Selective draft slot (1 Viewer)

This is new to me.

I'm in a league where I have the ability to select my draft position.

12 team ppr

By the time I have the opportunity to pick, pretty sure the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th slots will be gone.

Would you:

A.  Draft 1st overall... knowing you'll get a stud rb and 2 other top 25 players.

B.  Draft 5th overall.  Probably get Brown... a 2nd tier rb like Freeman... and best available in 3rd.

C.  Draft 8th.  Take Fournette... get a wr like Allen/Thomas or possibly even a 2nd rb like Hunt/McCaffery in the 2nd

I’ve commissioned a “kentucky Derby style” league for 12 years.

Its the best for a snake format, IMO, as the middle (6-7-8) is generally considered the least desirable.

Every year it goes (roughly) like this:

picks 1-5 generally take their original slot.

pick 6 takes 12

pick 7 takes 11

pick 8 takes 10

pick 9 takes 8

picks 10-11-12 get stuck with the rest.

Id rather draft closer to the end - at pick 6 I took 11.

But this year pick 4 shocked us by taking 5. His rationale was he’d still get either a premier RB or WR, and this way he didn’t have to make that choice, plus he had 2 fewer picks between his picks in the long turn.

sound logic actually.

If you have a chance for a top 4 pick you gotta go there.  Gurley/Bell are foundational players.  After that 5 & 8 are toss ups, both spots have good arguments, I lean 5 only because of AB.  He offers such a positional advantage.

I didn't have this option and I think it is actually pretty cool. I had the first pick and I can tell you I did not like it. Sure I got Todd Gurley and lucked out getting Michael Thomas with my 2nd Pick and my 3rd pick right after was McCaffrey which was also very lucky.

I honestly would rather go with option C and take Fournette and then K.Allen/M. Thomas or Hunt/CMC

Having played in this format for years, I can say this: your philosophy is spot on, but you just cant get that specific.

Mocks & ADP prepare you for what should be there, but in real drafts several things happen that throw that out the window. Players slide, dumb picks get made.

I was stoked at 11 that Gordon made it, after Fournette (1.10) then Beckham (1.11) as I had Gordon ranked higher than both.

then the turn went WR/WR (Julio/Thomas)  and I got Keenan Allen.

I never would have planned to take RB/WR from the same team, but I had Allen ahead of both in my format.

Point is, at the end of the draft you’ve gotta be loose -  but it is good to know who might be there, so you can formulate a strategy.

I totally agree with this. It was my first draft ever and I saw all you were talking about. I saw E. Sanders picked way too early. I saw an owner draft Josh Allen just because he was a Buffalo Bills fan. Josh Allen in my opinion was not even on my radar. Then came in the late rounds and there sat Andrew Luck and even though I was going to pick a Defense I had to pick him. So you are correct and you have to be loose.

Very true. In my main league, I had an opportunity to pick 8th but opted for 12 knowing full well that none of the big 4 would be there at 8 in this long time 14 team league of experienced players. Well, Kamara goes 4th, Brown 5th, someone reaches for Fournette at 6 and then Hopkins at 7. Zeke falls to the lucky ******* at 8 and I want to punch myself in the nuts.

Barkley fell to me at 12 so hopefully it works out, but you can do all the prep work and still end up being thrown for a loop.

We do KDS and I got first choice this year.  Without doing any research, I chose the one slot.  After that I would take 2 or 5.  I think Bell > Gurley and would be happy with both over any of the others being considered.  I am a little wary of Bells situation though and actually took Gurley at 1.01.  As far as the 5 pick, for me I have AB slotted at 1.03 but he routinely drops to 1.05 or lower.  I also have a pretty steep drop off at 2.09 (from pick 20 to 21).  That being said, something unexpected always happens dropping that a pick or two.
