late jump on the play and I could have made [the catch], but it surprised me so much I tried to catch the back end of ball. No excuse. It's just where we have to make a play for Ben."

Washington might get more of a chance against the Dolphins. He will have to worry less about blocking and more about getting downfield.

"The Z has a lot more blocking schemes. That's the biggest difference," Washington said. "There is a lot more shifting and motioning. But, as far as big plays, anyone out there can make a big play."

Grab Nate Washington right now, was listening the NFL radio and holmes is out this week and could be out several weeks due to a high ankle sprain.

Anything new to report on this? I'm assuming Holmes remains out tonight, but what's the deal long term?

I haven't heard anything but I don't expect him to play soon. It's a tough injury and it usually keeps players out at least a couple weeks.

(Rotoworld) Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he is "cautiously optimistic" that Santonio Holmes (high ankle sprain) and Troy Polamalu (knee) will play in Week 13.Impact: "Santonio and Troy are both going to run tomorrow. They are progressing well," said Tomlin at his weekly press conference. Holmes has a great matchup against the Bengals and would be a solid start if active, while Polamalu faces a suddenly resurgent Bengals running game.

I didn't want to create a new thread on Holmes... I hope someone sees this one.

Looking to bump this back up the page in order to get updates on his practice and running he was supposed to do today.

I'm praying he practices without limitation. Cincy could be a slugfest, depending on weather.

Nervous that all signs point to go, and he pulls up lame pregame again or as soon as it starts. I have to think long and hard before starting him.

But it's Cinci, so it's awfully tempting.

practice should be over soon right? Steelers homers?
Just heard 2 minutes ago that Marvel Smith, Troy Polamalu, Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, Bryant Mcfadden and Dan Kreider did not practice today.
Ward, too?! :goodposting:
I wouldn't lose any sleep about Ward. He typically is held out on Wednesdays. I was just reporting for completeless' sakes. If he misses practice tomorrow you might have something to worry about.

Any advice on whether Wilson or Washington is the play if Holmes is out? Deep league, need a hail mary.

J. Jones is my other option to start at WR this week and he plays on Thurs. Do I gamble on Holmes playing on Sun or go with J. Jones on Thurs? If I gamble and lose I'd have to start Randel El. Tough choice. :goodposting:

Holmes has a high ankle sprain which normally takes a couple of weeks to heal. I think Holmes is a risky play this week.I would assume Washington will start again at split-end but that doesn't mean he'll get more targets than Wilson. Trying to predict where Ben is going to throw (other than to Ward) is tough...
