Scrapping a car with no title? (1 Viewer)

I bought a clunker 4 months ago that finally crapped out on me. Engine totally shot

Just bought another car tonight and the junker is at the mechanics shop. His scrap guy is supposed to get it from me but I can't find the title.

i don't think I ever had the title. A friend told me he thinks I was supposed to go to the DMV and register it to also get the title which I never did. I didn't know because it's my first time owning a car.

is there any way I can scrap it without the title?

all I have to show I own the car is the bill of sale from the dealership

In VA, if you bought it from a dealership the dealership would usually handle titling & registration of the car. Did you drive it without license plates or insurance?

If you  never titled it, just push it out into the street & walk away :D

The dealer provided plates.

Im not sure if they gave me the title or not but I couldn't have lost it since all my paperwork was in place.

i never registered it either just have a bill of sale.

if they werent temporary tags, id say the car was titled & tagged. contact the DMV to get a duplicate title. Or just abandon it.

What state? Did you have a loan on car? Usually the dealer will apply for title for you and it will be mailed to you or the lienholder.

Do dealers ever forget this?
I wouldn't think so.  As Juxtatarot pointed out they might have done the paperwork for you and it hasn't gotten mailed to you yet, since you did say you got tags Best bet would be to give them a call and ask.

There was this place here in Lansing, mi that had the most ridiculous commercials, really obnoxious. The kind of awful local commercial that makes you change the channel. Then one day I heard they were being investigated for selling cars without titles (likely stolen). The whole lot was gone in a day and they were gone just like that. I never heard anything else about it, but it certainly made me not trust car dealers even more.

I doubt this has happened to you, but it seemed worth sharing.
